Antidote to bad movies
devburmansaptarshi3 March 2023
Gulmohar is breathtaking. It is so beautifully weaved, almost felt like I am watching performances through a glass window. It was surreal, the direction to the writing to the screenplay, to everything.

It's not something that one would enjoy in their leisure time. It takes time to build its base, (a slow burner) the director demands his audience to go on this journey along with him and his vision. All you have to do is follow his lead, and when you do you will be mesmerized.

Gulmohar, in my opinion, concluded appropriately since it leaves you wondering what comes next without giving too much away. It gives you just enough information to believe what seems most reasonable to you, everyone must have their own perception of how a story should pan out.

Manoj Bajpayee is not a subject I want to bring up. Since we are well aware of his identity and filmography. I could literally sit and watch this man do nothing for 12 hours and never get tired of it. This man is our National Treasure.

A heartfelt tale of a family.
cifarshayar3 March 2023
While moving out from their old house of 34 years family experiences different emotions, learn different expects of their relations and discovers something different in them.

The movie is all about this heartfelt story written by directer Rahul V Chitella and Arpita Mukherjee which is along with great performances by the cast specially Sharmila Tagore, Manoj Bajpayee,Amol Palekar and others. You feel with them and experience their emotions which create a connect with the audience and made it a heartfelt watch.

The music given by Prasad S N and songs penned by Tanveer Ghazi are also endearing. This should be in your must watch list this weekend.

A lovely family drama!
mayankshukla14047 March 2023
Gulmohar is a beautiful film. An emotional family drama with some lovely performances and dialogues. It's truly a delight to watch Manoj Bajpayee, Sharmila Tagore and Amol Palekar together in one film.

Bajpayee keeps reminding us that he is one of the best we have. Such a moving performance. Outstanding! It was a pleasure watching Sharmila on screen after a long time and she is excellent. In fact she along with Bajpayee pretty much stole the scene. It is a delight to watch Amol Palekar even while playing a grey role in this one. We have hardly seen Simran Bagga in Hindi cinema and she is so good. All the other actors including Suraj Sharma are fine too.

Overall this one is a must watch especially if you crave quality family dramas. Rajiv Chittella makes an assured debut as a director.

A message to modern Indian society
premchauhan-900545 March 2023
Gulmohar (2023 Unique storytelling scripted with some utter truths of the modern world and families. In cities, buildings are getting taller and the bond between family members even weaker. The biggest irony regarding modern society is how everyone around us is trying to disguise their individuality and racing towards virtual love and popularity. Humans of the 21st-century love to pull a complicated card out of a deck of a simpler life.

The world seems so technologically advanced that a family rarely has a discussion sitting together in a room. As we continue to advance technologically, it is important to maintain strong familial bonds and prioritise authentic human connection. Despite the allure of virtual popularity, true fulfilment comes from genuine relationships and a shared sense of community. We must make a conscious effort to resist the temptation of solitary, superficial life and instead embrace the richness and depth that come from human connection.

What a Beautiful movie !
shivnarang3 March 2023
If you like movies like Monsoon Wedding and Kapoor & Sons, this is a movie for you.

It is a warmhearted movie executed with venerability and sensitivity, about a dysfunctional family, living the last few days in their 31 year old family home.

It is a Multi-starer, but obviously Sharmila Tagore and Manoj Bajpayee were the best part of the movie. It was a delight to see Sharmila Tagore act after such a long time. She just lights up the screen every time she's on. And Manoj Bajpayee, as always, delivers an extremely dependable performance. His take on this sensitive subject and role is nuanced and layered.

Dialogue heavy family drama.
chand-suhas7 April 2023
Gulmohar focuses on dysfunctional family's last four days in their home before they shirt permanently to their new homes and lives respectively. Hidden truth, insecurities make their way out as the family members try hard to keep it together. It indeed is a touching concept to dwell into a family's attachment to the house they grew up in. Gulmohar has several endearing characters and their internal conflicts highly relatable.

