One of the oddest films I've ever seen.
Sleepin_Dragon28 February 2024
A group of people, all with an intense fear of flying, attend a course, and when they finally end up in the air, their flight goes wrong, and they get marooned in Iceland.

It's bizarre, I have no other word to describe this film, it is just utterly weird and zany. I thought it was going to be so much better.

I honestly can't say I disliked it, that wouldn't be fair, but I definitely wouldn't want to sit through it again. Billed as a comedy, but very thin on laughs, but definitely an interesting character study.

It takes some seriously weird turns, the whole Alfonso situation was so bizarre, but did give us the film's funniest sequence. For me, Edward was the most interesting character, sadly his backstory just wasn't developed enough.

One thing it did, was make me want to visit Iceland, it looks sublime.

Timothy Spall stood out, but then he always does.

Quirky, disappointing, but bizarrely watchable.

6/10.

Very silly, had me chuckling proper
soelir21 February 2024
I've no idea why this has such a low rating. I thought it was really funny and just the right side of bonkers!

I only watched it because it was listed under 'deadly disasters' on Netflix, even though the blurb didn't seem to match that description. So, I presume people expecting an actual disaster movie would be disappointed. I guessed it was probably more of a comedy and was pleasantly surprised that it was so good.

It's definitely worth an evening's watch on the sofa, especially if you fancy something light and a bit silly.

And hats off to the lead for all that running about in the freezing cold!

A light-hearted and terrifying comedy
LetsReviewThat2625 February 2024
Northern comfort was a comedy that much is true but I think for the most part of was a drama. Just with little sprinkles of comedic moments here and there. This movie follows a group of four people who are terrified of flying, so they take a course but when they get there a man named Charles is taking them instead and they end up all getting stuck in iceland, where they deal with love. Hate, finding themselves and losing their minds as each attempt to get home. I'm happy that spall was in this great actor and his character was the fun one out the bunch. I think overall this film was still good for what it is.

A Missed Opportunity
odogjenkins-6499316 February 2024
This film really missed the mark for me. It's rare to find anything with Tim Spall in that disappoints, but this did fall into that category. I had high hopes despite the fairly average rating, as I felt that this had good ingredients, but unfortunately, they were deployed badly.

I am usually keen on anything involving aviation, mystery, or wonderful landscapes, but I wasn't engaged with this at all. None of the characters were believable as they were so riddled with contradictions and were never properly developed. The few moments of comedy were absurd rather than clever and, despite mostly decent acting performances, the script failed to properly explain or explore anything to give the viewer something to invest in.

The pacing of the film felt all wrong for a comedy and equally wrong for a credible drama, so for me, it didn't really deliver on any level. A real shame given what could have been done with this,

Its definately not a comedy movie, this movie is a HUGE SCAM, shouldnt be in the cinema at all!

70% of the people that were watching it in the cinema with me just left in the middle, really. Such a cringe and boring movie... If i could rate it 0, I would do that.

Wish i could get my money back :/

Bad copycat of Ostlund movies
sofigambi1 February 2024
I was very excited about this movie, to finally be very disappointed. There seems to be no structure, random things happen all the time and the humour is cringe. Very mediocre acting, bad lines, and honestly, I feel like Ruben Ostlund could do a copyright claim on this. Vivaldi's four seasons with snow shots, a random drone pov shot in a hotel room, literally copied from Force Majeure. And stealing the idea of his future movie, about a flight going wrong? Ridiculous. Also some very unrealistic scenarios in it, which do not make sense. Barely any character development. Bad movie, not funny but lame. Not worth it.

The ending..?
camlord-0012425 February 2024
You can read all the reviews to get a cross section of responses.

I for one just enjoyed the presence of favourites from other comedies. I had time to wonder if the exterior shots of that Hotel has been used in half a dozen "end of the world" films and TV shows.

I also had time to wonder how actors feel when they know what they are working on will be a failure.

I also had time to wonder if the film makers realise that Vivaldi's 4 Seasons (free to use) has recently been used in so many recent....

However. Wait for the end.

Who agrees? They all died.

THAT is the point of the film! They had good reasons to have a fear of flying.

Heart-cooling anticomedy
Bobalopacus27 February 2024
Some films are heart-warming and life-affirming, Northern Comfort isn't either, nor is it a comedy, in the sense that I didn't laugh at all whilst watching it.

I can sense what the creators were aiming at, an offbeat stab at the anxieties, atomisation and general perversity and shallowness of modern life, centred around fear of flying but attempting to tackle some deeper issues. It may have worked better as a straight up drama, or with the insertion of some actual jokes - an effective satire.

Timothy Spall is usually decent and he isn't bad here, just underused. The cinematography is fine and the central performance of Lydia Leonard is rather good.

None of the characters really connect with one another (which might be intentional) and there is a sense of loneliness pervading the whole thing, enhanced by the cold and harsh Icelandic environment. The plot takes some turns into weird territory, but not really weird enough to make a real statement. There were opportunities for some physical comedy, but these were overlooked (perhaps, the makers felt actual humour would be too crass?).

