- Celebrated artist Caroline Valley (Emma Humphreys) is dead.
Her body was found on her remote farm, where she apparently committed suicide by drowning herself in a dam. Her Will stipulates that her considerable fortune is to be divided amongst her surviving loved ones.
Only one of them is related to her Isobel Pitcher (Rebecca Powell), the daughter she gave up for adoption twenty years ago.
When Isobel came looking for her birth mother, Caroline welcomed her. But Isobel found Carolines somewhat unusual lifestyle distasteful. The artist had surrounded herself with a collection of house guests, including Holly Dalfour (Melody Hart), her muse and most frequent model, Martin Doyle (Luke Powell), a young artist looking to learn from Caroline, and Bryce North (Daniel Fletcher), a drifter who earns his keep with manual labour. Isobel couldnt quite make out the connections between them, but their physical comfort with one another was enough to make her very uncomfortable.
When she informs Caroline she wanted nothing further to do with her, her birth mother gave her some very black news about her genetic heritage. She comes from one of only forty families in the world that carry the Fatal Familial Insomnia gene.
Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) causes the sufferer to completely lose the ability to sleep. As the condition worsens, they descend into a living nightmare of hallucination, dementia and paralysis. The disease is always fatal within a year of its onset. There is a fifty percent chance that Caroline could carry the FFI gene. And a fifty percent chance that Isobel could also.
Infuriated and deeply horrified, Isobel swears to have nothing to do with Caroline ever again. Until the day Detective Inspector Aaron Decker (Ben Talarczyk) comes to her home to inform her of Carolines suicide. She is named in her birth mothers will and stands to inherit a portion of her fortune.
But Dt. Decker isnt the only one to visit Isobel about the artists death. John Avis (Paul Quartermain), Carolines business manager, comes to Isobels house with startling news.
Shortly before her death, Avis brought Caroline a discovery. He met a research scientist in Belgium, who has discovered a treatment for FFI. All it required was the funding to provide an immediate cure. When he returned, the first symptoms of FFI had already started to come over Caroline. She had inherited the disease. And so she agreed to sign her entire fortune over to fund the Belgium treatment. But not everyone was happy for her to do so.
If Caroline were to give everything for a cure, then the ones with the most to lose were Holly Dalfour, Martin Doyle and Bryce North. What would happen to them, without Carolines wealth to support them? Avis is certain Caroline was murdered and that either Holly, Martin or Bryce or perhaps all of them - are responsible.
One way or another, Isobel is going to get to the truth.