The short coming is how much it relies on dialogues to convey the emotions, to an extent they tend to touch the surface of several conflicts. It is indeed the Veteran actors who effortlessly get into the skin of these characters and elevate each of these scenes. One wishes the conflict point within the family with respect to the written will was much stronger, especially the final conversation between Sharmila Tagore and Amol Palekar.

I am going with the extra rating solely for the reveal in the end about Pondicherry. Otherwise I definitely wished the conversation between Sharmila Tagore and her grand daughter to be more real. But the attempt to make the flashback more emotional, it limits itself in handling the sensitive moment. The screenplay has it's flaws but the lovable characters turn this into a decent watch.

Beautiful!
nagreganesh3 March 2023
Manoj Bajpayee in an interview said that he is very proud of this movie and I can attest to the fact that this is a wonderful movie with beautiful performances, music and vibes.

If you are craving for a movie that's somewhat thematically similar to Kapoor & Sons or Monsoon Wedding, this would fit right in there and yet Gulmohar creates its own space for itself though it's not new.

I loved the performances by every cast member and it felt natural. The music was amazing and it elevated the scenes and the emotions that were being portrayed.

It's not a perfect movie. There are some elements which feel they were not necessary to the screenplay or maybe seemed a bit forced to attract the Gen-Z audience to Disney+ Hotstar especially the storylines with the 2 Batra kids. But Suraj and Utsavi acted well.

I first thought this could be some psychological thriller looking at the poster but it was actually a emotionally heavy feel good movie. I would definitely recommend to watch this film!

Matriarch Prevails
sanjeevanwar3 March 2023
Anwar Says: Story is the soul of a movie and Gulmohar is the latest example. This could have been a web series of 8 episodes but then you may not be able to find yourself a part of Batra Family and the debutant director Rahul V. Chitella rightly condensed it to 132 minutes movie. You would definitely correlate with one of the characters.

Another best part is that the script oscillates between the past deeds of the seniors of the family and its repercussions on the present generation but all told in fluid way and every character flow with it. Before I comment on comeback of Sharmila Tagore, the character completely woven and stood like pillar for her husband and the family is Simran, wife of Manoj Bajpayee. The pivotal of the story is matriarch of Tagore and the ideal son Manoj and Suddenly a twist comes and tried to shatter the family but Gulmohar tree roots are always strong. The only character who could not come up is Amol Palekar.

The relatable and engaging story, charm of Sharmila Tagore, ensemble of cast, brilliance of Manoj , soothing music and background score makes this four days story a perfect watch for this weekend.

GULMOHAR:-a warm and heartfelt letter to previous outstanding family dramas.
puranjanbasak11 March 2023
Gulmohar is a drama film directed by rahul v chittella.

Manoj bajpayee and sharmila tagore are the souls of this film. The chemistry and the acting crescendos that happen between the duo is marvellous. So much of these two legends are still untapped, i feel. Simran as arun's wife plays the mediator wonderfully. Stuff has hit the fan and she is the calmest and subtlest of all. The rest of the characters in their roles are perfect.

This film gets the relationships and its complexities on point. When a major conflict is discovered, all the relationships are put to a test. Arun, on his hurtful resentments with his mom ends with a heartfelt closure. But not every relationship gets a closure is the major crux. Arun and his son's conflict is still unsolved yet they choose to be together and have fun. The love between the cook and guard was the best executed. How one's illiteracy and unworthy of someone can fuel jealousy and futile ego is brilliantly shed light upon, without villainizing them. The lesbian angle is touched on the surface though. It required more depth.

The cinematography is outstanding. The use of natural light and light yellow hue provides warmth. The music is soulful and artistic. The use of bgm is minimal.

The screenplay thought engaging lacks pace and sometimes warmth too. The angle of adi's startup feels overwrought and tiring. Similarly, arun's mom's flashback portions is also half-hearted. Needed better writing.

This is a wonderful film which has a lot of warmth and good vibes. You will surely love it.

It's Okayish, but huge success from Hindi movies standard.
kumarorrakesh24722 March 2023
It's nothing great, it's only different and has a touch and vibe of Kapoor and sons... Okayish but a huge leap from Hindi movie perspective... Since Hindi movie industry's current state is in doldrums.

