Interesting change of pace

"Mystery Solvers Club State Finals" was actually one of the 'Scooby Doo: Mystery Incorporated' episodes seen a lot later (didn't see the show in order of airing). This reviewer found it absolutely great on first watch, finding it clever and refreshingly different while still being unmistakably Scooby Doo. As well as highly atmospheric. There are plenty of 'Mystery Incorporated' episodes that were every bit as great on rewatch and in some cases even better, due to finding more to appreciate.

One of those episodes is "Mystery Solvers Club State Finals", both in that it was every bit as great as the first time and also managed to be even better. Not only because of the numerous good things coming over as even higher in quality, but there were things picked up on that were not noticed first time (with not as much familiarity with the other mystery club candidates). For me, "Mystery Solvers Club State Finals" is up there with the best episodes of Season 1. It is also a crossover, with the gang meeting other lesser known Hanna Barbera, and of the franchise's numerous crossover episodes, this is among the best, most imaginative and refreshing of them.

Absolutely loved that it diverted from the usual formula, not just of 'Mystery Incorporated' but of the franchise in general, with a very dream-like (or more like nightmare-like) atmosphere. Also great was the visual style, that was like going back to the old Scooby Doo (traditional Hanna Barbera also in general with the mystery club characters) animation style except with a good deal more ambition and refinement. The look of the villain especially stands out.

The story is hugely compelling, with enough turns to satisfy and a lot of energy and atmosphere. The final solution was another big surprise, with the character responsible not even being considered a suspect. 'Mystery Incorporated' really delivered on some very surprising reveals in the way that few of the previous Scooby Doo shows did. There is quite a lot of suspense, even though structurally the episode is quite slight. The music has a lot of character and atmosphere and the theme tune is memorable.

Writing is smart, thought provoking and funny. Loved that the episode focused on Scooby where he was the main character, while the mystery solving candidates are great fun and faithful to their older personas. The villain is another genuinely creepy one with a very imaginative character design that is the stuff of nightmares. Didn't like how underused the rest of the gang was, but did love how caring they were towards Scooby. The voice acting is on point.

In summary, great and a very successful attempt at a change of pace. A case of different done excellently. 9/10.

An excellent throwback for hardcore Scooby fans.

In a dream sequence episode, Scooby manages to have a side plot that is creative and engaging. Much like a few other Mystery Incorporated episodes, this references old Scooby episodes that hardcore fans can appreciate (specifically the Wacky Racers series). There are tons of small changes to the Mystery Incorporated formula: a slightly different animation style is the most prominent. Even for fans not familiar with Captain Caveman or Jabberjaw, this manages to be a fun watch.

Mystery Solvers Club State Finals

Warning: Spoilers
Great. Nice even. This is the type of episode that will bring memories flooding of previous Hanna Barbera characters.

Fred is distraught that he will not be able to attend the Mystery Solvers Club State Finals, a meeting of other crime solving teams.

This is because Scooby Doo has a fever but he makes a sudden miraculously recovery.

The gang manage to attend the finals after all. Scooby meets the other mascots such as Jabberjaw, the Funky Phantom, Speed Buggy and the one and only Captain Caveman.

Soon a fiery skeleton headed ghost named Lord Infernicus shows up and kidnaps everyone except the mascots.

It is left to the sidekicks to look for clues solve the mystery. They need to find all the meddling kids.

This is a bit of a fun, frivolous throwback episode. The sidekicks come across a surprise culprit. Heavens to Murgatroyd.
