Best TWD episode

This is my favorite TWD episode. The end shot with the herd in the distance, the ominous darkness. Still gives me chills when I watch it.

Wow!
g-bodyl9 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is the eleventh episode of the second season of Walking Dead and all I can say is what I wrote in summary, "Wow!" This is a fantastic episode that has even more shock value, including a sinister plot I should have seen coming, but didn't. The character development, especially with Shane, is great as Shane loses his humanity, as Dale feared previously.

In this episode, "Better Angels," everyone is shocked about the death of Dale, but none other than Carl who blames himself. Meanwhile, Shane gets even worse as he secretly executes Randall and cooks up a plan to get rid of Rick, which will turn out to be a serious mistake on Shane's part.

Overall, this is an episode that is both surprising and emotional. The last scene just came out of nowhere and that will ultimately lead to grave consequences in the future. A fantastic episode that includes another death of a major character. If you want to know who, just watch this episode. I rate this episode 10/10.

Antagonism, guilt and consequences
TheLittleSongbird9 June 2018
Had heard nothing but great things about 'The Walking Dead' from friends and IMDb reviewers. It took a while to get round to watching, both from being busy and also not being sure whether it would be my cup of tea. Finally getting round to it a few years ago and slowly working my way through it, having had a very long to watch and review list, 'The Walking Dead' turned out to be very much my cup of tea and as good as the hype made it out to be, have found it extremely addictive.

All the previous episodes of Season 2 were very good to great, but the season nearly has a high point in "Better Angels". And a strong reminder of how Seasons 1-5 of 'The Walking Dead' to me were absolutely brilliant and seeing the show in its full glory days (Season 6 was uneven, Season 7 was a huge disappointment and am still debating whether to watch Season 8). It is as emotional, complex and as tense as one would expect , at the same time it has adrenaline and guts.

It still shocks me at how an intelligent, well-made (so much so that it is easy to mistake it for a film) show about zombies could be made when so many films have tried and failed abysmally to do so.

"Better Angels" is one of the tightest and most emotionally investable episodes of Season 2 for me. It doesn't feel as heavy in talk as a few other episodes of the season, generally the show up to this point did this aspect well if of course variably, but do prefer the more intense, more action-heavy suspenseful episodes.

Only one thing stops it from being a high point and that is that Carl is written here in a way that is pretty infuriating, even for someone whose moral compass has vastly shifted and feeling the consequences of his actions in the previous episodes, some of his behaviour is just idiotic and senseless.

Like all the episodes of the show, "Better Angels" is incredibly well made in the production values, with gritty and audacious production design, photography of almost cinematic quality, effects that look good, have soul and are not overused or abused and pretty frightening make-up that make the zombies even more terrifying. The music is haunting and affecting, having presence but never being too intrusive.

The writing generally is intelligent and thought-provoking, with lots of tension and emotional resonance and already showing signs of character complexity and multiple layer storytelling. The more eventful scenes are thrilling and terrifying as well as uncompromising.

Appreciated the ever strong and still progressing story and character building (the development of the now dangerous Shane and honouring Dale are the high point), which the episode has a bigger emphasis on, and that the pace is never dull or rushed. There is a lot of tension and emotion.

Everything is tautly paced without rushing through the more important parts and emotionally complex. The world building is stunningly immersive and effective. Direction is smart and atmospheric while the show throughout has been strongly acted. Jon Bernthal has some of his meatiest material up to this point, and it is a performance of dead-on intensity that it's almost scary.

Overall, really great and this close to being a season high point. 9/10 Bethany Cox

how to end with one of the best characters in the series
MomentIMDB11 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Shane managed in two seasons to be one of the best characters in the series, hated and at the same time loved. A character that developed very well and that gave us great moments. Jon Berthnal managed to play Shane in an excellent way and his chemistry with the other actors is very good. As for the chapter, it is one of the best in the series. good points: the episode maintains a very tense atmosphere and the direction and soundtrack accompany it very well. Shane's character was spectacular and his development throughout the episode was very good. I loved the randall zombie revelation and the scene gave me the chills. When night comes, the atmosphere is very tense and tense. The best part of the episode was when Shane points to Rick. The dialogue is magnificent and spectacular. Shane's death is one of the best moments of the series. I loved the performance of Andrew Lincoln and it perfectly conveyed the pain of killing his best friend and the change that Rick will have. And another epic moment is when Carl points to Rick and Shane turns and Carl kills him and we have a shot of the horde approaching. The Cliffhanger is one of the best and most epic of the series.

