A disappointing sci-fi movie that fails to deliver on its premise
akcenat22 October 2023
Awareness is a sci-fi movie that tries to be clever and original, but ends up being boring and predictable. The movie follows a teenager who can alter what others perceive. The movie promises to be a thrilling and mind-bending adventure, but it falls short on every aspect.

It has a weak plot, full of clichés, inconsistencies, and logical flaws. The movie starts with a dull and confusing introduction, that does not explain anything about Ian's abilities or motivations. The movie then proceeds to drag on with pointless scenes and dialogues, that do not advance the story or develop the characters. The movie also has some ridiculous twists and revelations, that make no sense and contradict what was shown before.

It also has a mediocre cast, with poor acting and chemistry. Most of cast is bland and unconvincing even annoying or wasted and forgettable.. Almost none is having any charisma.

The movie has some terrible visual effects and cinematography, that ruin the immersion and the suspense. The film tries to create a vivid and realistic world, but uses cheap and cheesy CGI, that look fake and cartoonish. The movie also uses shaky and blurry camera work, that make the action scenes hard to follow and enjoy.

Overall, 'Awareness' is a movie that will disappoint you and make you regret wasting your time and money. It is a low-quality sci-fi movie that does not deliver on its premise.

I give it 4 out of 10 stars.

Squandered Potential
moorek28 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
I knew nothing of this movie until I saw it on Prime and decided to watch it. There are some good elements and effects to the movie but too many fall flat pulling the movie down.

It starts out fast which I like. No waiting 10-15 minutes before the story comes into play. It opens with Ian using his powers, then almost right away the pursuit. There are a number of slow moments in the film but also some good staged action pieces.

The acting is okay for the most part. The two female leads are the better actors or at least have better written characters. Pedraza as Esther is usually good and does the choreographed fight scenes well. Loren as Adriana does her best aloof Noomi Rapace imitation but it works.

There are a few elements that show the potential but they are not followed up with. The most obvious one is if Esther is truly an illusion. If you go back you see that she never interacts with Ian's father when they are together. The father never references her. Ian might have shot past her and not through her in the final battle. If she was an illusion then why did the villain have to hold his gun up and his hand holding air if it was his illusion. If she is an illusion then why was the father, injured from the car crash, sleeping on the coach while Ian had the bed. When Ester gets out of bed, clearly only one person has slept in it. But while it does look like she might be an illusion - clearly Adriana also has an illusion of her own that she talks to. This has great potential for has someone put a more "strict" loop in Adriana's head and why?

Like many movies from Europe, the different locations, cars, houses etc add to the movie as it provides images that are not overused.

The movie falls down through some terrible editing and unexplained plot points such as:

*If Esther is an illusion set in Ian's mind at the arcade then why not make it sympathetic to the villain from the start.

*The father seemed so sincere at keeping Ian safe over all those years so why did he drink so much? Talk about lowering your guard much of the time. I know alcoholism is a disease but in a case like this when you have to hide - you'd think you'd give it up.

*And where do they get their money to live? He won't do anything to draw attention to themselves but live on an abandoned ship. That's never going to raise any flags. And they've done good for themselves as he apparently has at least three monitors with his computer equipment.

*Why didn't Adriana shoot the villain instead of shooting an innocent bystanders who is under the control of the villain in the final battle? The villain had no value any more..

*There's some odd editing. A) At one point Esther and Ian are talking about some scientist and we see a flashback of them getting some information but that was not in the movie. Must have been filmed but deleted. B) Adriana sends in her team to capture them while at the old facility yet suddenly shows up at the boat to talk to the father. This piece of the film moves NOTHING alone. C) Ian goes after Esther after the final battle and the death of his father and then suddenly we are in the midst of some formal party.

Overall I still enjoyed it and it did set itself up for a good sequel which I will watch for.

Who do you root for?
okpilak13 December 2023
The concept is interesting, but the execution is confusing. It really comes down to whom do you root for? During WWII, there was a secret program to create people who could make other people see things that are not there, and also control them. After the war, those people were no longer needed, so there was an extermination campaign, but some escaped. So there seems to be two sides, but neither side seems totally good nor totally bad and who is really right? We meet early on Ian and his father. Ian can make people see things that are not there, so that is ideal to pull off petty crimes to get things without getting caught. And Ian's father wants to keep things low level, as he knows there are those hunting for Ian, so don't draw attention. But Ian wants to live a normal life, and soon gets discovered. So both sides are after him. There are some well choreographed fight scenes, some with a high body count. But things get confusing, who do you trust, and besides, few of the characters are difficult to care about. And that is the real flaw.

