This I think is one of the hardest for me to review along side one shots manga. The problem with reviewing this is that the show is a collection of 5 minute episodes that are pretty much like a music video. Why I decided to review this was partly because almost all 10 of these little mini shorts put together would be a nice hour long movie. The animation is rather good and the music fits the mood well. When we start talking about the story
well that is sort of left to interpretation. No one in the show actually talks. They are all mute characters but what they do and how they act shows a lot about their personality. Since they do not talk, I will be making up names sort of for the characters so you can understand who exactly I am talking about.
We have Eskimo who seems to be a very kind hearted soul who deeply loves a little Indian girl. The story starts out when they are babies and first meet on the moon where Eskimo gives her a star. I consider this to be there imagination taking them places and soon leading them to each other. We skip a few years when they are I want to say adults but in this sort of art style, I'm not fully sure on the age. Eskimo and Indian live together in an igloo (stereotypes abound on that I guess) where they spend their days happy. They have no knowledge that they are being watched by someone who I like to call Foxbeard, the wizard. Foxbeard becomes jealous of their love and does a spell to separate them. When he was about to finish the spell to make it permanent, an owl steals the star that would make the spell last and flies to Eskimo, giving him the star. Eskimo leaves everything behind to go look for Indian, braving all the dangers and elements that stand in his way including the darkness that Foxbeard seems to have control over. Most of this might be me interpreting the show but it's the only way I can think of to explain what the story seems to be. There is only one episode that seems like it might not fit in with the show and that would be episode 2 which I kind of figure might be a dream sequence.
The animation is rather well done in sort of this soft new era art style. The characters are very childish even when they are adults again that might be me thinking they are adults and actually very cute. The show does feels sometimes like its from a picture book or some sort of stage as most stars are hung from strings and there is some odd physics but the whole show is like that so I consider it more of the design. It all just feels like a dream which fits with the soft music that goes with the images. I felt myself getting relaxed from the show as there wasn't any time it felt overpowering. The colors are rather washed out in pastels for the most part or water color painting. Even with that, most things had an amazing amount of detail to them.
The music is almost heavenly. There isn't really a surprise when I say that the music was actually done by the shows name sake, One eskimO. When I say no surprise, I mean that the show just felt like it was made for the music, not the other way around. The voice of the singer was so gentle and soft that sometimes I couldn't tell exactly what he was saying, almost like it was hypnotic that way. I could tell partly what the music was about by the title of the song and of some of the images but other then that, the music sort of blended in with each other. That was the one thing I had trouble with this show, even though the music was rather beautiful and the images were great, the music was basically one tone. It was this one level through all of it and this one rather sad sort of style that they kind of drowned within each other. No song actually stood out to be one of my favorites because they melded into the next song. I would have loved to see a little more variety, like maybe an upbeat song between the really slow sweet songs.
Over all, it was a rather interesting thing to watch and I liked it. It's worth the little time it was to watch. Also a little trivia, the band One eskimO is mostly an animated band. They show themselves as an Eskimo, Monkey, Giraffe, and Penguin even though the people who do the actual music are human and not computer generated. There debut Album was released in 2009 and this show were actually made based on the music from that Album for the most part.
