- The third season of RuPaul's Drag Race (2009) begins with the introduction of twelve new drag queens, ready to compete to become America's Next Drag Superstar. After the queens have entered the work room, a surprise thirteenth contestant is revealed to be the first eliminated queen from the previous season, Shangela (D.J. 'Shangela' Pierce).
RuPaul then gives the girls their first mini challenge of the season; a Christmas themed photo shoot where they are tasked with taking a pretty photo whilst on a trampoline. Their photographer is seasoned photographer, Mike Ruiz. The winner of the photo shoot is Raja (Sutan Amrull), who is rewarded with an extra $25 to spend in the maxi challenge. Then it's on to their first maxi challenge. The queens are sent to a thrift store with a budget to pick up items to create a holiday-themed outfit.
Joining RuPaul are regular guest judges, Santino Rice and, making her debut appearance, Michelle Visage. Appearing as special guest judges are Mike Ruiz, Vanessa Williams and Bruce Vilanch. Raja also wins the first maxi challenge and is given immunity from next week's elimination and a $2,000 gift card to Sequin Queen. Venus D-Lite (Adam Guerra) and Shangela end up in the bottom two and are asked to Lip Sync for Your Life.
The girls perform to Vanessa Williams' 'The Right Stuff'. The queens begin lip syncing with Venus becoming more aggressive throughout, at one point taking her wig off and throwing it at the queens at the back of the stage. Shangela's outfit also begins falling apart. When the song finishes, RuPaul mentions their performance was at some points uncomfortable to watch. Shangela ultimately wins the lip sync whilst Venus is asked to sashay away.