Suraj Sharma is good, and veterens like amol & sharmila has a calming presence.

Manoj is as usual exquisite in his role, effortless as they say but his character is always pissed his son, so it's one dimensional in a way.

Simran's character was a revelation but short.

All other character are just fillers.

Tamil character maid is unnecessary addition.

So many cliched character sketches and situations.

But it's a good watch for hopeless Hindi movie industry.

Engrossing movie with excellent star cast
rajnnair5 March 2023
Gulmohar The last 4 days of the Batra family as they move out from their home of many years and shift to another city.

While they are staying in a single house there are differences and friction with many of them not in talking terms.

As the movie starts with a party you are immediately engrossed in whats happening in the family as you get to know each of the characters and their secrets as it unfolds.

Debutant director Rahul has a good mix of stalwarts and fresh starcast who do an excellent job in elevating the movie.

Manoj - He is the soul of Gulmohar. He brings multiple nuances to the character with eye to details which is a treat to to watch. His connect with his biological father, his bonding with his wife simran, his connect with his mom, his stained relationship with his son. Manoj is in full form. Watch him try to stop a fight between his watchman and supervisor and in the end hitting the watchman, thats superb acting. Also the scene in the end here he embraces his mom waiting with open arms will make you cry.

Sharmila - A comback after many years, she gives everything to the role. She is superb.

Simran - She was the surprise package with a towering performance. A sthe person who holds the family together she is great. Her scenes with manoj are scene stealer. Hope she gets to do more of similar strong roles.

There are some more stand out performances worth mentioning: Suraj Sharma stands out in his role.

Jetendra as the watchman Reshma as the house help.

Typical rich people's problem movie
anantadutta3 March 2023
Had waited eagerly, mainly because being a fan of Manoj Bajpayee like many others. But the movie is a stereotype in so many ways that probably u have seen similar movies many times in the past. For example, though I dont remember the storyline of joya akhtar's "Dil Dhadakne do", but it felt like watching an adaptation of that movie. An array of great actors and actresses with good performances wasted with an average storyline, average script, unnecessary melodrama (subtle but continuous), and continuous effort to show deep meaning in ordinary issues faced by most human in life as if these issues take deeper meaning if set against some rich people. At the end (by mid of the movie) u end up feeling frustrated that why such a good opportunity is wasted with such an average story and plot. Disappointing overall.

Gulmohar felt like it tried to pack in a lot.
gangeshgnair17 March 2023
Gulmohar felt like it tried to pack in a lot.

All the actors were amazing. Manoj bajpayee and sharmila tagore being the main attraction to me. The technical aspects are good, cinematography was so nice, some shots especially the interior shots in the house were amazing. Some characters were nice and compelling. I really liked the way manoj bajpayees character was written.

The issue i had with the movie is that it felt like its trying to pack in a lot. I really wished they focused on manoj bajpayees character more and explored the whole story in his perspective. I feel the story would have been conveyed more impactively and emotionally in that way. This movie would have been nice as a series if they wanted to present it this way. The dialogues felt a bit dramatic and inorganic sometimes.

A below average experience according to me.

Movie for your soul. Bollywood's true essence
uditsaum8 March 2023
A perfect blend of story, drama, top-notch cast and background score. Yes, you are in for a treat here. This movie touches you with its subtleness. Thanks to the director and story writter for giving us a break from the masala no-story nonsense. Movies like this are made once in a decade.

Manoj Bajpai delivered his best yet again. Amol palekar sir has a brief role but his presence can be felt. Sharmila tagore..she is eternal beauty. I am definitely recommending this movie to my parents. But don't be fooled to think the movie runs on these shoulders alone. Every single actors have beautifully played their role. Throughout the movie I wished if I could watch it with them. I would recommend this movie to all. You won't be disappointed. A big thanks to the makers. Lots of love. Please make more of such movies.

Will is damn important! Just kidding!!
maanikroda4 March 2023
What shall I write about a film that's so dear to my heart?

I reckon, this isn't just a film or picture, it's much more than that.

