A portacath (usually referred to as a port) is placed under the surface of the skin. Archer's can be seen protruding out of his skin. Implantable catheters that stick out of the skin are called PICC (Peripherally inserted central catheter) lines.
Not sure what Krieger is trying to accomplish by putting what turns out to be Archer's fake chemo medicine under his microscope, but it is certainly not possible to see any difference to a possibly fake solution there.