BE READY TO PULL THE PLUG BECAUSE ITS DULL AS DISHWATER!
silicontourist18 October 2023
Once again yet another film that explains nothing to you as in subject matter or character background information, On top of that there is nobody you give a real damn about so, I found myself not caring what happened to anyone in the film. Both parties that are vying for control of the films main character are totally untrustworthy and very dislike-able and, the main character himself is just your typical youth, unthinking, rash and a petulant dipstick.

I think the directing of this film left a lot to be desired and the story (though a fairly good idea) just rambled about in an non thrilling meander. The only thing that was well presented, choreographed and enacted were the action/fight scenes.

This may have been a far more interesting film had a talent like Guillermo del Toro had been the director.

A very fun action flick with good sci-fi trappings.
madbrooks17 October 2023
This Spanish-American science-fiction action flick owes a lot to Stephen King's book Firestarter, with its shadowy government agency creating people with psychic powers, but it also has elements of Inception, Scanners, The Fury and The Matrix to flesh things out, so yeah, this isn't the most original movie out there but the script constantly keeps you guessing as it layers double-crosses on top of alternate realities and implanted memories so that it hardly matters what's actually going on, it's just a lot of fun.

Overall, Daniel Benmayor's Awareness is a frenetically fun espionage thriller with science fiction trappings and some really well-choreographed action sequences that make this film an easy one to recommend.

Great Premises But Ultimately Fails
Scotslad_00712 November 2023
Awareness is a great idea and starts with a brilliant premises but diminishes as it unfolds. The story starts with a young boy protected by a father figure barely making it and stealing alcohol of all things. The father figure ultimately is drunk who they attempt to make us feel compassion for but did little to earn the title an actual father figure.

The most frustrating part of this movie is its potential, such a great idea wasted. The main character, Ian, we learn has an ability to alter perception and it attempting to evade an organization which is tracking him for this gift. Initially you have compassion for Ian but ultimately I found myself giving up on him as he comes across as a spoiled brat.

This is a movie of potential but ends with making bad choices and asking yourself, what was the point of the story? Seem the bad guys triumphed and the idiot kid who can project ideas into others was duped.

Truly bad, in an epic way
imdb-2382125 November 2023
Very high production value and budget for something this bad. You've seen every cliche before and you can guess them well in advance. In short, one of the most powerful mind screwer but he's just gunning for short cash robberies with his Dad as a small time outlaw. Makes no sense, and the script tries to sell our protagonist as a simple fish out of water. The "perceiver" is a dude in 70s glasses who makes a visible effort to have a brooding angry mug on his face, to the point where you wonder whether this really is a parody.

The acting is generally stilted and not very good. Part of it is just the terrible dialog. This may have been an Amazon production, which explains the money behind it and the generic paint by numbers script where it's clear that it's all about putting some 'cool scifi concept' on screen and the characters themselves are props. No background on any of them because the audience doesn't have to care. It's all about unlocking this mystery which is... in Warsaw. Why? Because obviously a production budget goes way further in Eastern Europe.

There is a scene where our hero is caught by a character and an encounter ensuses. Like the rest of this film, it makes little sense. And at that point, about halfway through, I was about ready to call it quits until I remembered I could just jump ahead... So...

On the bright side, going straight to video allows you to quickly skip ahead, if you actually care about what happens.

Enjoyable, action-packed sci-fi
Tweekums17 January 2024
In this Spanish sci-fi film Ian is a teenager with a strange power; he can create mental illusions that others perceive as reality, at least while he is influencing them. With his father he uses it for low level scams. Anything too big would attract the wrong kind of attention. Inevitably this ultimately happens and Ian is about to learn that he isn't the only one with such powers. Captured by a shadowy agency he is told that he is needed to protect against others like him who abuse the powers on a large scale; in particular a dangerous individual known as 'The Mule'. Following an escape others tell him that it is the agency that is the real danger... who is he to believe? Given their powers can he even believe the evidence of his own eyes?

I thought this was an enjoyably sci-fi film. Not surprisingly there are plenty of twists and turns before the end. I liked how these kept the viewer guessing as to which, if either, side could be considered the good side. There is a good amount of action which features fairly solid special effects. The cast does a solid job. Inevitably one is likely to be reminded of other films while watching; such as 'Hanna', 'Inception' and 'The Matrix'... even though this isn't too like any of them. The most obvious nod is to the 'Foundation' series by Isaac Asimov with a character with telepathic powers known as The Mule. Overall an enjoyable sci-fi with good amount of action; I'd recommend giving it a go.

These comments are based on watching the film in Spanish with English subtitles.

