- A fellow cancer patient intrigues Cathy; Adam's downward spiral continues.
- It's Halloween, the day that Cathy is supposed to begin the clinical trial, about which she is nervously excited and she wants nothing to delay the process. Paul wants to be with her, both literally and figuratively, the former despite the fact he has a major project to complete at work. This pull in two directions leads to Cathy telling Paul to go to work, which leaves Cathy to deal with a young man with who she has a less than in her mind funny first encounter at the oncology center, despite he seeing their initial meeting as a hoot. At work, Paul finds that he has other problems with which to deal besides the project. Meanwhile, Sean is convinced by Andrea that the thumping noise he continually hears above him in the house is the ghost of Marlene, which is freaking him out. And after their sexual encounter, Adam and Emily have a slightly different opinion of their relationship.—Huggo

Cathy tries to find a place to park at the hospital as Paul texts. All of a sudden, a young man appears in front of her car and Cathy hits him. Cathy and Paul both get out and asks if hes ok. He lays on the ground and moans as they freak out. Finally he starts laughing and gets up, unharmed, saying you have to be a really bad driver to hit someone in a parking lot.
At home with music on, Sean hears noises again. He cranks up the music. Andrea comes in, bearing candy from Cathy. He asks her if she hears noises, which arent happening. Andrea thinks its Marlene haunting her. She says he has to have a séance.
He wants her to stay until the noise happens again, but she wants no part of it.
Cathy wears her Brave Bitch shirt for the trial. She enjoys that the nurse is dressed up as a vampire. Paul gets frustrated that his work emails arent going through and complains. Cathy tells him hes stressing her out and tells him to go to work.
Cathy gets taken in back to fill out paperwork and finds herself next to the guy who jumped in front of her car. She looks at all the pages, including liability waiver, emergency contact and is overwhelmed. The guy notices her and doesnt make it easy for her, saying it must be awkward for her. He has earphones in and is shouting and cant hear her. Finally she swears at him to take the earphones out and leave her alone.
He advises her that clinical trials are like the first day of school and cliques are forming and right now no one wants to be friends with the mean blonde lady. She switches seats.

He meets with the HR woman, Cheryl, who tells him hes being let go. He starts swearing at the injustice then claims its because hes had to take time off to help Cathy.

Outside, a dad tries to reassure his young child that theres no reason to be afraid of the house when at that moment Sean runs outside with a flaming doll shouting baby on fire! He throws it to the ground and stomps on the flames to put them out. He offers candy, but gets no takers.
Paul returns to the hospital to find Cathy with her hand bandaged waiting out front. She gets in the car angry, asking why he didnt call. He says that he called the insurance company and they should be faxing the form.
She says she didnt get to start treatment because she couldnt reach him. He angrily snaps that he was busy getting fired. When she asks why he didnt call, he says its because she was supposed to be in the middle of her treatment. You have f----- cancer, Cathy, it pretty much trumps everything, he says.
He apologizes and rants about their bad luck, asking how much more is coming.
The obnoxious jogger stops in front of their car, and jokes that hes making sure they see him. They both flip him the double bird.
At home theyre greeted by Andrea dressed like a giant angel. She listens to their news and offers a Butterfinger.
Sean packs up the few charred items from the room and hears the thump. He asks if its Marlene and if she wants him out. He says he has a lot of people he has to be sane for right now. He mentions that hes breaking one of his rules by talking when no one is around. He begs her to let him be sane.
Sean hears the noise again and follows it to the attic ladder. He pulls it down and is about to climb up when a white owl flies out.
Back at the oncology center the next day, Cathy sits down for her treatment. The irritating jogger is right next to her. He offers her an earbud to listen to as they get their medicine.
