Prodigious Talent Hobbled by a Difficult Marriage
Arthur Lowe will forever be associated in the minds of British television viewers with CORONATION STREET and DAD'S ARMY. However he was a versatile actor whose range extended from straight drama to American musicals (he sang in the original London production of CALL ME MADAM with Dolores Gray in the early Fifties). James Fothergill's documentary suggests that Lowe never quite fulfilled his potential, due chiefly to his reluctance to live apart from his actress wife Joan Cooper for any length of time. He turned down several good roles in his post-DAD'S ARMY career, including a big part in Warren Beatty's HEAVEN CAN WAIT (1978). Instead he did run-of-the-mill sitcoms and unmemorable touring theater productions, attracting good business but doing little for his reputation. When he died of a stroke aged only 66, his career was virtually at an end. This documentary reveals the private site of Lowe - sometimes he was so introverted as to appear rude to his fellow- performers, and frequently he left the decision-making over his career to Joan, even though she was more interested in her own rather than his future.