Wow! Finally a great Sci-fi I knew nothing about...
froneyzone-707851 November 2023
It's been a while since I've been blown-away from a Sci-fi movie, esp a foreign one, on a streaming platform, that I just randomly picked. This has Jumper qualities that should've been a big Hollywood release as well because it is so much better! So I'm sure since that wasn't the case it was a bit shorter than what it could've been and left unanswered plot hole questions but i would assume too that was in order to leave plenty of room for a sequel and/or even a trilogy which i sure hope happens! It may seem a bit slow at first but once it gets going it doesn't stop. The twists & turns are great!!! I was left guessing who was what and to whom until the very end all while enjoying The Matrix like action. I'm glad Amazon Studios picked it up and can support the other 2 sequels esp since it seems like we are not getting a 2nd season of The Peripheral due to the strikes which is sad but this movie also had similar suspense to that show as well. This movie is one that should eventually be placed on a Top 20 list for sure.

"AWARENESS" REVIEW
Mr-Topshotta26 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Directed and co-written by Daniel Benmayor. A runtime of one hour and fifty-two minutes. Streaming on Prime Video.

"Ian" played by Carlos Scholz lives with his dad "Vincente" played by Pedro Alonso in hiding. They live a modest life. All because of "Ian" unique powers. He can conjure visual illusions out of thin air. Which they use only for necessities.

"Ian" is growing restless of this modest life. He rather really let loose and do a big score. "Ian" can do much more with his powers, even more than he even realizes.

But there is a reason why "Vincente" doesn't want "Ian" to use his powers. "Adriana" played by Lela Loren and the company she works for wants "Ian". Along with a "Perceptor" played by Óscar Jaenada. Who has the same powers as him but is way stronger than him.

"Vincente" fear becomes a reality and "Ian" world will turn upside down. He will get paired with an unlikely ally "Esther" played by María Pedraza to go on a quest to figure out questions he's been wondering about his whole life. While getting presented with new questions he must find out the answers to them. We don't know who is an ally or foe but "Ian" knows he has to see this to the end. In this action thriller.

"Awareness" reminded me of the film "Gray Matter". Very similar plot to the T. Another Diet X-Men film. It's funny because once again I didn't know it was a foreign dubbed Film. That's one of my new favorite things to do when I watch a streaming film. I try to guess what country the film originated from or for. I look at context clues. Seeing the extras or the cars in the background.

It was the police car that led me to realize it was originally a foreign film. Because the actors didn't seem foreign. Then it had my girl Lela Loren in it. She played the character "Angie" in the popular Starz TV series "Power". It was good seeing her again. Seeing her threw me off. But then I remembered she also spoke Spanish. That's how I pieced together that it was originally a Spanish film.

Anyway, I'm going on a tangent. The film was a decent streaming film. On top of that one of the better foreign films I've seen. The plot was copied and paste a bit. With some holes in the script. But a decent action thriller. I give it three mor fires 🔥🔥🔥.

It's worth a watch.
mluinstra13 February 2024
Welcome to the other side. I didn't know anything about this movie but the basic description I read, made it sound like a sci-fi movie I would like.

You can tell right away that the movie wasn't going to win any awards, and you could tell that it didn't have a ton of money invested in it, but it had a very cool concept. The kid has the ability to make people see what he wants them to. He basically creates illusions that others people see.

The kid and his father figure partner decide to use this awesome ability to steal booze from a liquor store, but the kid loses concentration or something and the illusion dissolves before they get to far, and they have to run.

If I had this gift, I wouldn't be stealing booze, I'd be heading to Vegas or heading to a bank to cash this certified cheque for 10 million, etc.

Anyways, the movie was good enough to keep me watching, but it could have been so much better. It's been a week or so since I watched it, and I don't remember much about it. The evil company sent a "perceiver" after the kid, who is basically a guy that has the same ability as the kid, but is way more experienced at using his gifts than the kid. He kind of acts like the Terminator.

So to sum this up, the movie was just okay. They had a great idea, but they didn't do much with it. I just don't understand what's up with writers these days, but they all seem just terrible. Even when they are asked to do a remake of a movie, so they have the original movie to draw ideas from, they still create a shyt script.

It's definitely worth watching once though.

The other users' ratings are very strict.
maxoura-959-74484013 January 2024
I understand that people have different preferences and standards for quality, but it's important to consider the kind of expectations you have when watching a movie.

This film offers a decent experience with a script that includes some unexpected twists, but it might not live up to everyone's standards. The production values are good, with nice effects and direction. The lead actor does a fine job, contributing to a narrative that's engaging enough for a casual watch. It's important to set appropriate expectations; if you're hoping for a groundbreaking sci-fi epic, this might not be it. Overall, it's a fair movie, worthy of about a 6.5/10. It won't blow you away, but it's a reasonable choice for a relaxed movie night.
