- TriviaThe episode title "Close Encounters" actually has a connection to The Richard Dreyfus movie of the similar name.
Perry Newsome (Effie's Father) is making The "Devil's Tower" with two pints of potatoes on his plate and a fork. Richard Dreyfus did the same think in the Steven Spielberg movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
The episode never explains how Perry Newsome came to envision a location that takes 24-hrs to reach from Toronto in a modern car and road system. It is a tip of the hat joke, still.

Series must progress to next logical chapter
I began watching Murdoch Mysteries when it was in its second season, and I still love watch the old seasons and quite recently I began with Season 1 as I await the next Season 15 episode in the States.
15 years are showing not only in the stale writing of the past few seasons, but in the actors portrayal of their characters, and in the appearance of the actors and us the viewers. Just think about how well we would perform in the same job at the same company for 15 years...
The passage of time just dictates that the characters must move on and the show must change the format. 1) Murdoch must move to the Inspector Role 2) Inspector Brackenreid to Chief Constable, 3) Crabtree to Detective, could be junior to Watts' being moved to Murdoch's office as senior (if his character remains) and while I do enjoy Higgins, his character is not germane to the series, so we could retire him and just have his family make special appearance like Terrence Meyers and James Pendrick.
This would allow for new younger characters to be added, like a Constable 1st Class, replacing George and a replacement for Higgins and yes, let's replace Violet Hart. I mean its clear that she and her husband are nefarious people, so let's play this arc out in 16 ending with death or imprisonment for the couple or let's make her Station House 4 nemesis that comes back every season, I mean I think she would be the ultimate nemesis for Murdock, Watts and Crabtree.
Lastly, new writers who can return the show back to a fine Turn of the Century mystery, with a tad of comedy and not the parody of itself it has become. Add new characters that compliment the existing ones, don't try and recreate mini versions of existing characters i.e., the French George or Murdoch's Brother.
Or could it be, that I've just out matured this show?
