The Brave Little Tailor
TheLittleSongbird13 March 2020
Have voiced a good deal of appreciation for this series. It is a long way from perfect, with some elements done inconsistently and there are episodes that are weaker than others, but for anybody wanting to see accessible adaptations of the work of the iconic Brothers Grimm (which includes long-term favourites and less familiar stories) regardless of fidelity or not or get acquainted with them should definitely see it. Especially if they like anime.

'The Brave Little Tailor' is not among my all-time favourites but it is a charming story with a likeable titular character. This 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater'/'Grimm Fairy Tale Classics' episode, from towards the end of the second season, adapts it very nicely. It is very accessible for younger audiences (appropriate as it is a long way from being one of the series' darkest), one of the more family-friendly episodes without dumbing it down too much, but older audiences also shouldn't dislike it too much. If it and the series doesn't do it for you, that's fine.

Like some of the series' episodes, the animation is not particularly great. Nice backgrounds but the lack of smoothness is present in the drawings and character designs, which also look pretty derivative of some of the series' previous episodes.

Also didn't care that much for the music apart from the intro, which didn't really fit, sounded over-scored and the very late-80s sound and style dates things a bit. Synchronisation doesn't always work, with the lip synching (sloppy) and dialogue (spoken a bit too on the fast side, or tending to) never really in sync with each other.

On the other hand, the voice acting is pretty good. The narrator has always fared best, with a soothing quality, and the tailor is also amiably voiced with the voice fitting the character. Just like the tailor being a likeable character that lives up to the story's title. The other characters are not quite as interesting but none irritate and none are really non-descript.

Dialogue is neither too simplistic or too complicated, so a good balance there, while the story goes at a nice pace and charms with elements that are recognisable. It's all easy to understand without going too far on that that it feels dumbed down.

In summation, nicely done. 7/10
