The series lost a bit of it's sparkle with this one.
Shopaholic3516 October 2015
In the fourth instalment of The Good Witch series Cassie's not so nice long-lost cousin comes to visit. Her character adds some new spark to a cast that seems to currently be going through an awkward phase. Their character development in this movie just wasn't working for me unfortunately. And even the storyline was a bit non-existent.

This movie doesn't feel as charming as the others and is somewhat transitional in the storyline. It's just nowhere near as exciting. Although it wasn't the greatest, I am still looking forward to watching the rest of the series. Hopefully they can recreate the charm of the original movies because it really is a lovely movie series.

Love these movies but the inconsistencies are plenty.

Warning: Spoilers
It bothers me that the first couple of movies are all about Grey House to the point where it's the focus of the first movie and she almost loses it in the second and the movie before this they make it a point to say that the grandpa, George will take over as half partner at Grey house to help run it.m so he can stay in Middleton. Then in this movie Grey house isn't even shown and rarely spoken of, all the guests end up in the Russell house instead of Grey house where they should be and grandpa George isn't in the movie and I don't think even mentioned at all. Just pretty inconsistent and bothersome.

Good Witch vs Bad Witch
utgard1430 October 2014
Change is in the air in Middleton. Cassie's running for mayor as her long-lost cousin Abigail shows up. Abigail is very similar to Cassie, at least in terms of her manner and mysteriousness. The scenes of the two of them subtly sparring are very well done. While Cassie's preoccupied with her campaign, Abigail creates problems among Cassie's family and friends. Meanwhile a proposed annexation of the town has Cassie and Jake on opposite sides, at least until Jake looks into the matter further.

This is the first movie in the series where Catherine Bell's attempts at improving perfection result in noticeable differences to her appearance. Cheek injections and an upper lip that barely moves are the two most distracting changes. Performance-wise, she's fine in this although the supporting cast and the guest-star steal her spotlight most of the time. Grandpa George is curiously missing from this one. It's a really good entry in the series, possibly the best of all the sequels.

Enjoyed it but not my favorite
LtlHippo30 October 2011
I enjoyed this one, not as much as the others but still good for a lazy night inside. The worst thing was the creepy boyfriend, was he supposed to be like one of the Twilight guys, he looked the part. Can't believe the daughter would be so gullible. Didn't like that storyline. I didn't think Jake looked any chubbier. Martha was funny as usual. So no doubt Cassie will end up pregnant, we will then see if she has a little "Tabitha" and have her mother's powers. Will re-watch the other shows today. Good series. I think the mayor was so full of beans. Was hoping they would really break up and find new partners but this IS a Hallmark show.

The second best Good Witch
oz121230 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
"The Good Witch's Family" is the best one since the original. It was good to see Cassie actually fail at a few things, thanks to her nemesis cousin Abigail. Everything works out in the end, of course, but not until even Cassie has an awakening that she's neglecting her family. And it was also good to see Officer Derek given an expanded presence -- I always felt he added a lot. Jake's "goodbye" to Derek was especially touching (I won't spoil what that's about.)

A lot of subplots, as usual, and they all amazingly tie together. Even Martha has turned into a bit of a sweetheart. I don't know why they didn't say where Grandpa was, but maybe he'll be back.

All and all, a very fun movie for the whole family. Keep them coming!

I loved it

Warning: Spoilers
I've seen every single Good Witch movie and they make the plot lines make since, because they all pick up from each other. If that person would have seen them from the beginning like I have maybe she would have a different opinion. As far as what that person had to say about the incense part, I think that's bull!!!!! I loved every one of the movies and I can't wait for another one to come out,and with the same people.I couldn't see anybody else playing their parts.I have seen all of them at least 4x's and the last one 2x's.I just think this person has bad taste in movies. I don't watch to many dramas, i usually watch horror, action and adventure. These movies however and the Love Come Softly series I watch over and over and those are about all,and that saying a lot. The Good Witch's Family: A huge step backwards
Platypuschow8 September 2017
This 4th Good Witch movie has badly fallen behind and pales in comparison to it's predecessors.

Now to be clear The Good Witch movies are hardly aimed at me, I'm not the demographic but when I watched the first film I found myself actually bewitched *Pun intended* and got aboard the bandwagon.

The movies are charming, sweet and utterly harmless family entertainment.

For those unaware they tell the story of Cassie Nightingale as she arrives at a new town and the adventures she gets up to. Throughout its teased that she is a witch and uses magical powers but everything is so subtle that truth be told the existence of her having any powers is always questionable.

This fact I find very endearing, it's not as blatant as the rest and plays more on her efforts not her waving a magic wand.

This 4th movie has the charm but it simply wasn't entertaining. It's all about a long lost cousin of Cassie's appearing and causing trouble with her family.

The movie isn't bad, it's just very dull compared to the previous efforts.

The Good:

Charming

The Bad:

So cheesy!

