Hostile Environment
It's a fine series and Richard Holmes is a credible presenter. Filmed on location in the North African desert, he sketches a picture of life among the soldiers in 1942. It was pretty miserable. Two pints of water a day, in weather hot enough to fry an egg on a tank -- as some newsreel footage of German soldiers has shown in other documentaries. The troops recycled the water by peeing into water-cooled machine guns. And flies were everywhere. As Holmes speaks to the camera flies buzz around him. In the superior feature film "Ice Cold in Alex," flies crawl around on the actors. I've always had a question about that. Where do the flies come from? There may not be a sizable piece of carrion for hundreds of miles around.
Anyway, this initial episode introduces us to the main players -- Montgomery and Rommel and takes us up to the first battle of El Alamein, a British advance that stalled despite the superiority of the Allies in hardware and troops. Rommel had a hell of a time with resupply because, though the film doesn't mention it, Britain had broken the Italian naval code and was able to attack supply ships both by air and submarine.