A Great Perspective that the Season will End in its Climax
claudio_carvalho13 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The group of survivors is organizing the preparation for the winter with supplies and patrols, following the instructions of Rick. Carl is uncomfortable, feeling responsible for the death of Dale and he talks to Shane about what had happened in the swamp. He asks Shane to give the weapon back to Daryl and Shane talks to Rick about the problem. While Rick and Carl are having a conversation, Shane works hard and Lori tells to him that she is not sure whether the baby is his or Rick's.

Shane snaps, releases Randall and walks with him to the field. Out of the blue, he breaks Randall's neck, hides his body and simulates that Randall has beaten him up and escaped. Daryl and T-Dog and Rick and Shane seek Randall out in the real estate. While Daryl and T-Dog find Randall's body, Shane threatens Rick with his weapon, forcing him to defend himself. Meanwhile Carl arrives in the scene and draws the gun that his father gave to him.

"Better Angels" is an episode that begins slow but ends in the best moment of the show. I do not understand why Lori had the strange conversation with Shane about her baby when the guy seems to have come down. What would be her intention telling to Shane that she is not sure of who might be the father of her baby? Motivate him?

The conclusion is unexpected with the loss of another lead character and I have no idea the path that the screenplay will head from now on. The walkers heading to the farm is a great perspective that the Season will end in its climax and we fans will have to wait for a long time to see the sequence of this show. My vote is nine.

Title (Brazil): "Better Angels"

Note: On 10 April 2016, I saw this show again.

Hello, there is a psycho on the loose.
deltaop18 October 2013
Warning: Spoilers
The show keeps losing the way and finding it back again. This was one of the best episodes this season, after the disastrous last one.

From, the start this episode focuses on Shane's character. We have seen flashes of his weird side earlier but in this episode, during and after his sequences with poor Randall, do we really get to see how psychotic and deranged he is.

The moonlit prairie scene is probably the best-acted and most emotional scene of the season. Two men, polar opposites of one another confront each other. One is clam and calculated while the other is a rabid dog bent on vengeance. Yeah, it is Rick and Shane, and you will have to watch to find out who made it out of the duel.

Not to mention, this episode also reveals a startling, though implausible revelation about how one can become a walker.

The Plot Thickens
aaronmcmurtry112 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After watching the show since day one, I've become very fond of it. However, resent episodes have left me little more than displeased. It seemed as if the show was becoming a soap opera, where all everyone does is bitch and cause conflict... But I am glad to say that my theory had be demolished after this episode.

This episode took in all the boring, and passing information and brought it all together. "Look no bites." "It must be from scratches." But we know now that something is in the air that is causing all non-bit or non-scratched people into zombies.(When you watch the last 3 episodes it always shows a show of the wind blowing the windmill, coincidence - I think not.)

I look forward very much to how this is going to pan out in the next episode, hopefully it continues to become great like season one and put some character development behind - It is unneeded after a solid 5 episodes of just that.

The next episode and Season 3 will hopefully blow are minds, after this one it's hard to disagree.

Incredible character arc completed!
and_mikkelsen10 January 2024
What an incredible episode! Right from the beggining the episode does notbwaste any time and only gets more and more intense as Shane has commited to his ideals and needs and does not want Rick to stand in his way!

Shanes arc has been one of the best, and the most memorable from this season! Seeing him slowly descend into madness as he looses his humanity, has been captivating and intense! Whenever he was on screen you never knew what to expect!

Looking back at his arc and knowing where things are healing.. he was just ahead of his time!

The final confrontation and scenes in the moonlight was expertly shot and directed!! Incredible tension and one of the best scenes this season!

