Comic Bill Burr got into a little controversy for making a joke about how White women had leapt into the front of the line (in their Gucci shoes, if I remember correctly) ahead of racial minorities in the current discussions about rampant racial bigotry in this country and stealing the focus away. His point was there are centuries-old legacies of racial bigotry we've tried to ignore, and just when we're finally starting to look into the true scope of them, the attention's once again ripped away.
It was only a matter of time before SVU - a show that has often presented racial minorities in less than flattering ways except for a few here and there as representation - would do the same.
We've barely scratched the surface on hate crimes against racial minorities. If you're Asian, for example, you have to convince people you even face bigotry of any kind, let alone get someone with the kumquats to actually pursue a hate crime. We just came through a year where millions of Americans went, "What? Asians face bigotry?" despite daily reports of assaults on Asian Americans, after all.
But here comes SVU, and Burr would probably say with the White women putting their Gucci shoes over the line to make hate crimes all about them. Wonder how diverse the writing and producing staff is on SVU. Hmm . . .
Of course, someone will point out that they did a hate crime episode with racial minorities or something in 2005. Wow, I guess that evens it out.
Anyway, this is another preachy, pandering episode that thinks being pretentious is the same as being profound. Golly, I wonder what demographic they're trying to reach. Some creeps -- and in true SVU form these days, they're nothing but one-dimensional creeps -- sexually assault women on a college campus, the fictional Hudson University. Wow, Hudson University has been such a cauldron of impropriety, it's a miracle the doors are still open. There's no doubt who the guilty party is, no attempt at any dramatic nuance. This is just a pile on to give the audience a rush of simplistic feel goods the story never earns.
It's not woke. It's WOKE.
Actually, it's just obnoxious.
Oh, Dicky Wolf, Dicky Wolf.
