This short film is enough to put anyone off meat for life, but it raises a host of questions that are not easily answered. One question it does answer though, one not raised here, is why all the hysteria about ritual slaughter, be it Kosher or halal?
Even if it were possible to eliminate all the cruelty and wantonness shown herein, there is no escaping the inconvenient fact that if humans are to eat meat, animals have to die. Is it really more "humane" to shoot a bolt into an animal's brain with or without pre-stunning than it is to turn it upside down and slit its throat while uttering a prayer?
That being said, "Farm To Fridge" does contain some disturbing footage; imagine having your testicles ripped out or another vital part of your anatomy mutilated, or your flesh branded. Or how about being crammed into a small cage for the rest of your short life, locked away from sunlight and fresh air?
Yes, Mother Nature is indeed red in tooth and claw, but does Man have to be quite so brutal? And an equally important point, factory farmed animals are prone to infection and disease, that is a point you might like to mull over before you bite into your next beefburger or chicken nugget.
