Filmmaker Anthony Guilbert's latest short film, Mirabilis, proved a huge learning curve. Set to screen at the New York City International Film Festival in August, the work's dialogue is completely delivered through Auslan, the Australian sign language. "I did not know any sign language before making this film and I had to learn the basics with my actors with the help of two Auslan interpreters," Guilbert tells us. The short tells the story of a young woman who enters a city pub one evening and meets someone who appears to be her father. What is clear is that the older man is deaf and the emotional pair both converse in Auslan.