And so are her sisters and her cousins and her aunts
boblipton29 October 2011
The Hallmark Channel's series of Halloween movies starring Catherine Bell as Cassie continues with Cassie running for mayor, with events complicated when a cousin shows up and backs another candidate and causes problems with her stepchildren, who are going through teenage angst.

Catherine Bell continues with her perky, low-key performance as Cassie. She never quite does anything that is clearly magical -- other than getting on and off roofs to sweep leaves out of gutters -- which is quite charming. Somehow things always seem to break her way, except when her cousin makes trouble, for no clear reason.

Some of the cast seems to have put on some weight, particularly Chris Potter as her adoring husband. It's an amusing, lightweight piece of fluff, and although Ms. Bell continues to be charming, it's getting a bit long in the tooth. Still, it's a decent time waster and for a Halloween movie it's a decent way to spend a couple of hours.

This one not the best effort
honu200730 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I have thoroughly enjoyed the first three GW movies --- cast great, stories fun, atmosphere appropriately spooky, plenty of little twists and turns. I was so looking forward to this one .... unfortunately, I was disappointed after the long wait. Always ready to see the first three again, I will find something else to do if this one comes back on the TV.

The plot worked well: a long-lost cousin makes her appearance and things get, well, quirky and unpredictable. In spite of all this, Cassandra remains calm and "in the know," for the most part.

There were several things that annoyed us as the story went on:

-REALLY disappointed to find out that the wonderful flirting and attraction between Betty and Derek was tossed off: "My ex-girlfriend used to own a bakery but she moved away." THAT's IT??? What?

  • Wonderful Grandpa who was so close to his kids is gone. And the sweet romance between George and Gwen evaporated into thin air. Another what? Hey, we need good senior-type characters getting a new life...

  • We loved Grey House and all the delicious gardens in the first three movies. THe way the garden images were intertwined with the plot lines was a terrific metaphor. The only mention of Grey House in this new movie is the portrait on the wall of the new house..... did Cassie dump her heritage? The new house is too too pristine and clean. Where are the cobwebs, huh?

We have questions: Did Brandon finish his song for college? How will Cassie deal with her pregnancy as new mayor? How will the marriage work with Jake as Chief reporting to his WIFE? What happens to Tom and wife? Surprised that your magical formula didn't work this time. Catherine Bell is quite talented. I'd be willing to see the fifth installment but was it really "three time's the charm"? Hope not.

Too many disappointments in this movie
bookandcandle20 February 2012
I love the Good Witch series. They are set in a small friendly town and Grey House. This last movie in the series was a disappointment, however, because of inconsistencies and discontinuity.

Where was grandfather George and his girlfriend from the prior movie?

Where was Derek's girlfriend Betty from the prior movie?

Where was the song that Brandon wrote?

Where was Cassie's old Middleton shop with charm and mystery from the prior movie?

Where was the old Grey House with intrigue and character from the prior movie?

Where will Middleton be without Mayor Tinsdale as mayor? He was great.

Where was Cassie's alert intuition to her cousin's schemes?

And where was Brandon's girlfriend from the prior movie?

The attraction of the Good Witch is gone for so many reasons. The only saving grace was that the Tinsdales united in love and there were excellent resolutions for all the other problems presented, but for me the climate changed and Middleton and Grey House were lost forever.

A little disappointed
Luvhallmark30 October 2011
Warning: Spoilers
While I loved the previous 3 installments of this series, I must say, I was bored with The Good Witch's Family. It seems as though the production team chose to cut corners....where were the scenes from The Gray Lady's house (the one that George was taking over)...he wasn't even in this movie or his new girlfriend, how disappointing. The Bell, Book and Candle shop to me...seemed to lose it's charm (too much clutter in the shop)...the movie overall...lost it's charm and warm cozy feeling....in my opinion.

I do agree with the first reviewer, some of the cast has definitely gained weight....such is life.

Hopefully, if there's a fifth installment, they will recapture the spark that drew me to begin watching!

Even though I wasn't thrilled with The Good Witch's Family, I will continue to watch the new movies as they come out.

Needed Another Draft
athompsonblue17 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Cassie's long-lost cousin shows up, and it soon becomes apparent that she's a malicious sociopath. But, when Cassie corrects a long-held misconception, Abigail's character does a complete 180 on the spot. I know that Cassie is a very forgiving person, but the rest of her family had no problem welcoming Abigail back, despite everything she'd done?

Also, why would Cassie run for more mayor, when she's already got a store and is hoping to have a baby? The fifth movie just reinforces that she's bitten off more than she can chew.

Too dark
nightroses15 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This wasn't the best of the "Good Witch" films. Although a lot of characters went missing, the magic and beauty of Grey House was missing. Where was Isis the cat? Where was grandpa? What happened to the magic shop? The kids have grown but there were tense moments and awkward things that wasn't flowing with the story. The secret cousin appeared on the doorstep, with her chaotic magic and voodoo dolls. She was hellebent on ruining Cassie's life by breaking up relationships. After she left damage, she stole Cassie's wooden box and left. This film was too cold and bitter because it lacked the same ingredients and sweetness of the prior films. It focused too heavily on a political subject, while things got out of hand when Jake is sacked from his job and that was harsh. The final news of Cassie being pregnant only means how much she'll be taking on so much work.

