- The story begins with a man stumbling uneasily through a castle, his memory is fading and all he reminds himself of are his name, Daniel, and his address in Mayfair, London. He awakens in a corridor on a rainy night and searches the castle for clues, he finds a note addressed to himself dated, 19th of August, 1839, the note explains he intentionally wiped his memory and he must kill someone, an Alexander of Brennenburg. Throughout the castle Daniel encounters horrifying monsters hunting him and some cosmic force is chasing him, taking the form of organic matter smearing the walls.
The backstory is revealed through Daniel's journal entries and flashbacks, in May of that year he traveled to Algeria with a friend called Professor Herbert, they were searching for the tomb of Tin Hinan, an underground chamber was discovered and Daniel was trapped inside by accident, he nearly suffocated until he saw a glowing object, he approached it and found an orb on a pedestal, once out Daniel was sent back to London while Herbert remained to search the chamber. Daniel studied the orb and found it had supernatural qualities, he consulted a geologist for advice and several books, along with names in Herbert's address book. Over time Daniel started having nightmares which he believed the orb was causing, he receives news of Herbert, he has vanished without a trace, worse yet, the men Daniel made contact with since his return have died violently.
Daniel received letters regarding the orb, one of which from a Prussian baron named Alexander offering protection. Daniel traveled to the location, castle Brennenburg in the Prussian woods, Daniel is taken in with the knowledgeable baron, he knows what the orb is, those who disturb it are followed by some powerful shadow which kills all in its path, Alexander describes ways to combat the shadow, a banishment ritual, specifically, human sacrifice.
Daniel is taught torture methods on supposed criminals to ward off the shadow, the methods are made more effective with application of an amnesia mixture made with Damascus Rose, Alexander takes Daniel to capture the last victims needed to eliminate the shadow forever, they abduct the family of a dairy farmer who are kept in the castle dungeon, one of the daughters escapes and Daniel chases her and kills her, the realization of what he's done breaks his psyche.
Worse yet, Alexander never intended to save him, Alexander is a creature from another dimension, being stuck in the human world for centuries, he prolonged his existence with a potion made from "Vitae", a substance that organics produce when scared, hence the lengthy torture methods, and posed as a Prussian baron, Alexander possess another orb that had shattered, once it's repaired he can return to his homeworld, leaving Daniel to be consumed by the shadow.
Horrified by his own actions and furious at Alexander's deception, Daniel wipes his memory of his crimes so he can track and kill Alexander with a focused mind, Daniel makes it to the lowest levels of Brennenburg and meets the husk of Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, the 16th century scholar, he studied orbs with his student, Johann Weyer, pieces of another orb are scattered among the torture rooms which Daniel finds, Agrippa asks Daniel an odd request, Weyer left behind a recipe for a tonic that Daniel can find the ingredients for, feed it to Agrippa and remove his head without killing him.
Daniel infiltrates Alexander's inner sanctum with the shadow dangerously close, Alexander is preparing the portal for his return.
Three endings can happen here.
Revenge: Daniel knocks over three pylons powering the portal, Alexander is consumed by the shadow, the game ends with Daniel walking through the empty corridors of castle Brennenburg back to the surface having redeemed himself.
Sacrifice: Daniel can do nothing and let Alexander escape, the shadow consumes Daniel and Alexander calls him from beyond the void to tell him his sacrifice will be celebrated.
Benefactor: Assuming Daniel removed Agrippa's head and took it with him he can wait until the portal is ready for use and throw the head in, the shadow consumed both Alexander and Daniel, Daniel can hear Agrippa's voice in a distant light talking to Weyer promising Daniel they'll save him.
