Good dog
kosmasp18 February 2024
That sometimes has to be a bad dog - well no pun intended. Aaron really is the ... (Eck)hart of the movie (I probably should have used that as summary headline). That said, he has quite the supporting cast - you can look up the names yourself. If you have a heart (not gonna use his name again ... for this review at least) for pets/animals, you will find a lot to like here. Unless you are a cat person I reckon, but that is a different topic to discuss.

The story is good and the suspense is high - I would say that the story is predictable overall, but you will still find yourself on the edge of your seat ... waiting for what happens next ... knowing or not knowing almost does not matter. I assume most will invest themselves in this - especially if they know what the movie is about and what they are about to get ... can justice be served? Being right morally and in the eyes of the justice system may be two pair of shoes ... if that does not give you paws to think about ... (I had to, sorry not sorry)

Solid, slowburning character portrait of a man's love for his dog
imseeg7 October 2023
This movie only starts to become really suspenseful, gripping and action packed after some 45 minutes, so beware the real rewarding suspenseful part of this movie is only firing up during the second half.

But this movie has enough to offer in the first 45 minutes as well, because everything (direction, photography, editing, soundscore, dialogues, characters) are of SOLID quality. I really appreciate it so much to see a movie like this, made with an abundance of craftmanship.

The first 45 minutes are firstmost a subtle character portrait of an introvert, aggressive cop (terrific role by Aaron Eckhart), struggling with his inner demons. When his dog gets shot he desperately wants to find the dogkiller, but while investigating he stumbles upon the most dangerous drug cartel.

Slow start, bleak and supsenseful final. Terrific acting performance by Aaron Eckart. Solid direction.

Probably best suited for an arthouse movie audience, because this is defnitely NOT a fastpaced gungho action picture, but much more a slowburning, psychological character portrait of a cop, struggling with his inner demons.

Rushed End

Warning: Spoilers
The movie is intense. Eckhart doing his thing and well. It would have been much much better if they gave little more attention to details and didn't rush the end of the movie. Everything just wrapped in 5 minutes. Opening is good. Then time line seems to scatter a bit but moreover supportive characters like Stephen Lang, Mia are not involved much in the story. Almost felt like the director wanted the finish the movie and move on the next project. Satanistas could have gotten a more insight like how they treat the dogs and what the woman is about. Superior played by Nick Searcy seeems all involved in it but northing happens. He turns out out a@@hole boss. I hate when they waste great material.

Rather generic...
paul_haakonsen3 October 2023
Had I heard about this 2023 crime thriller titled "Muzzle" from writers Carlyle Eubank and John Stalberg Jr. Prior to sitting down to watch it? No. But I figured that the movie might be worth a shot, since it had Aaron Eckhart and Stephen Lang on the cast list. Plus, the fact that it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, also helped to make me sit down to watch it.

The storyline in "Muzzle", as written by Carlyle Eubank and John Stalberg Jr., was a pretty straightforward one. Ultimately then the movie came off as being a rather generic crime thriller. So the writers didn't really manage to accomplish a whole lot with the script and storyline. A shame, because there certainly was potential for something here.

The acting performances in "Muzzle" were good, and Aaron Eckhart does carry the movie well enough in the leading role. It wasn't a movie that boasted a whole lot of familiar faces on the cast list. In fact, I was only familiar with Aaron Eckhart and Stephen Lang.

For a crime thriller, then the movie was not particularly interesting or thrilling. And that made for a somewhat bland and mediocre viewing experience. And while I did manage to finish the movie, I can honestly say that I was only mildly entertained. This is hardly a movie that warrants more than a single viewing.

My rating of director John Stalberg Jr.'s 2023 crime thriller "Muzzle" lands on a bland five out of ten stars.

