"Cruel Intentions"-like wanna-be falls way short
paul-allaer1 February 2014
"California Scheming" (2014 release; 98 min.) brings the story of Chloe Vandersteen (played by Gia Mantegna), a teenager in Malibu, and her equally bored friends. As the movie opens, Chloe find a wounded seagull on the beach. Two teenage guys, Jason and Nick, happen to walk by and they help Chloe to take care of the bird. The three of them strike up a quick friendship and are hanging out more and more. Later on, another girl, Hillary, who just moved there from Boston and is still grieving over her mom's death, befriends the three. Meanwhile we get to see Chloe starting to manipulate her friends. But is everything to be taken at face value? Or are we being set up by the script for a major plot twist? And why will the term 'creepy crawling' become a familiar one? At this point we are a good 30 minutes into the movie and to tell you more might spoil your viewing experience.

Couple of comments: first, this is the directing debut of long-time producer Marco Weber. He also wrote and edited the movie. Second, the movie takes forever to get mildly interesting towards the last half four. There is literally nothing happening In the first hour that is of any interest, other than the vague character building, I suppose. Yet even there, we do not understand what makes Chloe tick, or why she does what she does. Third, I get it that this movie wants to be the next "Cruel Intentions" but I have to tell you that compared to this, "Cruel Intentions" is an instant classic and a standard bearer. Fourth, what is with this movie's poster (a naked Gia Mantegna)? Just so you know: there is no nudity in the film, none. I think it is a shameless attempt to lure the uninformed viewer into thinking this movie is something which it isn't. Fifth, the photography in the movie is eye-candy (all filmed on location in Malibu). Last but not least, there are some great indie and surf songs playing in the movie. I was eager to check out what those songs were, but imagine my surprise when in the end credits the songs are not even listed! "California Scheming" opened this weekend on a single screen for all of Greater Cincinnati. I had a private showing at the matinée screening where I saw this at today, as in: I was literally the only person in the theater. I cannot imagine that this movie will play more than 1 week in the theater. But eve if it did, I honestly cannot recommend this movie. "California Scheming" is wildly uneven, with no clear direction for most of the movie and a script that is frighteningly void of good ideas and content. VIEWER BEWARE!

California girls are unpredictable
adi_200213 October 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Chloe is an attractive teen who one day tries to help a seagull and he is aided by Nick and Jason. They manage to save the bird only to find out that later Chloe will keep it as a pet and eventually kills the animal. The two boys spend increasingly more time with the girl and soon will discover some dark secrets about their newest friend. After a while another girl, Hillary joins the gang and now they are all caught in Chloe's dirty game.

The characters are presented too forced right from the beginning but for a bunch of unknown actors, they've manage to play their part very well so the acting wasn't so bad. The problem is with the story that doesn't evolve. The director even borrow an idea from The Bling Ring but this didn't save the film, brings even more harm to the scenario.

In conclusion, you might not fall asleep but still does not worth to spoil your eyes watching this.

dumbest movie ever made
thepinkrabbit31 January 2014
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is the worst I've seen. I was mislead by the high note in IMDb but I didn't saw it was only the opinion of less than 10 people.

It's all about a crazy girl that manipulates 2 guys and a girl. The scenario is empty. Nothing really happens and when it does we have no clue why the 2 guys do whatever the crazy girl tell them to. It's full of cliché and stereotypes. One scene was quite amusing though : one of the guy is buying condoms and the girl he'd like to make out with comes at that moment. But that's all.

It's definitely not a "thriller" it's a "so what..?" . Besides we know right from the beginning what is going to happen and not because of "clever" deduction but just because that's the way the scenario is written.. I lost 90 minutes of my life. only good thing is that one actor is cute to watch. Avoid!

Worst Film of the Decade
FilmAddit7 March 2014
I don't even want to bother to elaborate why this film is so bad, considering enough time wasted watching it.

But since I have to write minimum 10 lines, this is what it is -

The film has NO story. No character development. It's about a girl who uses her beauty to manipulate people around her, but no offence, the female lead's look is below average, how is this convincible?

It's like a bad student film that only the creators get excited about what they're trying to show, while the audiences have no idea what they're watching.

Just stay away from this film. Not even when there's a free show on TV or online.

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME.

(Are those good reviews coming from people associated with this film by the way? Otherwise it's unbelievable that a real audience would say anything good about such a bad film.)

Simply a waste of time.
rjpa-1200811 July 2016
This movie goes nowhere slowly. Save your self the trouble and watch _anything_ else! It is not poignant, enlightening, engaging, suspenseful, or the "thriller" it claims to be. It has an amazingly sleepy plot trajectory. The provocative cover photo leads to nothing really provocative with the exception of implied oral sex. The trailer is actually much better than the movie (and if this movie made any money in the theaters, it was because of the trailer - Once the word got out, I'm sure this film was pulled fast). This movie is available free from many streaming services. You get what you pay for! The final scene is much too long to wait. I enjoyed the credits more than I enjoyed the movie, simply because the soporific story was over. I feel like I fell for some cruel joke.