Mayor Mom?
HallmarkMovieBuff21 April 2012
Every Good Witch movie introduces a new stranger in town to stir things up. In this case, it's Cassie's heretofore unknown cousin, Abigail.

Cassie and Jake are now married, and Cassie is stepmother to Jake's two teenagers.

The town is divided over a proposed bridge, which the men (particularly Mayor Tinsdale) favor, expecting it to bring prosperity, and the women (led by Martha Tinsdale) oppose, fearing it will bring destruction (of the town's old-style charm). As the mayor's term in office is expiring, the women prevail upon Cassie to run for mayor, and with Martha's support, to lead the opposition to the bridge.

Cousin Abigail's particular witchy talent is in the casting of spells. Deserted by her father when she was just 13, she seems determined to hex the Russell household by whatever means possible, for reasons known but to her, including charming Deputy Derek Sanders to run for mayor against Cassie. (Derek's baker girlfriend from the previous movie has mysteriously moved out of town, leaving him susceptible to Abigail's bewitching influence.)

Of the four movies in the series to date, this is the edgiest and most threatening in terms of conflict, and viewers' displeasure is reflected (as of this writing) in a marginally lower average rating than all previous installments.

So, who will win the mayoral race? And will the bridge be built, or not? What is Abigail's motive? And after all this turmoil, will Middleton ever be peaceful again?

But more importantly, will there be another Good Witch movie? If so, what will be in store for "The Good Witch's Family"? Have we seen the last of the Tinsdales? And what new stranger will bring trouble to the town?

Tips for the production to improve on the series!
FinalChange24 June 2012
I finally got around to watching this one and I have to agree with most the other reviews: boy has Chris Potter become portly or is Jake fearing for his life in peaceful Middleton, Canada and wearing 3 bulletproof vests under his jacket!? If he doesn't watch it, Chris will soon catch up to Catherine Disher! Also he could use some botox or filler. Last time I saw him in interviews he looked a lot less wrinkled than this. Did he miss his injection appointments? Anyway he sure wasn't in the movie much at all this time and, again: real hard buying him as love interest or even straight. He sure doesn't show much affection in his eyes to his now wife. It's called acting, Chris, you used to know how to do this, what happened? Equally horrid is Catherine Bell's face: she's packing even more silicone in her cheeks than in movie 1. In fact she could play Maleficent and not need external prosthesis due that her silicone is stuffed deep below her skin! Her hair is still as flat and dingy as ever.

I can't add much more than the other reviewers have already said, except Chris Potter needs to stop leaving the police force (hello throw back to KFTLC packing his little box of stuff) and the storyline was horrid and did not move that much at all. Also whoever played Abigail was good, and she was a looker, a little like Megan Fox's little sister, a nice contrast to Catherine Bell's plastic face. OK so, how about some tips for the production to improve on the next film?

1. Have Chris Potter hit the gym and give him some DHEA, green tea and/or body building & fat burning amino acids. No one expects him to look 35 any more but come on! And get some romance scenes going.

2. MORE MAGIC! Enough of the wishy-washy is she or is she not? The title says "Witch" not "Pseudo New Ager Poser". Get some major magic tools, a wand, a crystal ball that she actually uses, you get the gist. Browse witchcraft websites and get this going. Sure keep it family but make it more hardcore so far as the witch/magic part is concerned. We could have used a close up on those stones (amethysts?) that Martha remarked she was selling for 25c. Give us close ups on the magical tools! And a full-on séance or spell casting scene would be tops! The voodoo dolls were a nice touch except you didn't do enough with them. SET THE MAGICAL MOOD!

3. Get Catherine Bell some decent clothes! No one expects her to dress like Dynasty but enough with the dull garb. Give the woman some color, hot pink, royal blue, bright red, fiery orange, bright green, titillating teal or turquoise, sequined purple etc. The half cloak she wore almost went there but it was dull gray plaid with a terrible cut above her rear. The red lining was a nice touch, more of that. Think magic: satin, sequins, glitter strategically placed, not overbearing would be cool. And do something with her hair. Extensions will give her much needed volume. Maybe a few curls too, like a lioness wig.

4. Bring back the old shop, make it cozy & witchy. Bring back Grey House. Make it more eerie. I'm thinking ghosts, sure go with are there or are there not, but get some good spooky music to go along. And bring back the old couple if the actors would (Grandpa).

5. Write a story that is not a yawn-fest this time. Can't help you with that except for the ghosts idea, no need to pay me royalties, it's on me. Hire the writers from story 1 and take it from there. Then your ratings will improve or else this series is going downhill faster than Obama's presidency. That's it.