A little surprised by so many bad reviews...
jennydawn-4223923 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed this movie. I did mark the spoiler and it's only a little one. Yes at times it was slow and a bit unbelievable. They connected a couple relationships and didn't give enough background or enough time to explain. They disrespected the K9 units and I have a really hard time believing any officers would show so much disrespect like that. **spoiler** especially after Ace was shot and he's running with him in his arms yelling officer down and no one is helping him. They are all just standing there rolling their eyes and making faces. I mean come on really!? But yet they all give Ace a big funeral then fail to mention he was a veteran of war as well. ** end spoiler** I would hope that if this were a real K9 officer this would be different... that's all I kept thinking at a few different places through the whole movie. The movie did hold my attention all the way to the end and that's hard to do and I even teared up at a couple points (and that's even harder to do). So overall I did enjoy it.

I really wanted to like this movie
magiucbc5 October 2023
I have never reviewed a film before, but felt compelled to do so after giving this a watch.

I saw the previews and was excited to sit down and watch...unfortunately, the best part of the movie was the trailer. Eckhart did his best with what he had to work with, but it there were so many forced scenes it was distracting. Beyond that, while the story is pretty linear, scene to scene seems to leave out a lot of information in regards to character development and development of friendships when seemingly there was none.

This is definitely a watch it once film. In the hands of a capable director and producer this could have been excellent.

Who would put their money in a movie like this?
veronikave16 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
If someone asked me to summarize what the movie was about, I'd seriously struggle.

There's no real point or storyline in this movie. The scenes are out of context and I struggled following the storyline. For example the pathetic attempt at a love relationship - what the heck was that?

1) they say hi 2) they xxx 3) she gets mad at him and leaves 4) they have a child together

What?

Some scenes are with no followup - like athe beef between Aaron's character and a colleague of his. What was the point of that one scene? Didn't add any value or point to the "story". The same goes for the meetings with a psychiatrist - no real dialogue, depth is something to dream about - or point in those scenes.

I found it overly graphic towards the end - unnecessarily so. The ambush at the end of the movie was also kind of a head scratcher - killing 3000 other dogs just to save one? Wasn't the movie called "Muzzle" suggesting it's about love for dogs and the relationship between humans and dogs? That shouldn't include killing those the main character wasn't close to.

Anyhow, I just finished watching the movie and too many thoughts are going through my head - all of them how terrible this movie was. If they had the funding and Aaron, why not make a proper movie with it?

not a must see, but glad I saw it
ptjase30 March 2024
I give any movie I can sit through at least a 6. This gets a 6.5. Acting was solid all round. It tugged at my emotions a few times, dog lovers will relate, 7/10 for that. It has some good violence but mostly that was kept on a leash and gets a 6.5/10. The story was a 6/10, kinda weak ending and it would have been a 5 but it gets a 6 for being partially original. It was fine but could have done more with the romance and even some sex/nudity would have upped my rating. Also was just unfortunate that the setting was often amongst the homeless, really not pleasant or entertaining to immerse in. So yeah, a competent 6.5/10 for me, watch it with your best friend.

Too many questions, zero answers
jess_sacul20 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Aaron Eckhart is a really good actor but he can't have read the script properly before signing up to this one.

The dogs are amazing which saves this from a one star.

Too many questions and zero answers!

Why did the paramedic not help him? He was literally putting a plaster on someone - the dog was clearly dying!

How was a traumatised dog which didn't listen to a word he said sanctioned to be an active police dog?

The sniper guy hated him and then all of a sudden showed up to help. How did he get there so fast!?

Who was the baddy person?

How did they have a baby so fast when she left him? Was she already pregnant? No chemistry whatsoever.

WHY DID THE DOG ONLY HAVE THREE LEGS!?! So unnecessary. Terrible ending.

Dog lover
chillisam-6601025 January 2024
I must say that I absolutely loved this movie.

It was very heartbreaking and as a canine lover, just shows the true love between a dog and their human.

I love the interactions between the dog and owner and how it just shows that there are no bad animals, just bad owners.

I think it sends a very good message to the public. And should be embraced and shared. My dog watched it with me and she got very sad.

Don't know why some bad reviews.

An absolute wonderful heartfelt caring movie. I cannot fault it at all.

I will encourage anyone who loves animals to take the time and watch this gem. You will never be the same.

Awful editing
Jamboree-de-Peckham11 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Cards on the table: I'm an unashamed fan of Aaron Eckhart's.

He's private with his private life, he's a good actor who's always interesting to watch and he's a handsome lad.