Tension Builds Towards Season Climax
slightlymad2225 October 2014
Yay T-Dog gets some dialogue. So I'll expect him to bite the dust in the final episode.

Plot In A Paragraph: As Carl suffers due to feeling the consequences of his actions. Shane's behaviour becomes more and more dangerous.

Jon Bernthall gives his best performance as Shane, He does a lot of wrong things in this episode, but he actually was right in saying Rick needed to talk to Carl. Scott Wilson is once again excellent as Hershell and Andrew Lincoln is as brilliant as always Rick who wants to honour Dale by trying to cling to humanity, but also will do what is needed to, to protect his family.

Bring on the season finale.

Lori McBeth
snoozejonc17 October 2021
With emotions running high following a character death and the impending release of Randall, Lori has an impactful conversation with Shane.

This is a strong episode with some important character moments and an intriguing set-up of the series 2 finale.

The plot slowly racks up the tension for the majoirty of the episode before it boils over into a number of shocking moments. One part involving Carl seems a bit contrived, but for me it works well for the character and doesn't hurt the episode.

I cannot say too much about the plot details without spoiling, but it's safe to say that Lori is either careless or very careful with certain words in this episode. For now I think I'll go for the latter as i am somewhat of a cynic.

There are some very memorable character moments, particularly for Shane, Rick and Lori, whilst others like Carl, Glenn, Daryll and Randall also contribute well. Even Theodorre Douglas has something to do in this episode and he is entertaining whilst doing so. All actors are as good as ever, especially Jon Bernthal and Andrew Lincoln.

Visually it is excellent, with wonderful cinematography that tells the story and heightens the tension. The zombie effects are as well made and gross as ever.

Are they kidding us???
smerdakas19 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This is perhaps the best episode from Season 2 - BUT the last minute destroys everything.

The plot goes perfect: Shane plans seriously to kill Rick, so he gets him out into the woods to search for Randall who's gone "missing". In the meantime, most of the group is in the house, scared that Randall will bring his armed friends to the farm. After hours of walking, the two guys end up in an open space - the perfect place for the coming showdown. Rick finally understands what's going on, he manages to kill Shane in a very clever way, and he waits there thinking about what has just happened.

Everything perfect so far.

Then... Carl appears. Are they serious?? After all the distance Rick and Shane have traveled in the woods Carl just pops up?? In addition, everybody in the house is on his guard - and nobody notices that the boy is missing?? Who's buying this??? And when Rick moves towards his son, THEN (only then!)zombie-Shane gets on his feet and goes for Rick (without Rick noticing or Carl warning him), THEN Carl "Clint Eastwood" kills Shane with one shot over Rick's shoulder, and THEN a herd appears (apparently the fight between Rick and Shane couldn't attract not even one damn walker, but the gunshot attracted hundreds of them...). And a few seconds before the end we see that all this has happened within a few yards distance from the farmhouse... Come oooon!

By far the worst, the most disappointing ending. I expected a little more realism, guys, and a little more respect for us. What do they thing we are, stupid??

Only one way to save this show now...
tbmforclasstsar12 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Speechless. Whole heartedly disappointed. To quote Patton Oswalt's story about an open mic comedian named Dr. Pepper, "I don't know where to start or where to begin." "The Walking Dead" has taken a turn so ridiculous, there is literally only one way I can see the show recovering.

So let's talk about last night (and again SPOILER ALERT if you didn't read it at the top). We arrive back on the farm for a speech given by Rick about the life and legacy of Dale on the group. Dale was a good dude. Dale talked a lot. Dale disagreed with people. We all loved his hat. Yadda yadda yadda. During Rick's speech, we cut to Shane, Andrea, T-Dog, and Daryl heading out to check the security of fences around the farm and to shove a pitchfork or shovel through a walker's head. Within the first four minutes of "Better Angels" there are seven violent zombie kills, preluding the violence of this episode and surely next week's finale.

