Capsule Review: Elektra
nairtejas24 November 2017
Every other character in Shyamaprasad's Elektra is a psychopath. I get that the story of a scheming daughter and her brother trying to investigate the death of their father and thereby seek vengeance is adapted from literary classics, and it's faintly intriguing to see things unfold here. But the problem is in the execution. I could sense few discrepancies in the dubbing, especially for Manisha Koirala who seems too lethargic to be portraying a key role here. All the responsibility is on Nayanthara who manages to keep the audience hooked for some time before the snail-paced, dull narrative puts them to sleep. The writers have created Elektra like a puzzle, which makes it difficult to understand what's happening, and you wait for the cue (a mystical theme song where a lady hums a weird "ah-huh-ah") to understand that we are supposed to conclude something with that sequence. The climax is as mind-boggling as the original texts (of Sophocles, Euripides, etc.) the film is based on. I watched this film because an English literature student form the Netherlands requested me to, but I don't see recommending this to anyone, even if they are a Shyamaprasad fan. Elektra is possibly his weakest film, and I hope he resurrects himself through Hey Jude (2017) that's getting ready for release. TN.