'Jokes' revolve around random men showing pics of their genitals as a seduction attempt; a random hook-up between two men which might be a desperate career move, a coming out revelation or both; a social media 'influencer' who describes her career as 'travelling the world and taking pictures of my bum' and a taxi driver driving whilst drunk. Oh, and one of the characters has a silly haircut.

If any of that sounds promising to you then maybe this will appeal.

As a final side note, I wonder whether this is the type of slightly disturbing and dissatisfying product that AI, raised entirely on a diet of social media and the internet, will create in the future?

It's not funny, it's boring
askgutmagic13 February 2024
I lasted 45.minutes. And then I had to stop. This film has no real plot, it has no humour, it has no purpose. I don't get it. I sat stoney faced for the first 30 minutes waiting for a laugh but I never came. The one character vomited on another which made me chuckle. And then the boredom came back in waves.

Comedy is very subjective but with a script as bad as this. The plot and characters are so thin that nothing will save the film from a lack of laughter. I have no idea what made Tim Spall sign up for this horror show of a film.

Please don't believe the absurd reviews giving this film 10/10. There is no enjoyment to be had here. This is so painfully dull and bereft of purpose. AVOID.

Excellent surprice
bsteing10 October 2023
A plesent surprice. The movie was much better than i expected. The cast was very good and each actor excellent. The movie was funy and if you like a good comedy this movie is not going to dissapoint. A good comedy is a rarity and this movie deffenitelly deserves a good review and a success. I hope it will get a good distribution so people around the world will be able to enjoy it as I did. Northern Comfort is a movie deffenitelly worth seeing and people who like comedy should not miss it. The movie was one of the nicest movie surprice i have enjoyed and worth seeing even two times if possible.

Had the premise but not the script
Iheartfilm2011418 February 2024
Normally love any thing Timothy Spall is in but this was disappointing. Started out with great premise then was just silly and predictable. It couldn't work out if was to be a comedy or more serious drama. None of the characters were that likeable and when they do flights for those with a fear of flying they just take off, fly around for under an hour and land at the airport they took off from. Story too unbelievable and by the end I didn't care what happened to all of them.

The parter the main character was with wasn't a nice person and you got annoyed that she wouldn't own up and admit she was still scared of flying which was basically the whole of the storyline.

Not comedy, not anything else
cryssstal884 March 2024
Do you think we find it funny when people keep having bad luck and thats enough to call it a comedy? There was not one funny scene or one funny actor. I am not sure why you call this comefy or why you made this movie at all. Such a waste of time. I kept waiting for the funny part and it never came. Actually I did not even smile throughout whole movie. I find it hard to believe some people fibd tjis funny and gave it 5 stars but then I remember people use all kinds of psychoactive substances so that must be an explanation. First comedies turned into romance and then into nothing!!! Do not waste time watching this.

Different, Not Necessarily In A Good Way
deepfrieddodo12 April 2024
Northern Comfort is certainly different. It's a novel plot with an opportunity for it's characters to be endearing, but instead follows individual arcs where none of them are particularly likeable.

A small group of people with a fear of flying undertake a course to overcome their phobia. Through a series of unfortunate circumstances, they find themselves marooned in Iceland. Whilst the the plot does get going, for a relatively short film it doesn't fly by at all.

It's quirky, but fails to capture enough attention to be able to recall the names of the characters. The comedy is weak, provided through the unconventional or deadpan. Some beautiful scenery is showcased, but you could watch an advert from the Icelandic tourism board for that.

Bizarre, looks like makers have used some hard drugs
veronikateschen28 March 2024
I definitely see the attempt for a good comedy movie, but it turned out completely wrong. I think the plot was supposed to be different. Edward's role was great and he should be the actual main character and leader of the expedition. But instead of course for people with fear of flying it should have been about someone who was kidnapped as a little kid from their home, forced to live with fake family, lied to by everyone around, who happened to get serious neurological illness, that no one could ever treat and Edward trying to pretend that he's trying to do something for that person and maybe one day return them home, but instead ending up constantly teaching the person crucial life lessons that no one ever asked for. I don't think flying should be ever mentioned. There should be also featured frequent nuclear attack alarm, which would finally be true at the end. It should also be clear that the person is always just playing the victim. It could also picture crowd of many rich people who have nothing important to do but to make constantly fun from someone who's sick and being mistreated. Not much has changed since the Middle Ages.

They really blew it
Darkbulb1 April 2024
I mean, the premise is ok, the actors are in many cases great, the cinematography is not bad....but....it's just such a boring, pointless mess!

I had some hopes for this when I saw the list of actors...but holy cow, this was SUCH a bad movie.

I'd avoid it at all cost - spend your precious time doing something else.

Ugh.

Hilarious!
harmatib27 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Laughed my head off really. Unpredictable, witty, funny. Without any clichés. So refreshing in the sea of boring industrialized "entertaining" movies.

All the characters are very human, totally real with vices we can easily share with them. In the middle of it I understood why one can be so scared of flying.

There are such turns which I could not have possibly foreseen, therefore I was many times shocked in a very pleasant way.

The leading lady was just superb, I did not doubt her animal fear of flying for a second. The character of the writer was unmatched in his seriousness as a military man. The influencer lady was sweetly and innocently revolting.

I only can recommend this freshly funny movie, pure art, pure joy, far avoiding the long tradition of dumb & boring comedies.