This is a story of Batras who lived in Lutyen's Delhi and the name is of course Gulmohar Villa. It does begin with a nice warm party which uncasually turns in to a bitter party. Sharmila Tagore is playing the role of elder in the family and she has adopted son Manoj Bajpayee and his three children.

I must appalled the roles played by each one as they portray a sense of calm. Absolutely, the Gulmohar Villa is on sale and Manoj has purchased a new home in Gurugram and his son has rented a flat since, he doesn't wanna get involved in this things.

It's there perfectly true attitude that struck a chord with the viewer. And the sense with which movie is described is the true aspect. We all do know writing a Will isn't an easy decision but Manoj's father had to take one and he did on the name of not him but his younger brother.

He didn't have any faults but eventually the movie goes on. I must give credit where it's due. Screenplay and story were the two main essence which kept me and my girlfriend to watch entire movie. Three cheers for that.

In the end, a great story with superb acting. They did have the HOLI case in the ending which was kind of refreshing as Holi is approching.

Awesome work!

Good movie, but ...
Innacana5 March 2023
Overall a good average movie, not something to brag about. Some good messages about families and relationships. However, some messages are contradictory in this movie.

I agree with another reviewer here that this is more like first world problems, family issues for rich people. Some people judge others or consider only present, they forget the past and what were given to them before (specially rich people). The protagonist forgot that even though he may not be given the house, he was brought up like a son and given all the privileges in life by his parents.

Is the lgbtq agenda necessary or relevant in this movie? The movie is about family, relationship, lineage and offspring, so lgbtq here seems to be opposite idea to what this movie is about. This LGBTQ agendas seems to be in every other movies in India now a days.

Touches your soul- relatable and cathartic
shwetachan3 March 2023
Gulmohar felt like a complete film, you came out it having an emotion and also a fulfilling viewing experience. Many shows and movies are released nowadays due to proliferation of the OTT platform. We watch many movies with awesome actors only to realize that the story, plot wasn't good. In the end you are left dissatisfied. Yet we watched them because so many great actors are now starring in these projects and they keep you going. Gulmohar is the combination of great acting combined with a good script, dialogues and direction. Relatable story, with an awesome performance by Manoj Bajpayee. Watch it, feel good and nostalgic at the same time.

a nuanced family drama....
SumanShakya13 May 2023
Every family that looks perfect outside, has its problems and secrets. This is the theme of "Gulmohar," which is one of the revered family dramas lately to be churned from Bollywood. The film beautifully unravels the crises pertaining in the members of a family residing in an ancestral bungalow of Delhi. The members are dealing with several issues in their life like quest to find one's biological parent, the generation gap, persistence and frustration in career, sexuality, and keeping to put up with the family relations.

The film has several shades to its characters, which just get fully assorted in the drama; and all give a fantastic performance. A film has much of controlled performances, notably from Amol Palekar, Manoj Bajpayee, and Sharmila Tagore. The pace of the film is obviously very slow, but it's the beauty with which the characters and drama unravel makes it worth watching.

Rating: 2.5 stars out of 4.

Reality of every standard family
pranayjalvi5 March 2023
An engaging, gentle family drama that flips open crypts of the mind and the heart and probes the discomfiting secrets and fears that lie buried down there, Gulmohar, celebrates the healing potential of kinship even as it confronts the trauma of disruption brought on by quirks of destiny or as repercussions of individual decisions.

Gulmohar's relatability factor is its biggest strength. The show consists of extremely flawed yet relatable characters who go through the kind of problems that most people face in their daily lives. There are very common family dynamics that have been touched upon, like the ones of the father and the son, the mother-in-law and the daughter-in-law, and the husband and the wife among other dynamics, which not only help grab immediate attention but also keep viewers totally invested in the subject matter.

The cinematography is first rate and the performances are layered and nuanced. The direction by Rahul Chittella is very effective. Manoj Bajpayee and Sharmila Tagore were the backbone of this drama, with supporting characters providing strong performance as well.

My Rating : 8/10.