This film HAD potential.

The first hour or so was an interesting look at the solitary life of a cop in the canine unit and the reality of his job and the beat he's patrolling - the homeless encampments of downtown LA. Both the invisibles of society.

There was an attempt to address the scourge of Fentanyl addiction which has many states unable to cope.

So far, so interesting if a little slow.

All of a sudden, he gets a girlfriend, (why? - he would have been more believable as an older sexually ambiguous man who struggles with intimacy because of his combat history in Iraq - but I digress) his neighbour and they're shagging within 5 minutes of meeting.

Totes legit babes. And believable.

Then he gets involved with a drug gang, we're not quite sure if he's been sacked from his job because he's killed 2 people and then there's a female cartel boss stealing his dog (not sure why) then Pote from Queen Of The South turns up as a police dog dealing lumberjack and then Aaron goes all Rambo and kills everyone in 3 minutes suddenly helped by his sniper colleague who's hated him for the duration of the movie.

Cut to he now has a baby with the neighbour, still driving the drug dealers' stolen truck, and his dog loses a leg.

The End.

Que?

I mean I've seen episodes of Law & Order - Organised Crime - which made more sense.

And Chris Meloni is just as cute BTW.

Aaron, DARLING, bubbala, you've got to start getting on your knees again my love because this was easily one of the most nonsensical, rushed, poorly edited films I've seen since....... Yentl?

Who on earth did you piss off at Central Casting?

I've given this 3 stars because it's you (and I still would) even after this ridiculous storyline and atrocious studenty, we just ran out of money, ending.

But the film?

Ay dreadful.

Get a new agent my love because this one is either trying to torpedo your career or trying to make sure you only get hired by Lifetime.

No bueno.

And please don't get plastic movie star teef, I'm liking you grizzled and slightly wrecked looking.

Bark is bigger than its bite.
alibabs1234 December 2023
I do have a soft spot for these type of movies... Channing Tatum's "Dog" was surprisingly good, I thought "A Dog's Purpose" was good also. I mean, Turner and Hooch set the bar (or should I say "stick"), it's a classic. I think the less said about K-9 the better. It seems an element of comedy helps these movies build the relationship between man and his would-be best friend. Here though, it's out and out drama with not much in the way of levity to break up the doom and gloom.

I think this started out well but the point where it really needed to start drawing you in to whatever the endgame was, it didn't. Aaron Eckhart did a decent job but I think was let down by the watered-down, John Wick-esque, murky underworld that he was tasked with infiltrating and ultimately toppling. A real lack of a crescendo with the final confrontation being somewhat absent of any real, ahem, 'bite'.

What a disappointment!
rodney_h31 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
How on God's Earth can a movie with stars like Aaron Eckhart, Nick Searcy and Stephen Lang in it be so atrociously awful? I've been a huge fan of Eckhart, Searcy and Lang (Lang all the way back to the 80's and Searcy all the way back to the 90's) and I can't believe they would appear in such a dreadful film as this. The writing is all over the place and doesn't come close to achieving the impact intended (whatever that might be.... I still haven't figured it out). The evil woman controlling his dog is nonsensical and detracts horribly from the movie. It didn't make sense at all. The ending is puzzling, nonsensical and just nauseating. I'm glad he winds up with the woman AND the dog but why is the dog missing a leg? Ridiculous!

The story woulda, coulda and shoulda been a terrific one - following a human K9 Officer working the streets with a fabulous K9 partner who gets killed in the line-of-duty and struggling to overcome the loss. Then finally coming to terms with it, acquiring a new dog albeit one with as many or more physical, mental and emotional injuries as himself. In the hands of a competent, highly skilled writer, director and editor this could have been one of the finest films of the year. Instead, regretfully, it turns out to be one of the worst.

I hate scoring anything less than 5...but...Homeless actors ???
ronan7315 November 2023
I am more than happy to suspend a little disbelief in most tv and movies but sadly this is all I seemed to be doing while watching Muzzle. Feels like the team of editors had a big fall out and this was patched together by a trainee.

I dont usually give spoilers but in this case i dont think it would make any difference to the viewing of this movie.

