Testaments?
setgetsiin27 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I'm curious how the story will morph into the Testaments part of the book series IF it does. We'll have to see more of Hannah & Aunt Lydia, I think, but for now...

I'm sick of June and Hannah. It is the same. Thing. Over and over with that. She's going to be so focused on the one she CANNOT have that she's going to miss the ones she DOES have and that's...painful. Why is one more valuable than the other? She's going to lose the second family to the next blond that walks by and Nick also coming to claim his kid. I mean, I saw the Nick angle as soon as his wife was mentioned to be pregnant. We're going to have a Serena 2.0 when she has an unbaby and they want June's kid. Everyone seems to want June's kids. Except June (when she has them; then all of a sudden, they aren't as important or valuable). It's getting very annoying.

Watching Serena live the path she set up for other women is giving some satisfaction. Watching Joseph become the bigwig is also satisfying, but in the books he was THE WORST.

The smartest thing would be for Joseph to marry Hannah (doesn't he do that in the books? Or tries to?) and it be the ruse that everything is when it comes to What June Wants.

At least the show is sort of moving on in some regards, like Americans GO HOME and will Nick become more Sinister, plus I'm hoping they keep tabs on Janine and Esther. Janine is gonna 180 when she learns June lied about her son.

Things are getting tense
lydianorder2 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
It is nice to see Serena in the same predicament the handmaid's are in: her child taken from her, the lack of freedom, etc. There is a profound sense of poetic justice here, seeing her having to deal with Mrs. Wheeler who is more than ready to steal Serena's child, like the good Gilead wanna be wife she is. I find the violent protests in Canada by Canadians hard to believe though. Living in Canada, it seems a huge stretch for anything like that to happen here but it does paint a good picture of how unwelcome and unsafe refugees must feel sometimes when they find out how unwanted they are. I think the idea of 'new Bethlehem' is insane. Which refugee would even consider the risk of moving back and trusting a commander's word they would be safe there.

As A Palestinian
rawansham27 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was amazing I felt Jon as a mother myself

As a Palestinian living away from my country

Becous there's an occupation from Israel and

knowing that these settlements are real I feel

sick to my stomach, how we have children being

kidnapped from their parents and people

who've been in prison for years with absolutely no crimes just for being Palestinian.

And how the world is completely can see what's going on And remain silent .

Hope Jon is smart enough to not go there, hope it's end well I don't mind the slow moving of this show. So glad for what happening with Serana I felt bad for her at first but after she met Jon That changed.

Acting you can feel
haleyblanchette29 October 2022
June - what can I say except wow! The acting is so good it pulls at your soul. As a mother, I could feel how awful it must be to struggle as June and the other mothers of pre-Gilead America had struggled. Very emotional episode to tie together an already gripping series.

A Web of Compromises
badeclerck3 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
In the eighth episode of The Handmaid's Tale Season 5, tensions between American refugees and Canadian citizens escalate, fueling Joseph Lawrence's proposal for June to relocate to New Bethlehem, a semblance of Gilead-lite where she could live with Luke, Nichole, and potentially reunite with Hannah in the future. However, June's hesitance sparks conflict with Luke as they grapple with the complexities of their shared past and uncertain future.

Meanwhile, Serena finds herself in the unlikely role of a prisoner experiencing moments of fleeting happiness amidst the solitude of her detention center, culminating in a tense confrontation with Mrs. Wheeler, who adamantly denies Serena access to Noah, the child she has come to care for.

June's reluctant visit to Serena prompts a discourse on survival and vengeance, as she implores her former tormentor to adopt a facade of compliance while plotting her revenge. As Serena complies and returns to the Wheeler household, June grapples with her own sacrifices in pursuit of reuniting with Hannah, her palindrome child.

Amidst Lawrence's overtures for reconciliation and Nick's potential role in New Bethlehem, June attempts to negotiate Hannah's freedom in exchange for her compliance with Gilead's new paradigm. However, Lawrence's introspection reveals the moral ambiguity of his actions, while Mark Tuello's plea for June's patience underscores the precariousness of their situation.

A pivotal moment arrives with the delivery of a providential CD containing images of Hannah, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. June's jubilation at the news of Hannah's impending release culminates in a cathartic release of emotion, signaling a turning point in their arduous journey.

In this episode, The Handmaid's Tale delves into the intricacies of sacrifice, redemption, and the pursuit of justice amidst a landscape of uncertainty and moral ambiguity. As alliances shift and motives collide, the characters navigate the tangled web of their intertwined fates, grappling with the consequences of their actions in a world on the brink of collapse.

Canada vs Commander Lawrence
ttgttg28 October 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Commander Lawrence always gets what he wants in the end and this episode was the setup for Canada preparing to learn that the hard way.

Commander Lawrence has to be the one strategically baiting Canada into an attack that will lead to such a defeat that June will realize she has no choice but to agree to move to his New Bethlehem. She's the symbol he needs to legitimize the new colony and get others to go back so Gilead can join the U. N. I'm pretty sure the video of Hannah that came out of nowhere and the intelligence on the location of the wives training facility was his backup plan in case June said no to moving back. Did you really think we'd get through a season without multiple people being slaughtered on June's behalf?

Serena getting a taste of her own medicine is a nice side story that I wish was the main story. But, as long as Hannah is still in Gilead, we'll just have to bear with June's storyline for what feels like eternity.

Motherland
bobcobb30113 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I think this show got a memo to ramp up the refugee/immigrant treatment and I am not really sure what the end goal is for this? Serena will not be a handmaid, as much as I think it could be both poetic justice and compelling television, but she also is not going to be stuck in this kind of role for too long either. Where is the drama? And where is she exactly that she can get all of these visitors to her?

The show is sort of losing its core message a little bit and the random bone thrown about the raid and potentially saving Hannah is not enough to keep me giving it high scores for long on IMDB.

All confrontation
Leofwine_draca17 December 2022
Another vapid and inconsequentional episode that's simply treading water until the final episode, still a painful distance away at this point. The only emphasis of this one is to have some of the characters shout at each other as relationships fracture and figures are driven to breaking point (but never actually break). Serena seems to be the main focus, her story developing in a way parallel to Offred's, but I'm failing to see the point when the show has pushed and pulled her in so many directions by this stage. As for June, she's just ranting and raving and swearing at everybody...like usual. No thanks.
