The Diplomat has always had some strong elements of The Crown associated with it and we got that in spades here as not only was the majority of the episode confined to one area, but mostly confined to one table tonight.

We saw political discussions and abrasiveness and backstabbing and more on display here. This episode really dove deep on the impact of issues with Russia and the repercussions, something you don't always hear about when it comes to the mainstream media. In the end Kate Wyler made a very neocon move, although you have to wonder if this is a setup (I tend to think that it definitely is).

As the people in the know try their best to find diplomatic responses to the attack on the ship, the Prime Minister comes steaming up on a sports car. He is concerned that he will be seen as "weak," although a cat-like reference is used instead. As avenues are presented, he rejects them. He wants them to figure out a way to get back at Russia, whom he believes is behind the whole thing, not Iran. He counters every effort with a childish tirade and then demands more from them. Eventually Kate has had enough and puts it back in his lap. Very well done. The reason for dropping this a couple points is the continuing focus on the marriage, which is a caesura of boredom in the middle of really interesting politics.

Warning: Spoilers
I'm puzzled as to why in this episode they would add a bizarre sex scene with Hal and the sister of the Foreign Secretary? The show has excellent acting, dialogue, writing and contemporary presence. It bears little resemblance to real life diplomacy, but our belief systems can be suspended in pursuit of entertainment. So it was jarring and unbelievable to see a former high level ambassador throwing all caution to the wind for a very odd "sex/not sex" scene with a troubled young woman. At this point I'll continue watching but my "BS" meter is on alert for scenes and episodes that just can't be believed even in a series as well done as this one.
