Idea Is Okay, Despite Biased Formula
heatherlyblossom19 August 2013
Warning: Spoilers
As a Realtor and design enthusiast, I thought I'd enjoy seeing these two sides compete. But I find myself seriously stressed by every single aspect of this show, and I think the formula is to blame:

1) The homeowners must watch way too much HGTV because they have THE MOST unreal expectations on what Hilary the Designer can do for them. For example, homeowners always give Hilary a $20,000-$50,000 budget (up to a very rare $70,000 budget) to basically rebuild their 90-year-old, 1500 sqft, 3 bedroom home, and turn it into a sparkly new 4,000 sqft, 5 bedroom home with all the bells and whistles, that also includes a finished basement underneath the home where there is currently a concrete slab on top of a pile of dirt. And in EVERY show, at least one wall must come down.

HOWEVER, we usually find in 90-year-old homes, and in almost every episode, that behind-the-wall issues basically drain Hilary of her entire teensy-weensy budget, leaving the homeowners emotionally drained and unfairly frustrated with her. Most viewers may blame the homeowners for being so unreasonable. Well, so do I.

Meanwhile, David the Realtor is given an $850,000 budget to find their move-in ready dream home in the same neighborhood.

2) Once David the Realtor has shown them their dream home in their same neighborhood, it's consistently, approximately $100,000 over their original budget.

3) Fortunately for both David and the homeowners, Hilary the Designer has scraped every cent together to somehow get at least a little something exquisitely done in their home (the gal is talented!), which then boosts their profit a consistent, surprising, $100,000, which David then points out will allow them to buy the $950,000 home he last showed them, right before they make their "tough" decision.

Basically, using Hilary's hard work against her.

4) Meanwhile, Hilary has had to continually educate the homeowners regarding the shabby state of their home's construction, then get blamed and verbally abused by the homeowners, and then allow David to take the final word to win his argument.

Perhaps I am wrong, but I sense something is amiss with this formula, leaving me with a single question...

Did David create this show? :-)

Happy Watching!

Just Watch The Last 10 Minutes of the Show
drjtaylorjr-728-42560920 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit, when I first discovered this show--I WAS HOOKED. I actually love the hosts and their squabbles; I thought they were funny. BUT, it does follow the SAME formula: 1) couple disagree about the home, whether to keep it or move, 2) Hilary is never satisfied with the money they offer for renovations, 3) David rarely finds a worthy new home on the first try, 4) Hilary runs into problems with her renovations and need more money. and she NEVER fully completes the "asked-for" renovations, and 5) the majority of the time the couple decides to stay and not list it. FYI--the need for a "mud room" seems to be an issue quite often.

Well, I tired of the same formula, but I still liked the show, BUT I discovered a more satisfying technique to watching it. I DVR the show, and watch the last ten minutes of the show. It's all I need, and it's satisfying enough.

A wake up call to renovation
renocowgirl-40-7801696 January 2017
I disagree with all the negative hype. The show is realistic in pointing out that older homes often have hidden issues. The disappointment when the remodel goes astray may be sincere or faked, but in the end, bring homes the truth. I find it amazing how often the buyers decide to stay even though there wish list couldn't be completed. Immediately sure they look at far more than 3 new houses but for the sake of time only show the 3. If you've ever worked in real estate, the term "Buyers are Liars!!" This show proves that that "must have lists" become shorter. We don't always know what we want and like most things in life, learn what are priorities really are. Love the interaction, tongue in cheek, between these hosts.

It's really all about Hilary and her talent.
shanghainoon-110771 April 2022
I think no one on HGTV, Magnolia, and any other home show or network can touch the design talent of Hilary. Even when the budget is low she never skimps on the quality of her designs. Very classy and timeless. And she decorates for the clients, not to showcase herself. (hint, hint.. to so many of the designers on other shows).

Of course, the best parts are the first 10 minutes and the last 10 minutes.

Not too interested in the middle parts of the show. For me it's all about Hilary's talent.

Addictive but....DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA
Sjverble11 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I have spent most of a gloomy cold weekend watching this series which is very interesting, informative & somewhat addicting but boy oh boy the drama and repetition! The dialogue must be pre-determined in adding just enough drama to keep people "interested" because it's clearly outside of natural behavior. Both sides of the equation are just downright rude and over the top sometimes. As much as I've come to like the main characters, I'm grateful for the opportunity to fast forward through the repetitive lines that are clearly required of them to speak every episode. All in all,I really like the show but I could do with a whole lot less sass & script & more natural behavior.