Best episode in television history
calhounharrison7 November 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I always ask myself what makes a great episode. An amazing episode should have drama, tension, great writing, amazing direction, and tremendous acting. The first time I watched The Walking Dead season 2x12 I was not sure what to expect. I knew it was setting up the finale, being the penultimate episode but I did not expect it to overshadow the finale. Better Angels follows the aftermath of Dale's death. With the group fully moved in with the Greene's Lori knows she can start over with Rick. However, before she can start over she must make amends with Shane. Lori knows she made a mistake but understands and appreciates Shane's love for her and Carl. Shane is refuses to admit it was a mistake and will not let Lori go. Shane leads Rick out into the woods to kill Shane before Rick gets the upper hand. Many characters have come and gone on The Walking Dead but none have been more beautifully executed than Shane. Many would expect this to come from the finale being how big Shane's arc has been in Season 2, but the show was gaining too much momentum to delay this moment any longer. Every character had a moment to shine this episode but Andrew Lincoln and Jon Bernthal steal the show giving the best performances of their careers. In the last 10 minutes Glenn Mazzara constructs a beautiful script that ends with two life long friends at each other's throats. Additional credit goes to Guy Ferland's brilliant direction. The tension in the open field, in the middle of the night, provides a dramatic yet terrifying backdrop to the drama. Even in the last moments of Rick and Carl unaware of the massive herd towards the farm, shows that the life they once knew is gone and our charcters will never be the same. The humanity that Andrew and Jon brought to the climatic scene convinces the audience that the life their characters fought so hard to have is just a dream in a nightmare of the a world. Even after seven years this episode still shows Hollywood grade A performances that I would rank over any show in television history.

Lori is a liabillity
nightbreed30330 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Why don't the writers do us all a favour and kill off Lori? As broken as Shane was, he never got a chance to work out his demons with the wifey- from-hell constantly messing with his head. One wonders how many more characters will die as an indirect result of her stupidity. Gotta feel for Rick, he's had to do in his friend and now looks forward to baby that might not be his being born into a zombie- infested world. At least now that Shane is gone, Rick can spend some quality time with his family... or not, since there's definitely more trouble ahead. Anyway, poor Randall, he wasn't around long and didn't have much fun at all at the funny farm. Let's hope he has a twin brother who comes looking for him...

One of the better episodes!
mm-3912 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
After watching too many shows about moral rationalizing the Rick and Shane feud comes to a head. Shane is right about the prisoner being dangerous to let got, but Shane's underhanded self preservation tactics go to far. I believe Shane underestimated Rick's compassion for weakness and pays for it. I will not ruin the plot twist, but this episode is a turning point for next season. People change through experience is Better Angels theme. The other theme is one event causes changes for another. Better Angles shows how a helicopter flying over a city and a fence breaking many miles away can cause a zombie plague for the characters on the farm many miles away. This episode is the build up for the season finale. A good episode. I give better Angels an eight out of ten.

Confused, confused, very confused.
XueHuaBingYu6 July 2019
Warning: Spoilers
After I watched this episode, I got something that I don't understand. In a condition that someone didn't get bit, then how could he turn into a zombie? I don't want to talk about Randell because whether he got bit or not, it wasn't clear. But Shane? He didn't get bit. All he got was Rick put a knife in him. How could he walk even with that wound? He's definitely dead. How did he turn into zombie without any bite? That's the question which makes me confused.

Except for that part, everything looks good. And I agree on what Rick has said. Shane's death is on nobody but Shane himself. In the other words, Shane was wrong. That wasn't Rick's fault. It was Shane's. If Shane didn't have sex with Rick's wife, Lori, everything will be okay. So, I'd say it's Shane's fault. This episode is a bit a drama but it's kind of enjoyable. One more to the end of season 2. I'm completely enjoying the show.

Better Off Dead
galahad58-112 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This episode was the one that this series needed to keep it afoot. The consistent antagonist is not needed in a show that has an antagonist already in zombies. Shane was a cancer to the group and needed to be destroyed. For the show to continue with Shane as a member of the group, they would have had to have him murder Rick, Carl, Dwayne and Hershel. Every decision by Rick and Hershel he undermined, Carl was becoming more than a whiny child and would have wanted revenge for his father's death and Dwayne would not survive knowing that a murderer was trying to lead the group. This was coming and it was about time it was done.

