Actually a pretty good one!

Warning: Spoilers
I really liked this one, for the following reasons:

  • nice twist midway through. They had done it before - the thing with the second perspective, which changes the narrative -, but it took me by surprise, nonetheless.

  • the villain knows, right from the start, about Charlie's lie detector gift, and uses it against her. Almost to perfection, which is very interesting to watch.

I have a knack for intelligent villains.

(he was, until he made a mistake, of course)

  • at the end, he gets away with it - kind of. Which is another nice shake-up to the formula.

  • oh, and: the villains' plans are not as overcomplicated as those of quite a few earlier episodes, which stressed my suspension of disbelief a lot. Still the episode has a pretty cool story.

Episode 107

I won't call this episode one of my favorites, but this was another good one for Poker Face. They kept going back and forth early on about who the bad guy was and then they kept a fun story all the way until the end.

There is also the right balance of comedy thrown in. They always stick to the story and don't get too far off track, but they also find a way to ensure we are laughing throughout.

I don't know how long they'll be able to find these small town storylines to focus on, but we shall see. Right now we can just keep enjoying the ride and this fun take on the weekly crime drama we're getting.

"You want to cut me in on this grease monkey mind meld?"

Warning: Spoilers
Like the episode just before this one, 'Exit Stage Death', the story here keeps you guessing about the characters and their motivations. When you see the tow truck drive out on Kyle Owens' (Tim Blake Nelson) phony breakdown call, you fully expect it was Davis McDowell (Charles Melton) going out on the job. Instead, his Mom (Angel Desai) went while Davis hung back to see Owens tamper with his race car. Turning the tables on his hated rival, Davis lures Owens' daughter Katy (Jasmine Aiyana Garvin) into racing his vehicle with the carburetor still rigged to prevent it from reducing speed. But after she crashes and goes into a coma, Kyle Owens has a come to Jesus moment and admits that he interfered with the car's engine looking to undermine his racing opponent. Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne), with her ability to sniff out when someone is lying, calls 'bulls...' on Davis's explanation that the seat belt that didn't hold for Katy's crash was an accident. The way this story strays from the formula already established in the series is that no one dies in this one, by murder or otherwise, although Katy's crash could have resulted in much worse. Content with her investigation, Charlie's final act was to psych out Davis for his upcoming races, instilling in him a doubt about facing Katy as a future rival that could dethrone him as a racing champion.

Full disclosure: Most of the race car scenes and the interview fight between Davis McDowell and Kyle Owens were filmed on August 2, 2022 at the Orange County Speedway in Middletown, New York. The race track was renamed the Peach Tree Raceway for the episode. I know, because I was there as a background extra hired to portray a blue-collar race car fan. I'm not visible as part of the crowd scenes in the stands viewing the races. The go-kart scenes were filmed in nearby Chester, New York at the Castle Fun Center. I was not involved on that occasion.

The Future of the Sport
Prismark1011 August 2023
It is the seventh episode and Poker Face makes sure it does not become too formulaic.

This story varies it around a bit as Charlie ends up in the world of speedway racing.

Young hotshot Davis Mcdowell and veteran Keith Owens (Tim Blake Nelson) are race track rivals who just push each other a little too far.

Owens has lost the winning touch but has a host of sponsors. After the latest spat, he breaks into Davis's garage and tampers with the car.

Only when Davis's car crashes in the practice lap, Owen realises that it was his daughter who was driving and she is seriously injured.

It looks like a straightforward case for Charlie. She works in the same arcade as Davis's mother. Davis himself is presented as a nice guy, popular with kids but struggling to make ends meet as a racer.

There is a nice switcheroo. A guilt ridden Owens confesses all to the media. While Charlie realises that there is a darker side to Davis.

Owens was planning to retire and his daughter was touted as the next hotshot driver.

It was good to see that the likely villain was not the evil one.

The worst episode so far. Very poor!!!
r-stuprich15 May 2023
In general I like the concept and the main character of the the first season. It started very strong and the characters were good written with good motivation. But episode 7 is the worst episode so far. The writing, the directing and the editing is a mess. The motivation of any character here is very poor. No action of any character makes sense. It is a episode that makes only a check mark on a list, that a special topic is also treated. I am deeply disappointed of the poor executive decisions that this episode is mirroring.

To be fair, episode 6 were also not one of the best, but had more emotional motivated grounds.

I hope episode 6 & 7 are standalone mistakes and the rest will be better like the first few.

Buckle Up!

Warning: Spoilers
An episode about sports car where we can see a guy who just wont accept defeat and will sabotage his opponent car but the other guy will put the daughter's opponent to the car and make it crash. Soon, Charlie take the case and will find out by some illogical reasons, lost talks, deductions. I mean the episode came back to what i dont really like about the show and the way that they count too many times on the lie detector stuff and i dont like this. It feel strange and not really believable and logical. She will find as always the killer and warn him.

This episode was prettty classic in structure and the work arround lights, camera setup, set design was less interesting than usual but still pleasant. We can see also Charlie in skirt and need to say that she was sexy in it but really the only pleasant and original thing in this episode. Pretty classic overall.