Too many stupid clients
chi_town_fed11 July 2021
After watching the majority of home owners decide to "love it" I found this show to be mundane. No matter what David finds rarely have seen an owner choose to list it even if it is obviously an exceptionally better value than the junk they live in.

Many of the renovations look nice, but they don't include important things a newer home offers such as a new roof, or hundreds of additional square feet. Since I basically know that 90 percent of the homeowners are not going to list it, there is no suspense.

The utterly ridiculous decisions to remain in a smaller, older renovated home almost every time grew tiresome to watch. The home owners obviously staged pros and cons discussions are a joke. The phony "new value" of the renovated homes always show an instant 120 - 140 percent return on investment ROI which is ludicrous.

I also grew tired of couples who want to buy a perfect home in a perfect location without the budget to afford it. They have the appetite of a king but a Charlie Brown wallet.

Solid and entertaining competition show. The two host have great chemistry which contributes to the fun. I also like the contractor who has a great relationship with the designer. I'm not sure how anyone can hate this show!

I love this show!! I give Hillary alot of credit. Some of these homeowners are ridiculous to say the least especially Sandra in Season 6, episode 6. Her expectations with a $60,000 budget was ridiculous and nothing pleased her. God Bless her husband and children..lol She is what is known as the neighborhood Karen!!

For heaven sake have a home inspection first!
jeanette-chen21 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I love the designs at the end so I suffer through the cookie cutter show but I really wish the formula could change up once in a while. It's horrible to see Hilary's tiny budget get sucked up on plumbing, wiring, or hvac every single time. Even when they do (rarely) come up with more money somehow, something else will go wrong to absolutely ensure the whole project will not get done. At least once I'd love to see Hilary get to finish her whole plan. I also hate the way the contractor or Hilary decides what gets cut instead of asking the homeowner what they would prefer. Finally, why can other shows on hgtv (most of which are also filmed in Canada) do so much more with a tiny budget?!! Think property brothers! Though it's in America, fixer upper can redo a whole house for $50,000!! How much are Hilary's contractors charging for their work that replacing a furnace on love it or list it will cost as much as taking out a wall, pantry, gutting and redesigning a whole kitchen on another show?!! Please change the formula or make sure the house is sound before giving Hilary the budget!

Interesting team and idea but horrible homeowners!
biba_yu23 May 2018
I kinda like Hilary and David, there is a cute chemistry between them and their bickering is funny. Also, I like the idea of the show, that looks promising. However, homes and homeowners are just horribly picked. They seem to chose most horrible people they could find and that made show almost unbearable to watch. Also, they picked enormous, expensive homes, and instead of helping people who really could need help, they were helping a$$holes who were constantly whining about their "tiny" homes with 2 kitchens, 4 bedrooms, large yard etc, etc... There are people living in shoe-boxes! Most people in the world live in tiny flats, most like 90% families have one single bathroom. And here we see families living in large, and I mean enormous houses with large yards, and complain how unhappy they are with their tiny tiny homes. To add to insult, so many of them were acting like they hired Hilary so they were "disappointed" with her work, when it's quite obvious their house is repaired on the tv with huge discount and they applied for the show hoping they will get it. And their remarks, some were so appalling. One women like lived in large but filthy house and complained with very rude words when David was showing her homes. There were so many unpleasant people I just could not watched the show anymore. I live in a tiny flat, I work a lot, yes, but well, not everyone is lucky. They would be better of with some people who really need help. These are just most awful people they could find and I don't enjoy watching them.

Entertaining and Hilarious!
sarahanne-1138319 March 2019
I love this show!! Yes, sure, the show follows a similar plot outline for each show but doesn't every show/movie to an extent? You're watching HGTV not HBO. I think the show delivers on its promise which is to present familes who are considering the idea of moving to a new home or staying in their current one. At the end, I genuinely don't know what the families are going to do which I think makes for great TV! I've read some comments that say that the familes are dramatic or Hilary is rude. Guys. It's a TV show about house buying/decorating. Relax. I think Hilary and David are hilarious together and they crack me up in every episode. Do I get so hooked that a can't miss a single second!? No. But I enjoy the show all the way through and think it's awesome entertainment. Isn't drama why we watch TV in the first place? Give it a try.

Best hgtv show but so 20th century
rayresnyc2 November 2021
David is at a total disadvantage because he doesn't get to do a virtual staging while hillary gets to do whatever she wants within (??) budget. He should at least get to do a virtual staging with the contestants' stuff.