Watch out for a work colleague who hates Aaron and try and figure that relationship out.. or the love interest storyline or who the baddy is and how high that goes....

I also think 90% of the "actors" were actual real life skid row homeless people. Just an opportunity to put a little bit of money into these poor peoples hands and possibly some money into the K9 unit too.

All movies take hard work, teams and teams of people and actors and lots of time and money hence never giving less than 5..if I can help it. But I have to give 4/10 because it so bad.

Aaron eckhart isnt a bad actor but has been doing these tv style movies for a while now so unless he has a divorce, children's college or a failed business venture to pay for id suggest being more picky in his acting career as we all know he can do better.

I feel bad but its a 4.....just about.

I've been a fan of Aaron Eckhart for years, and I usually like all of his movies.
trinaboice12 October 2023
IN A NUTSHELL: The story is about a cop whose canine partner gets killed in the line of duty. After losing his dog, Jake Rosser plummets deep into a sinister underworld to uncover the truth about who may be responsible.

The film was directed by John Stalberg Jr, who also wrote it with Carlyle Eubank.

THINGS I LIKED: I've been a fan of Aaron Eckhart for years, and I usually like all of his movies, so I was interested in seeing this one. The movie is a study that shows how both his character and the dog are muzzled by past traumas.

I also really like Stephen Lang as an actor. His characters always look like they have a long story to tell about their background.

The movie shows a very ugly side of what's happening in America now. The streets are filled with homeless people in tents surrounded by garbage and worse things. The story takes place in Los Angeles which, sadly, has turned into a complete dumpster fire of a city.

The color palette of the film is dirty and grimy, perfectly representing the filthy underworld the movie is about.

You'll learn some German words because cops speak to their canine partners in German! I've heard that German Shepherds are one of the smartest dogs.

There is a suspenseful scene with some action that utilizes very interesting camera angles. Well done.

The ending is really sweet.

THINGS I DIDN'T LIKE: The love interest is odd. The woman is a nurse with her own set of emotional baggage, so it's weird that she would be interested in an infamous, violent cop who has shown zero warmth toward her when they first met. She basically throws herself at him, vanishes for the majority of the story, and then shows up at the end of the movie with almost no more interaction with the cop.

The final villain looked like a cartoon character.

TIPS FOR PARENTS: Profanity, including F-bombs We see prostitutes, crazy people, and druggies on the streets An explosion kills people Violence Blood A variety of weapons are used Cigarettes and alcohol use We see people get killed in various ways.

Not very good.
Jim_Screechy20 October 2023
Aaron Eckhart is good and given the material at hand, delivers a performance difficult to criticise.

The rest of the cast ranges from bad to atrocious with many over acted deliveries and poor interpretation. I suspect the direction is at fault much of the time here, but the result is a hammy production that never has you anything more than superficially engaged.

There isn't anything interesting or exciting enough to grip you, and the film falls well short and anything remotely entertaining.

The plot is a simple premise but poorly done with overly long sequences, poor script and bad editing.

As usual there are the influenced reviews giving it high scores that can be largely ignored, but my honest advice is to simply miss this one. Chances are you won't enjoy it much (if at all) and if you do make it to the end, you'll probably realise it wasn't worth the investment in time.

Dog Can't Think Ahead
nogodnomasters26 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Officer Jake Rosser (Aaron Eckhart) is a K-9 cop on patrol. He talks to his dog like it is a person. Jake tells him stories about Iraq. He gets called to a crime scene. Things go bad. His dog gets shot and dies as he punches out an EMT who treats humans first over dogs. Jake is placed on leave and must see a shrink over his anger management issues. He wants revenge for his dog. Jake gets another dog. One that has a muzzle because she snaps. He trains with "Socks" who seems to be known by Dante, a street informer who does not speak much but like Huggy Bear gets all kinds of information.

I was pretty bored with the film which just seemed to go through the motions of a crime drama.

Guide: F-word. Implied sex. No nudity.

