Axelle Carolyn made her feature directorial debut last year with Soulmate, bowing on the festival circuit and getting a welcome reception at its UK premiere at Film4 FrightFest’s October event.
Before the BBFC were willing to give the film a rating for its DVD release this summer, though, they demanded a number of cuts be made, the most notable of which was the opening scene, in which Anna Walton’s leading character, Audrey, attempts to commit suicide.
Fortunately for us, Carolyn has taken to Twitter to share that opening scene, and it just goes to show how bewildering a case this really is.
Back in June, Carolyn revealed that the ratings board had demanded four long cuts be made for the film to get an 18 certificate here in the UK. Soda Pictures had been scheduling the film for release on July 21st, but that ultimately got pushed back to August 11th,...

[Note: This review is of the full Uncut version of Soulmate shown at last years Frightfest Halloween All-Nighter, which is not the version being released on DVD. The BBFC requested cuts to the opening suicide scene due to "imitable technique" and so director Axelle Carolyn excised the entire scene from the home entertainment release - hopefully that scene will be made available online at some point]
Actress Axelle Carolyn first turned her hand to directing with the well-received short The Last Post in 2011, she followed it up with the short The Halloween Kid, which screened as part of the International Short Film Showcase at Film4 Frightfest in August 2012. Soulmate, her feature directorial debut, stars Anna Walton (who previously worked with Carolyn on The Halloween Kid and will be a familiar face in to genre fans, having appeared in Hellboy 2 in 2008 and The Seasoning House in 2012) and sees a woman, Audrey, retreat to a remote country cottage after attempting to commit suicide due to the sudden death of her husband. But once settled in she soon discovers her safe haven is haunted by its previous owner, and this spirit has some startling links to the nearby local community, especially the strange Zellaby family.

Variety reports that Carolyn will direct Soulmate, a haunted tale of a woman secluding herself in a country cottage after attempted suicide. Said cottage is, naturally, occupied by its deceased former resident; something she finds comforting. Anna Walton, best known as Princes Nuala in Hellboy II is starring, while The Descent director Neil Marshall will produce.

Now that she's busily submitting her latest film, The Halloween Kid, to festivals, Axelle Carolyn has put her previous effort, The Last Post (review here), online to share with everyone. Check out this short film produced by Neil Marshall and starring Jean Marsh, which had its world premiere at the 2011 Fantasia Film Festival, right here!
Synopsis:
The Last Post follows Colette (Marsh), an elderly lady in a nursing home, who is visited by a mysterious stranger no one else seems able to see. At once chilling and touching, it is a story of loneliness, old age and regrets, but also of love and hope.
The Last Post was shot in one day in London, UK.

To celebrate this holiday season and wrapping production after a long crowdfunding campaign and a 3 day-shoot this Sunday, writer and director Axelle Carolyn has sent over the very first stills from The Halloween Kid, her short spooky fairytale starring Julian Glover, Anna Walton (Hellboy 2), Dave Legeno (Harry Potter) and 7-year-old Leo Donnelly.
The film is produced by Neil Marshall, James Webber and Ben Robinson, and Carolyn says the film should [hopefully] be ready to hit the festival circuit early 2012. If the reaction to her previous short The Last Post is anything to go by we should be in for something special…...

My dearest friends at Fearnet are now streaming Axelle Carolyn's short horror movie Hooked, for free. Catch it while it lasts!!!!
We recently reviewed Carolyn's first short, The Last Post, and we were really impressed. Her second film is totally comedic where The Last Post was dramatic and romantic - but we like it too. Carolyn is proving to be a real talent; one we're keeping our eyes on.
Quote:
I finished post on my first short film The Last Post in June of this year. It's a very sad, performance-led, emotional ghost story, and I felt like doing something completely different. I was spending a few weeks in La and thought it'd be great to do something there, using some of the great exteriors the area has to offer... I came up with this idea for a simple and goofy twist on the slasher genre and it all...

With a tagline of "There's Always a Bigger Fish", Hooked is available now via FEARnet. The flick stars R.A. Mihailoff along with the lovely Clare Grant. Will Barratt (Hatchet, Frozen) handled director of photography duties, and Joe Bishara (Insidious) doled out the tunes.
"It's a very silly, very brief little twist on the slasher genre," says Carolyn. "We shot it in a few hours on a beach in La just before 4th of July. I just wanted to make something very different from my previous short, The Last Post (review here), which was sad and emotional."

Directed by Axelle Carolyn, The Last Post is an emotional ghost story confidently told across eleven minutes. Opening with shots of an elderly lady, Colette (Jean Marsh), struggling to move about her sparse nursing home room, the film then rarely leaves this one room, the contained story unfolding slowly around this central character.
A wise choice perhaps as it is good to see a short film embracing the constraints of the format and telling a relatively simple story. The story is more of a romantic themed piece than one may expect from the kind of shorts usually seen in FrightFest’s short film showcase and it is a welcome break from the more showy, gory and often a little empty shorts that often dominate horror festival short film line ups.
Early in the film Colette begins to see a ghostly figure, seen first in a blur in the background, but...

Featuring Jean Marsh, Kimberley Nixon and Darren Bransford
11 minutes
Muted colors and slow music give the impression of a somber and dull existence in a retirement home. Unlike other emerging filmmakers of the modern horror school, Carolyn understands how to combine art direction, lighting, camera ambience and all the elements of filmmaking to create a feeling rather than merely a set-up for a scare.
The Last Post is not a horror story about the supernatural. It is ultimately a love story – a very poignant and stirring one, with the elements of the best tales you might find in an old-fashioned anthology of real-life ghost stories. An aging woman is consumed by regret and pain over missed opportunities in her youth as she is stifled by the monotony of retirement home life. The Last Post moves slowly without feeling slow – the minutes are spent with Madame Colette...

FrightFest organisers have today announced the short film programme for August’s festival and actress, journalist/writer and now director (what can’t this woman do?), Axelle Carolyn’s debut short film The Last Post, is one of the chosen few. Says Carolyn of the news:
I’m so happy that the European premiere of The Last Post will take place at FrightFest. It’s a festival I’ve been attending for many years, where I know for a fact that both the organisers and the audience are genuine horror fans and connoisseurs. The film is a genre piece, of course, but perhaps very different from what people might expect… I’m incredibly excited to show my directorial debut to FrightFest… and a little bit terrified, too!