List It, Please!
Chalicewell24 February 2014
When it first aired, I liked the show, but it's degraded into something difficult to watch. Yes, Hillary and David can be abrupt and snotty, but I am SO over the homeowners. The spouse that wants to stay is always negative of anything David shows them, and when Hillary can't deliver on her design due to bad wiring or asbestos, they b!tch about that, too. Lately, I've seen shows where Hillary has $100,000+ to renovate and she still can't do the whole makeover.

It drives me crazy when David finds a house that meets all the requested needs but the couple still 'Loves' their old house even if there is no more space, just a pretty paint job and new decor.

For good reno stuff, I watch Mike Holmes, Property Brothers or Income Property. Those guys can do the job.

The renos make me NUTS!
LuLuBelleJ12 February 2016
I like the show.

Well, rather I should say I DO like the following: 1.David. He's the best part of the show 2.When they show homes for sale in the U.S. (Those dingy, expensive, urban Canadian neighborhoods all look the same, and are all so incredibly ugly to look at) 3.I like the before and after concept ...(however, the reveals have all started to look the same)

What I DON'T Like:

Does anyone EVER inspect the properties before renovating? Why in the world do they always say "This MUST be done" to a repair that the owner can always do another time at a later date to save on their budget?????? {MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION} ***If Fixer Upper's, Chuck and Jo or Flip or Flops's, Tarek & Christina or The Property Brothers can TOTALLY renovate a WHOLE ENTIRE house anywhere from $45,000-$ 100,000 ~Why in the world can't Hillary get just 2 or 3 rooms done for that SAME $45,000-$100,000??!! And without imposing or exploiting some major crisis in every single episode? ~If it were my home, and Hillary comes to me saying, "your HVAC is outdated and on the brink, so this MUST get fixed, so I'm taking the guest bedroom off the list", I would respond, "I can do this at a later date, and just focus on the renos we discussed!"

Hillary's work always seems cosmetically super-staged, vs. real, structural differences as well. {Did I mention the use of the same grey couch used in almost every episode?}

Dear Canadian contractors, (Fergus and Eddy) PLEASE stop your WHINING every time something needs fixing! ( isn't this your job??...) I prefer the American crew MUCH better..

Or here's another... How about NOT USING PREMIUM DECOR MATERIALS (i.e.: Quartz countertops, Viking Stoves/Ranges) to save some money to make these poor people's homes more functional and nice???? Since when is Maytag or Kitchen Aid, or similar not worth using at half the price?? ~ Hillary uses the MOST EXPENSIVE stuff she can find all the time. I'm not saying use cheap, but come on!!! {I've seen some beautiful compromises on Flip or Flop} I just don't always see the "value" in the work. Seems like the contractors and Hillary come out on the longer end of the stick -a lot.

I feel bad for the folks who don't always get what they pay for.

David, I love you, ~you're hilarious! Probably the top reason I watch the show, because honestly, the project reveals are usually underwhelming and always look the same. ~how about that reappearing grey sofa?

I don't even like Jillian Harris one bit, her design aesthetic is awful, and she hardly does any significant work whatsoever, and she's just plain annoying. Nope, ~Love it or List it, Too can go...

Great Show
helloauntb7 November 2019
Hillary is hands down the best designer on HGTV. I love watching her transform a hideous room into a fabulous, beautiful space. I would give the show a 10 if it weren't for David. He is irritating in the extreme. I can't watch more than two episodes without having to turn David off. Get Hillary a new partner!

Rimzyfan20 July 2021
For me this is one of the best HGTV shows. There is a very nice chemistry between Hilary and David, and I like the British humor side of Hilary. I find it very exciting to see whether homeowners will stay or leave their current house. Hilary is a great designer, her designs always turn out to be very classy.

Love this show!

Mixed Feelings (Spoiler?
amber_m5528 September 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler? I do like the show for the most part... but there is definitely a few things that just bother me. Why does it have to be such a competition? Hilary tries to make their space a little easier for their new lifestyle and save them the trouble moving if they don't have to and David finds them another home for what would make them happier if they just cannot stay in their current home. What does one get out of their choice? Bragging rights? Why is that important? It should be about making the homeowners happy in the end.

Nonetheless, I realized later its bc it brings more viewers in for a little drama... but WHY do some of these homeowners treat them like dirt???? I get that one wants to move and the other doesn't, but Hilary and David are both there to try to help them! The episode I'm currently watching just has me shaking my head when the woman says "I'm not talking to Hilary anymore" and speaks to her with such disrespect. Like why? Seems immature... Hilary is helping them. How can it possibly be her fault when things with either the foundation, plumbing, or wiring issues come up as a major issue and eat a chunk of their budget? If its an older home, what do you expect? Then they get nasty toward her for not getting that and EVERYTHING else (most being ridiculous requests for their budget) they asked for.