Shane's Demise
inefableataraxia20 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Shane have gone crazy and freed up the hostage so he could kill him and then hurt himself so he had make himself appears as the victim. Rick, Glenn and Daryl go out look for the guy. They split in two. Daryl and Glenn found out about how the hostage guy got converted in a walker and the blood on the tree, leading to Shane and Rick come up to his own conclusions but he doesn't want to fight with his friend in a battle of guns instead he waits for Shane to lower his guard to knife him out. Then Carl appears an kills a walker Shane with some wavering. Carl didn't question his father, maybe the next episode. Rick took the choice that kept him alive and along with his family. It wasn't a bad choice but it was evil just like what Shane wanted to do. This situation with walkers roaming around. It would make sense for people to lose their humanity and be near the devil.

A strong start and an even stronger end
matthewjt-9390127 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A meaningful funeral for a meaningful character kicks off the episode. Glad to see the different ranges of grief the group is experiencing following Dale's demise.

The tension in the second half building up to the final standoff between Rick and Shane was excellent and Lincoln's acting was imcredible. Only slight problem I had was the super fast reanimation of Shane, but overall probably the best episode of the season.

Best episode
cherylkyrandia4 April 2023
Honestly, Shane is one of the best characters in the Walking Dead. This episode is a testament to Bernthal's great contribution to the series. This episode dives right into the rising antagonism between Rick and Shane. It's the ultimate friendship downfall story that reaches a climax like no other. These kinds of stories are certainly more interesting that watching the writers come up with bigger and badder antagonists as the series progresses. There is a lot of gratuitous violence that transpires that ultimately means very little to the viewer without a meaningful back story. I really liked the depth this episode has.

Yet another shocker...
poe42612 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Another shocker as THE WALKING DEAD winds down its second season. That's three dramatic back to back to back episodes in a row- and the season finale is yet to come (it, too, looks like it'll be a doozy). The one thing I thought they might've overlooked was an opportunity to have a RECURRING zombie character, a la "Bub" in George Romero's DAY OF THE DEAD. While there's still a chance they could go that route, I think they missed a golden opportunity with Shane, a character some people already saw as a danger to the group. It would've been great to see him return from time to time as a tag-along zombie following his old friends throughout this Grave New World. (A footnote: When I submitted my DAY OF THE DEAD script to George Romero in late 1978/early 1979, there was just such a zombie character in it: I called him Lazarus, and he successfully led the zombies in a war against a group of National Guardsmen.)

A Great Halloween Vibe Here.
devinpbuffington1 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I don't mean the movie, I meant the general vibe of the way this episode plays out. Betrayal, Foggy Nights, Lots of Blood, Zombie action, etc make this a great watch for autumn months.

We finally have it, the ending of Rick Vs Shane, and Rick comes out the other side as victor. No more fighting over Lori or Carl or the unborn baby. TWD manages to really nail in where it wants to be at this point with this episode. A clear parallel with the comics, and a sad send off to one of the best villains in TV at the time.

Daryl and Rick dig a bit deeper into their friendship element here with some back and forth banter alongside a potential first mission together (which gets de-railed by Shane's actions), but it's really cool to see where the foundation of their friendship took root and not have it be off screen.

Now just what to do about that horde?

JUST WOW
samuelwozniel29 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This episode starts off pretty slowly, maybe boring to someone but ends in the best way possible Shane's problem and instability can be seen at they're peak in this episode, the only thing that was keeping him calm was Lori, the girl she obsessed with and got him killed, makes him mad by telling him the insicurities of who's baby it is, and being mad and instable he goes on too take Randal to the woods, and out of rage, but planified solidly, coldly kills him, he then hits his head against a tree purposely to make it seem like Randall beat him and escaped, so he then returns to daryl and the rest telling his story, they divide to search him.

Daryl and t-dog find him and comprehend that it was all made up, Shane than tries to kill Rick and that scene is just wow, the ending shot of the horde was good too.