BE GOOD AND BE GOOD AT IT
nogodnomasters24 May 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Chloe (Gia Mantegna) lives in a divided Malibu home. Dad is in NY with a new family. Mom lives in a world of wannabe stardom playing small roles, being an absentee mom, sleeping with producers. Chloe is indeed scheming, flirty, manipulative, uses everyone, has deep anger management issues, and appears to be psychotic. She destroys the lives of the people she touches. Her idols are Charles Manson and porn star Sasha Grey. She wants to be both...i.e. look for the similarities to make sense of the production.

New girl Hillary (Rachel Seiferth) is very vulnerable following the death of her mother. Jason (Spencer Daniels) and Nick (Rachel Seiferth) get to hang out with pretty girls so they tolerate Chloe's erratic behavior.

The film had potential, except it didn't go anywhere, except that end thing which wasn't well done. I imagine this film is a statement on the effect negative role models have on troubled individuals in society, yet it would have been nice to have been tad more entertaining.

Parental Guide: F-bomb, brief sex, No nudity.

True to life and scary
minimindyb31 January 2014
I just finished watching and the thing that scared me the most wasn't any kind of cheap 'pop out at you' scares, but the fact that these are very real feeling kids in situations that might hit close to home for a lot of teens. I knew girls in school who were just like Chloe. The ones that use their looks to get other people to do whatever they want. And the other kids feel real too. The ones who just want to fit in or the ones that get bullied into doing things they wouldn't normally do. So this isn't the kind of movie that keep you hanging onto the edge of your seat, but it's the kind where it burns really slow and makes you think of people that you know and situations you've been in. Definitely check it out if you want to see something that you'll still be feeling after you're done watching it.

Like an old fashion suspense thriller with a modern youthful twist.
face-819-9337261 February 2014
Warning: Spoilers
The Crush meets Cruel Intentions after a bath of American Psycho. This is a stylish movie, there are a few styles very much complimenting each other. First you have the effect of keeping all adult authority figures obscured, or in complete darkness so that the story could remain focused completely on the the leads much like an adult in Peanuts has a garbled voice, and is never really shown. When all secrets come to light so do the adults, and the whole world takes on a wider focus. There is a mean girl in this movie that you will hate, at first though the acting is a bit harsh, and choppy, and needs a little time to settle in. There is an obvious direction that you can see these kids heading, and the only questions you will have will be the ones that are answered in the last five minutes. This is a movie that I Enjoyed, and at just about an hour and a half after starting on a sour note I am glad I stuck with it. This one gets a recommendation from me to any suspense thriller buffs, this is free of language, but there is a lot of drug use. Overall it was a fun story, and I am glad they told it to me.

portrayal of the dynamic of teen angst
thegiashoot31 January 2014
Actually don't agree with previews reviewer at all. Very dark, atmospheric and sophisticated story about the dynamic of teenage angst. This is for sure not your average thriller because it goes much deeper. The actors are totally believable and it sometimes feels like you know each of them from high school.it's fascinating to watch them as the story unfolds and the ending is just a punch in your gut.You can bet that the film will massively polarize and if you're looking for "I know what you did last summer" you will be very disappointed, if you liked "Twin Peaks" you might dig this one. Looking at some of the other films the director made one can see that he obviously enjoys being in the audiences face and not necessarily giving them what they expect. Worth checking it out.

Basically a remake of "Last Summer"
howells23 April 2017
I've read through all the reviews and I'm surprised no one mentioned that this is a pretty obvious remake of Frank Perry's 1969 film "Last Summer". As soon as I saw the seagull with the girl and the two boys that came along, I recognized the plot. Then when the second girl showed up I was convinced they were doing an uncredited remake of that amazing and disturbing film. That said, this isn't bad. Even though I knew where the film was headed, I was interested throughout. I would suggest giving "Last Summer" a viewing, since that is much better and more original.

Amazing film
Tinsley_Lenord31 January 2014
I have seen The Bling Ring I have seen teen thrillers but all nothing quite like this . I have my new favorite movie . I just felt a connection with these people and they are just a creepy kind of cool and they just find all ways to make everything interesting like that pool scene and shopping scene and well basically every scene and this can explain the Teenage feelings of being tricked into friendships girls making things tricky for teen boys it is exactly what I want these people to know . This film was well made with talent and care . The acting was amazing they were just like the students at my old high school and some from college . Great film

Pretty cool
vickimarie9910 February 2014
A girl meets a few people after moving to a new town and she teaches them about drugs and partying and things and ends up being a lot more messed up than they thought at first.

I thought the movie was pretty cool. I loved the scenery and the music and there were a few times where the girl had me pretty freaked out. I thought the ending was cool too because it didn't like spell out everything or have it all end up nicely with everything solved. Also it has Ned! But he's older and hotter now.

I don't know why people are hating on this so hard. We went with friends and had a good time. Isn't that what movies are all about?

for once an actual GOOD "teen" movie
nonabanana31 January 2014
i am a major fan of the virgin suicides.

imagine the creepy thinking process of the Lisbon girls on drugs with ignorant Malibu students.

i loved the movie definitely watch it. the girl Chloe was scary. she's a psychopath in the hottest way. hands down loved the movie. i

loved the twist on Charles Manson's creepy crawling and marry poppins.

one thing i didn't like was the way Rachel was so randomly introduced.

other than that two thumbs up

recommend it for ages 15- 25

not your typical i hate myself teen movie, for once an actual good teen movie
