Media stocks popped Thursday, well outperforming the broader market, after news that the months longs SAG-AFTRA strike has been settled, with the actors guild and the AMPTP announcing a agreement Wednesday night. Halted productions can soon look to restart, the theatrical release calendar can stop shifting and the industry begin to get back to normal after a tough summer and fall.
There were gains across entertainment shares with Warner Bros. Discovery up more than 3% at $9.70 after a major selloff yesterday — when it fell 19% — on a soft advertising outlook delivered its third quarter earnings.
Disney is up nearly 6% at about $8.90 just after the open. It closed down slightly (off 0.11%) Wednesday ahead of earnings that were generally well received by Wall Street. Exclusive: Bob Iger finally had his wish come true Wednesday.
“I’m elated,” the Disney CEO told Deadline tonight in his reaction to the deal between SAG-AFTRA and the studios.
“It’s been, as you know, a long summer in this town and it’s an industry that really needs to get back to work and wants to get back to work,” Iger added at the Wish premiere in Hollywood, just hours after the tentative agreement with the guild was made public. “I’m gonna be one of those people that’s just cheering the return to production in this community.”
Iger’s remarks late tonight come after a long 24 hours for the exec, the guild and the industry.
The 118th day of the strike, Wednesday saw hopes dashed for a Tuesday night deal, a rough-ish Q3 earnings result for Disney, worries about 2024 and the AMPTP putting SAG-AFTRA on notice.

Hollywood is at a crossroads and the 160,000 actors that make up SAG-AFTRA are seemingly in the driver’s seat.
Will there be an actors strike, on top of the writers strike, which is in its ninth week? What happens if there are two strikes? Will SAG-AFTRA extend its negotiations with the studios and then strike? Or will they extend and strike a deal? Would an actors strike compound the pain across the entertainment industry that is already reeling from the writers strike?
Deadline revealed Wednesday that SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are considering extending negotiations until next week (July 7) or later. This also would make sense given that most of Hollywood will be out of town for a long holiday weekend.
In addition to these questions, there are dozens of rumors flying around on the picket lines and Beverly Hills lunch spots. There’s talk...

SAG-AFTRA’s negotiations for a new contract are making headway “in some areas” but not in others, Fran Drescher, the guild’s president, said in an interview today on ABC’s Good Morning America.
“We do have unprecedented support from the union members where, if we feel like we’re not making headway when the contract expires, which is June 30th at 11:59 p.m. [Pt], we’re gonna have to strike,” she said. (Watch the interview below.)
“Are you making headway?” asked host Michael Strahan.
“You know, in some areas we are, and in some areas we’re not. So we just have to see. I mean, in earnest, it would be great if we can walk away with a deal that we want. And at the end of the day, you know, we’re living in a time that’s very different from the last few decades when the...

Cinema audiences in Middle East, and especially the Gulf, are growing and set to get bigger in coming years, leading distributers in the region told delegates at the International ShowBiz Expo in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
“The market has mushroomed since the early 2000s and continues to grow,” Mario Haddad, CEO of pan-Arab distributor Empire International and Empire Gulf told the conference.
“Of course, it’s difficult in some territories due to current events but you might be surprised to learn that there is a cinema open in Damascus and still some business in Iraq,” he added.
Gulf Film CEO Selim El-Azar, who was also on the panel, noted that his company had released Fury in Damascus’ one remaining cinema this week.

Islamabad, Oct 21: Pakistani bilingual film "Waar" has created a record by earning Rs.40 million in three days during Eid festival. The Shaan starrer action-thriller is said to have the highest box office collection till date.
Akshay Kumar-starrer Bollywood film "Boss", according to the entertainment circles, played second fiddle to "Waar", by earning Rs.10 million only, reported the Dawn newspaper.
It was perhaps the first Eid after many years when a Pakistani movie was having packed three shows. In certain cinemas, even the fourth show - from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. - was dedicated to "Waar".
The movie has been released with 35 prints across the country. Written by Hasan Waqas Rana, it is the directorial debut of.

Karachi, Oct er 9: Shaan Shahid's upcoming film Waar's release is going to coincide with Akshay Kumar's 'Boss', as both the films will release around Eidul Azha.
Boss has been advertised for a local release with subject to censors while distributors of Waar are aiming to capture around 50 screens in Pakistan, the Express Tribune reported.
This Eid would portray the true potential of a big-budget Pakistani film in presence of a genuine competitor, if 'Boss' is not forced into a delay or a possible ban by committees to "protect the national interest".
Waar is expected to do better business at the local box office, if both the film end up being released together, whereas, 'Boss' will only be able to steal a minor share.

The least likely market you'd expect to produce a big-budget action pic is Pakistan. Okay, so maybe that's not the least likely, but it's up there. However, director Bilal Lashari has been putting together his film Waar for a few years now and after a delay in release the film seems to finally be moving forward. The English/Pakistani language film looks to be the level of a Jason Bourne political thriller mixed with some contemporary settings. Mostly, I'm just amazed at the production level...

Moribund industry makes song and dance about violent thriller billed as most anticipated movie in country's history
It claims to not only be the most anticipated film in the history of Pakistan, but to be based on true events. And, for once, the Hollywood-style hyperbole can be excused. The feature-length action thriller called Waar ("to strike" in Urdu) is eagerly awaited, despite being out of tune with the trend for movies packed with singing and dancing.
Waar is coming to cinemas in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi and even the restive frontier city of Peshawar later this year. The trailer was viewed more than 500,000 times in the first month when posted on YouTube in January, entering the website's top five videos.
Inspired by real events such as a Muslim extremist assault on a Pakistani police academy in 2009, the film follows a team of anti-terrorist police officers who, with time running out, try to stop a new attack.