Monotonous and Boring
nimishgour24 March 2023
This film's premise reminded me of Monsoon wedding right from the first frame. But what prevented it from reaching the level of Monsoon wedding is the monotonous narrative.

Every character is so serious and irritated. It felt that as if everyone in this world is constipated.

The track of the maid and the watchman here reminded me of the track of the marriage organiser and the maid in Monsoon wedding. There that track became the highlight of the film and established the actors playing that characters.

It is only the pleasure of watching some amazing actors, great cinematography etc. That kept me watching.

An opportunity to make a great film got wasted.

One of the best family drama
aadil-803383 March 2023
This movie is an outstanding showcase of excellent direction and incredible storyline. Each and every actor did a brilliant job in portraying the character given to them. The showcase of feminism is totally fresh and its a breath of fresh air. The portrayal of homosexuality is very subtle.

Manoj Bajpayee and Sharmila tagore deserves round of applause for giving performances like this.

Songs are well made and their positioning in the movie is great.

It greatly shows the dynamics of being in a joint family and its a great movie to watch with your family.

You will definitely cry at least once while watching it.

A heartwarming drama about family values and relations
SoumikBanerjee19965 March 2023
This movie neither exceeded nor fell far short of my expectations; despite not fulfilling all of my innermost desires, it was compelling enough for me to see the entire production.

Gulmohar is a tender, touching story about the Batra family, who, in the face of broken promises and tragic truths, must restore faith in their shattered homes and fractured relations.

A mother's wish, a son's realisation, and a father's reconciliation, together with other elements, made the entire scenario extremely thought provoking and high on relatable emotions.

My sole criticism is not with the film per se, but with the fact that I've seen better films in this genre; not only Bollywood, but many regional industries have been busy producing similar flicks, and some of them appear brighter! I'm not in any way implying that this was a mediocre attempt; let's just say I expected greater things from it and it failed to deliver!

Same old family drama shama!!
nadkarnisumeet5 March 2023
Gulmohar review:

Relying purely on its actors' performances than on content, Gulmohar turns out to be an average fare at best. Truly, the screenplay has nothing new to offer to its viewers - the same old dysfunctional family, generation gap, closet lesbian matriarch and an ending as predictable as Holi in March. There is zero novelty factor here!!

On the film's few positive count the still pretty at seventy Sharmila Tagore's graceful debut on OTT, Manoj Bajpayee's sincere act as her adopted son and Simran (remember her from Tere Mere Sapne (1996)) impressing as the dominating 'bahu'. The rest of the new gen cast is simply okey dokey. So is the movie as a whole.

Watch it if you have nothing to do this weekend.

Regards, Sumeet Nadkarni.

An emotional journey embellished by some memorable performances
pradiptanag5 March 2023
Gulmohar on Disney+ Hotstar is a heartwarming saga of a dysfunctional family embellished by a jaw-dropping performance by Manoj Bajpayee supported by an ensemble cast consisting of stalwarts like Sharmila Tagore and Amol Palekar. An emotional rollercoaster journey that keeps you glued to your seats despite being slow courtesy of its wonderfully etched out characters and layered screenplay. Since Kapoor and Sons, this is unquestionably the best family drama I've watched. Even the most unimportant characters have been given equal importance like the other characters. That is why the film is special. Don't miss the film guys.

Direct 'dil Se' family bonding movie that will touch the right emotional cords
PavanKV4 March 2023
Gulmohar- Direct 'dil Se' family bonding movie that will touch the right emotional cords.

Director has presented a simple story, but with effective screenplay and genuine dialogue delivery that feels realistic and to the current trend. He has penned every character with so much care- from the watchmen, cook to the main characters. Hats off!

Manoj Bajpayee goes inside his character with utmost ease. Simran delivers with maturity. The real mountain is Sharmila Tagore with so much grace, emotions and zabardast performance.

The movie portrays lots of wisdom, frustration, sadness, happiness, struggles, bonding and sweet memories.

Life is all about hope!

Home is not made of just bricks or wood, but it is made of love and people surrounding it.

This movie was "Meant To Be" seen!