Not a film for animal lovers
rachelgreen-996377 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Do not watch this movie if you love dogs. I was initially keen to watch this movie but I wish I had not bothered. The trailer looks rather good, and gives the impression that it was going to be a revenge movie whereby he gets payback for the death of his dog. However, the movie left me feeling rather uncomfortable about the mistreatment of dogs and sad to think that this might actually go on in the world. The acting is not awful but I think more dogs died during this movie than actual people. Extremely disappointing and if this is what you think the public want to watch, I would not give up the day job.

Back in the day
TomatoesareRotten6 October 2023
They called this kind of effort " under the counter " ; they couldn't rent it so they made out it was better than it was and had gullible punters paying out for something of nothing. It is utterly woeful. The editing alone is astonishing in its ineptitude. The classic hat off hat on hat off nonsense from the junior high video projects. Where on earth did Ekhart fall foul of the casting agents ? He's utterly lame and then some. To think he keeps fit to add this nonsense to his resume. IF he ever retires, he won't be telling anyone about this on his resume, like many others, he is now a parody of himself.

Muzzle
tpsimpleman29 February 2024
It sounds like you're describing the movie "Muzzle," which is a 2018 crime thriller directed by Aaron Garrett. The film follows Jake Rosser as he seeks revenge for the death of his dog in Skid Row. As he delves deeper into the dark and dangerous world of the city, he uncovers shocking truths about those responsible for his loss. The movie is known for its intense atmosphere, gripping storyline, and strong performances from the cast. Overall, "Muzzle" offers a thrilling and suspenseful viewing experience that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. Obviously this is a very good movie. We loved it.

Well, it's no John Wick
darryl-9320621 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This began so well, a true buddy movie, with a dog. Of course the dog is killed and, for some reason, the police bosses really go to town on Eckhart, hanging him out to dry, so we see the process of his therapy, his coming to terms with the loss, but all the time he's wanting to find the people responsible for his dog's death. The acting was believable, and I was gripped by the action.

All good so far, and we understand his situation of loss, but the plot just unravels and there is a lot looseness to the rest of what happens. Several bad guys are mentioned here and there, and we're not too sure what's happening, but my main issue was the colleague who hates him, despite all the trouble Eckhart has been through, but suddenly in the 3rd act becomes his best mate FOR ABSOLUTELY NO REASON, and the happy ever after ending seems to happen all of a sudden, like the writers only had another 3 minutes to wrap the story before submission.

It was okay, but nothing special at all.

[5.5] A melting triangle in "130 degree" Fahrenheit
cjonesas18 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A very imbroglio film with unneat screenplay, plots and sub-plots. How many times do I need to see that ugly face of the psychiatrist or psychotherapist?! Came here to watch Ace and Socks, not mumbo jumbo K9 character officers with dark pasts and anger issues, let alone PTSD that is not very relatable and palpable here.

When you have a movie where you see more of a psychiatrist and a wannabe girlfriend, with mishmash German-speaking "ghost" people in the background and shadows of grunting dogs here and there, then you could averagely care and most of all, the ending did not help. Needed it to be that way?!

Triangle, 130 degree Fahrenheit and frying eggs on hot rocks!

unnecessary swearing
gabriellewatson20 November 2023
Unnecessary swearing throughout the film put me off watching it so turned it off after 25 mins. I was drawn to the film as I enjoy watching films about working dogs so I just felt really disappointed to be honest. I do not understand why writers feel the need to add swearing in the scripts as it just doesn't add anything to the film but makes me feel that it is poorly written as they are constantly filling up space with swear words instead of meaningful dialogue that helps the audience feel connected to the characters within the story. It shows a great skill set to be able to portray a character without having the swearing every 2 minuets.

Messed Up
taurushulk26 April 2024
One star for the dog, very nice and clever. It's about a smoking, boring, nasty, vomit, this is just another unhealthy show that been funded by lunatic tobacco company. Quite boring waste of time and money at triple speed to watch, short-sighted, trivial, tasteless, lengthy, ugly tat too, repulsive, see nothing, feel nothing, learn nothing from his body of work. Possibly the worst film ever, apart from the sequence, that was restaged, acting is dreadful, camera work amateurish. If don't know how to make a film, just donate money to people. Recommend Coco Ferme & Hilma, better than this film a lot.
