In the 1920s and 30s, Vitaphone made a long series of one-reelers in which they brought in various vaudeville and night club acts and recorded them for posterity. The problem was that the sound system in the early ones was primitive--with the sound recorded on a separate disc. However, recently a restoration project was begun and using the internet they've tracked down the various film and sound elements and have combined them. A tiny number of these have been shown on Turner Classic Movies and several large collections of them have been released on DVD.
The opening title card for "A Laugh for Two" is a in very rough shape but fortunately the rest is much better. Actually, I'm not 100% sure this is fortunate, as the act consisting of Russ Brown and Jean Whitaker is pretty terrible. It begins with the pair coming onto stage and Russ talking about how he made a bet that Jean couldn't keep her mouth shut for five minute because women LOVE to talk (yes, I know this is very sexist) and for about the first five minutes he talks non-stop--telling some of the worst jokes I've ever heard. Then, she leaves and soon returns and begins talking. At the end, they sing a small number and it ends.
This is the sort of 2nd or 3rd rate act that sometimes got recorded by Vitaphone. They weren't all the quality of the Count Basie Orchestra or Rudy Vallee!