Which brings me how naïve these homeowners are... they act like their money is gold. You give her an unlimited amount of money and she'll give you what you asked for if its possible... but to think your gonna get a full renovation for the entire house, fix any issues, add a bedroom, add a bathroom, furnish basement, brand new kitchen, knock down walls for open spaces, etc. all for a budget under 100K is completely absurd. If you honestly need ALL of that, why renovate in the first place? Wouldn't it just be easier to move somewhere that offers it all or less and then just renovate 1 or 2 things? I just don't understand why they act ridiculous when they cant get every little thing, like children throwing a tantrum. Life is full of compromises and in the end it should be about what's better for your family. Cant always get everything you want with set limitations.

Added to that is when the spouses treat each other poorly... why cant they both be open minded and respect eachothers opinions/feelings? They did agree for David and Hilary to come out in the first place... and not to mention you're on TV.. I don't get why some of them act like children.

Could be good but - HORRIBLE DRAMA
projectmanager820127 April 2014
This could be a great show. I have tried to get through it because I love the idea of seeing the finished product and what they choose. However, the soul crushing stupidity of the fake drama stops me from completing even one episode. Do they search for complete A holes to yell and act like a six year old or did they just hit the A hole lottery?

On top of the drama and antics by the homeowners the "surprise" every time something is screwed up is laughable. Here is an idea, how about you get someone in there that has done the job before?

I could not be more shocked that this show has continued to air as long as it has.

WTF HGTV?

Too much formula, but I love the design ideas!
TooMuchTV626 January 2020
This show is completely predictable format-wise, especially as far as David's real estate listings go. But, I love seeing how Hilary can visualize major changes to an existing house, and execute them for spectacular results. The show itself seems unfair, as David routinely shows homes outside of people's stated budgets, while Hilary is rarely ever given any extra money, even when a pre-existing building code or health and safety problem arises. To make it worse, she always returns at least her budget in increased home value, and often much more value, which is then used to justify spending over budget on a new home. She should at least be allowed to get an inspection and give a cost estimate. Still, sometimes people will go with the customized remodel, which is nice to see.

Boring and predicate
Andrea_mceachron4 January 2014
Hilary is always lacking on major renovations (bathroom, kitchen, additional rooms, etc) then they " love" the house because of pretty paint and decor. She makes promises that there is no way she can deliver, then gets into arguments with the family. Why is there no preliminary home inspection before she makes her promises? At times David finds homes that are above budget, but it's always exactly what is asked for. Why would someone stay in a home that does not have adequate space just because it is their first home together? That is completely unrealistic. The worst shows are when children who have no financial input get a "say" in the decision. That makes no sense at all. Time to add more Income Property, and bring back Mike Holmes. Andrea

Still like the show
sbwotoronto24 July 2020
Earlier episodes Hilary accomplished most of what homeowners asked for and delivered (took place in the US). I think the show changed by producers. More of the homes they showed were older and outdated (guaranteed with issues) with some clueless homeowners giving budgets that were impossible to complete what they requested. These homes were in Toronto, Canada. Then the drama starts. Hilary does say that the budget is slim and can't always complete what they request. I've seen later episodes that have newer homes and looks like episodes were done back in the States again.

I think people also need to realize there is a difference between Love it or list it and Property Brothers and Income Properties. Income properties basements are finished with a given budget. Property Brothers for the most part they are updating rooms and will cut costs in order to make the budget if there are issues. Homeowners are also helping which reduce labor costs. For love it or list it there are structural changes, additions (bathroom, bedroom) which costs more with a given budget from the homeowners.

Hilary and Dave have good onscreen chemistry which is fun.

unbelievably BAD!!!
fscarpenter4 November 2013
This show reeks of amateur hour. The realtor David never delivers what the buyers ask for. But the real aggravating part of this show is Hillary asking for must haves then making grand promises but ALWAYS coming up short. Then to top it off, she becomes argumentative and confrontational with the homeowners. In fact these are the 2 most unprofessional "professionals" I have ever seen. Why does HGTV even keep this show on the air? 2 words. Property Brothers. Now that is a decent show. The brothers take into account how much a project is going to cost and then delivering on the budget they have to work with. You get to see the conversion of an ugly outdated property into a beautiful work of art. Same with Scott M. on Income Property. The skinny little know it all David and his uppity English cohort take rudeness and incompetence to a whole new level.
