Of course you don't just luck into such stories as most of Earth is inhabited and rescuers are looking for survivors after just hours. Here it's a guy who didn't send out a mayday signal on a boat alone. No one is looking for him. He is obviously someone who survives by himself and knows how to survive so this episode shows him making largely good choices. There are other episodes where every choice people make is a stupid one getting them into greater danger. Those people wouldn't even make it out of the sinking boat in this episode let alone survive for more than a week on a raft.
