Due to her being shorter than the real life 5'4" height requirement that the actual Pan Am stewardesses had to be in that era, Christina Ricci was forced to wear high heels while her co-stars wore shorter "kitten" heeled shoes.
Despite all the exotic destinations featured on the show, principal shooting is done on a back lot in Brooklyn, and other shots are done around New York City. (For example, London hotel scenes are shot in a mansion on Long Island, and some scenes in Italy have been shot in Manhattan.)
The average career for a Pan Am Stewardess in the 1960's averaged around 18 months due to the strict weight, age, marital status and childlessness requirements. Pan Am required its stewardesses to be at least five foot two and weigh no more than 130 pounds. They also couldn't be married or have children. On top of that the mandatory retirement age for flight attendants was 32. At 5'1", Christina Ricci would have been too short to have been accepted, and at 31, would only have had a few months as a stewardess until she would have hit the mandatory retirement age.
New York footage shows the Pan Am Worldport, a unique circular terminal with a "flying saucer" roof to cover the planes as they arrived at the terminal. It was constructed in 1960. In 2013, a year after production ended, the terminal was destroyed. It was in use by Pan Am and later Delta for exactly 53 years to the day.
Despite playing their mother on the show Kate Jennings Grant is actually 14 years older then Kelli Garner and 20 years older then Margot Robbie who play her on screen daughters Laura and Kate Cameron, two of the of the stewardesses on the show.
