- When Peter is suspended by the FBI for a crime he didn't commit, he is forced to run a sting with Neal and the gang to catch Mozzie's shooter, and clear his name.
- Mozzie was shot by a hit-man but surgery saved him. Neal agrees to go by the FBI book to see the hit-man, soon identified as Julian Larssen, and whoever hired him caught and punished. Larssen is suspiciously easily arrested after the forgers help burn his known aliases except one, but somehow managed to plant false evidence pointing to Burke as the killer. That suffices for Peter's suspension from the FBI, leaving only Neal's ways.—KGF Vissers
- After a recap of the cliff-hanging event of the last episode, we open with Mozzie (Willie Garson) being rushed to the hospital and narrowly avoiding death.
With Mozzie in a medically induced coma Peter (Tim DeKay) tells Neal (Matt Bomer) he can do more for his friend outside the hospital. Julian Larson (Paul Blackthorne) is our suspect and in an effort to target him they burn all his aliases and attempt to allow him to obtain one new one.
Peter goes to work tracking down all Larson's fake names and Neal tracks down all the forgers he knows. Neal tells the forging community Larson is the guy who shot Mozzie and requests that when he comes to them they give him the alias Justin Springer.
Mozzie wakes up. Neal tells him the bullet just missed his heart. To Mozzie's joy, Neal has him in the hospital under a fake name. Mozzie has no memory of the shooter.
After Neal hangs up with Peter, we see he's being followed by Larson. Neal realizes this and the two come face-to-face in an alley. When Neal says he'll never help him get out of the city, Larson counters that he can offer him the identity of "the man behind the curtain." When Neal still says no, Larson says this person ordered Mozzie's shooting and killed Kate.
Neal tells Peter and Elizabeth (Tiffani Thiessen) about the conversation and says he wants to handle this through the justice system.
Peter leads a team which bursts into the apartment where Larson is staying. They grab him and quickly find a gun.
Mozzie tells Neal the equation inside the music box "builds something." He was shot for that code and he doesn't want to let someone else beat him to the punch. He admits he told Peter that Neal was going after Fowler and he feels like a traitor. Since Fowler didn't kill Kate, Neal says Mozzie did him a favor.
Peter questions Larson, but he won't say anything. Peter is pulled out and told there was only one print found. INSIDE the gun, and it matches to Peter. The only way the print could have gotten there is if Peter assembled the gun. Agent Rowe from DOJ places Peter on suspension. Hughes (James Rebhorn) has no chioce but to allow the action. Larson is allowed to leave. Peter must leave too, since he is not allowed inside the building.
Peter tells Neal that DOJ has pulled all of his files. They wonder how Larson could have gotten his prints and Peter recalls a mug going missing from his desk.
Diana (Marsha Thomason) and Jones (Sharif Atkins) find video evidence from a few days earlier of a shadowy figure taking the mug from Peter's desk and using his computer. While the figure resembles Neal, the person is careful not to have his face seen on camera. It's Larson, and Jones notices the cup in Larson's hand. Jones then asks Diana about the secrets she has with Peter. She replies that Peter needs to tell Jones what is going on.
Peter tells Neal that while Larson was on his computer, he erased the name of Nigerian prince Frederick Bilal from his file. Bilal handles a lot of imports and exports out of New York harbor and hangs out at an exclusive yacht club.
Sara (Hilarie Burton Morgan) gets them into Bilal's club since her company insures one of its members. At the bar, Peter strikes up a horse racing conversation with Bilal over some beers. Peter determines Bilal is willing to bend shipping rules for a favor. Neal manages to get a look at the log book of one of the charters and finds one of Larson's aliases listed. Neal has a "my-way" plan to bring these guys down.
Neal gets Sara on board while Jones is filled-in on all the background before agreeing to participate as well. Sara has computer software which allows Neal to speak in Larson's voice. Mozzie ultimately agrees to help with the sting.
The plan is to spook Bilal into contacting Larson and have him make that call to Neal, who will be posing as Larson. They will then have Bilal busted for smuggling and get him to roll on Larson.
Despite a few hiccups, the plan works to perfection. Bilal is grabbed while in possession of antique Nazi china. Bilal calls Larson and sets up a meeting.
Sara goes to DOJ and tells them her "client" is being harassed by Peter.
Larson puts on latex finger prints, which is how he got Peter's prints inside the gun. He is about to set up Peter again when Rowe and Hughes burst in. Hughes puts two and two together and figures the frame up. Rowe takes Larson into custody. While Peter and Neal watch, Larson gets the upper hand on Rowe. Peter grabs a police horse and chases Larson down. Peter punches Larson in the face and gets him back in custody.
Neal calls Mozzie to give him the good news about Larson. Mozzie tells him that he has "built our equation."
Sara and Peter still don't know why Larson was moving the Nazi china. It was being sent to Argentina. and Sara offers to head down and heck into things. Since her empoyer does business in Central America, it won't look odd for her to be there.
Peter returns to work and Larson offers to give up the man who gave the order. Peter isn't interested.
This is cut with Mozzie showing Neal a fractal design he's made. Neal says he knows who is behind everything.
Back to Peter telling Larson the only deal he'll make is one to protect him from the person calling the shots. Larson says "his name is Vincent Adler."
Back to Neal saying: "We both know who he is, Moz. He's the man who made me who I am today."
