"The classics, there's a reason we all know them."
hailey_118 January 2013
It's a classic pilot, introducing characters, storyline, setting. And since its a story about fairy tales, it is definitely a little cliché and well, childish, at some points. But that's to be expected.

Aside from those small annoyances it was a fantastic pilot, with a strong flashback-to- fairyland story about Snow White and Prince Charming. The whole timeline of it all, between Storybrooke and Storybook, doesn't exactly make sense yet, and whether its intentional or not, I expect that it will become clearer with each episode.

It's pretty cool how each person in Storybrooke is a fairy tale character and the writing is fantastically set up to emphasize this. Not just Ginnifer Goodwin or Josh Dallas, but upon close inspection, even actors like Tony Amendola or Lee Arenberg are glimpsed in each world.

This is the only episode yet directed by Mark Mylod. The acting is mediocre with some strong and weak points, though the somewhat cliché script could have contributed to the latter. Mark Isham's music is excellent, fitting perfectly with every scene.

Overall, this is strong pilot, one that I think will keep its viewers watching. But I don't think we have yet seen the best of this series. This is a show that will get better and better.

Best Quote: Emma: "Kid, you've got problems." Henry: "Yep, and you're going to fix them."

Was Great!

The pilot of a series is always the most importan episode of a series. It has to be amazing, and introduce us to the whole world where the story is going to unfold, the rules of this world and what is the problem to be solved, which this episode does perfectly. The series is based on what we must already know about the classics and from there it creates the story and the whole problem to be dealt with. One manages to connect with the characters and detest the villain from the first second she appears. Simply incredible, I hope to see a lot more of this in the following episodes.

I'll keep watching

Warning: Spoilers
Intriguing idea. Fortunately, I'm a fan of the Fables GN so I knew who the Blue Fairy was (although not that she was a part-time Vegas showgirl; nice outfit) and the darker side of Rumplestiltskin. I never knew Snow White rocked out a Bride of Frankenstein hairdo or that fairytale-types were so melodramatic, but as it's a pilot I'll let some of that slide.

The story evolved well, taking place simultaneously in their past and our present with various "secret" identities of key characters being shown. So secret in fact, they themselves are unaware of their true nature. Which begs the question, if you aren't aware of what you've lost, how bad a prison are you in, really? The whole idea is that the Evil Queen took revenge on Snow White (and everybody else) by transporting them to our "horrible" world where she reigns as mayor of a small town in Maine and they, her citizens, have no idea of their pasts. Not really an awesome use of time and resources for someone who can bend nature and travel between whole worlds (dimensions/book shelves/whatever), to say nothing of forcing hundreds of others to do the same.

But I'll keep watching. There are story lines I'm curious enough about to see how they play out. Does the Queen remember? I'd think so, but she didn't totally act like it. Who is the Sheriff? What about aging? Henry is ten but everyone else has been the same age since they arrived. How long has this been going on? Was Red Riding Hood always a slut?

Inquiring minds and all that...

Surprisingly delightful!

Warning: Spoilers
I'm a huge fan of fairy tales, so when I saw Once Upon a Time on Hulu, I decided to tune in. What a treat! The show does a great job of introducing our lead characters in an interesting way. I felt invested without feeling bored, and pilots usually make me feel that way.

The show switches between a fairytale world and the real world. We learn that Snow White and Prince Charming have just had their "true loves kiss" and plan to marry, but it doesn't take long for the Evil Queen to throw a wrench in the wedding. She assures them that she's cooking up a plan to make them all unhappy forever.

We then switch to our world, where we meet Emma. She's a kick-ass "bail bonds-person" and she's incredibly independent. She grew up without a family, and she's obviously harboring some resentment about that. However a wrench is thrown in her life when the son she gave up for adoption, Henry, shows up at her apartment and wants her to come back to his town of Story Brooke. Emma grudgingly delivers him back home, learning from Henry that Story Brooke is the home of several fairy tale characters that need help getting back to their world...which he knows by the heavy, leather-bound book he's constantly carrying around with him.

We learn through more fairytale flashbacks that Emma is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. She's delivered through a wardrobe to our world in order to save her, which explains her family issues. Shortly after her wardrobe departure, the Evil Queen steps in and casts and enchantment and seemingly the fairytale world is gone and all of the people in it have been sent to Story Brooke. Some of the fairytale cast are visible within the town, and Henry holds hope that Emma will save the town and his family.

As far as pilots, I was entertained and intrigued. The writing was well done, but the acting was a little stinted at times. It had the perfect combination of fairytale and real world action for me. If you're uninterested in the mystique of fairy tales, don't bother tuning in. However it seems like the plot development for this show is on par, and I will be tuning in to see how the rest of the show develops.

Awesomedj18 May 2018
Once Upon a Time is one of, if not my all-time favorite show. The creators are masters of storytelling & I can say that Once has honestly changed my life. I don't think I will ever hear the words Once Upon a Time & not trigger a memoy from the show. I love it so much & thanks for 7 great seasons

Clichéd? Yes. A strong pilot? Also yes!
After I watched half of the first season's episodes on this show, I decided to watch the first ten episodes starting with this one. Later, to my surprise, it really kept me really hooked to it. While it may not be a perfect episode as there are times where the dialog can be a bit clichéd, not to mention corny, and a bit childish for the most part, this is a really good start to an interesting first season. The storyline is really perfect with a very nice concept (a modern world crossed with a fairy tale world wasn't a bad idea after all), it has some nice back-stories for the characters that are so relatable. The acting is surprisingly good and the script is very smart. Emma Swan and Henry Mills have some solid chemistry together, the side characters are solid too, but the two characters Regina (AKA The Evil Queen) and Mr. Gold (AKA Rumplestiltskin) steal the show and showed off their talent really well. The scenery is fantastic; the special effects are terrific, the music score is beautiful and atmospheric and the costumes are radical. Overall, not nearly perfect, but a good start that kept me hooked. 8/10

Enjoyed OUAT

I liked this series when it began, it was different. But since it was canceled, good luck finding it free: IMB says watch season one for free with IBM, it's a lie.

Are you Emma Swan?
sini-20014 March 2023
Once Upon A time pilot has to be one of my favorite pilots of all time on TV, if not the best. The setting it placed? Iconic. The unique, very original plot? Fantastic. The acting esp from Jennifer Morrison (and all cast)? Phenomenal. I loved the idea of taking our beloved fairy tales and giving them a modern twist. The characters are wonderful, an written so well. Especially Emma Swan. She is one of my all time favorite characters. The whole setting for S1 was amazing and it continud to bloom into brilliant six seasons. OUAT is timeless, beautiful and addicitve - I am going to rewatch it so much. The best show ever made.

Interesting Concept and Story
altijdgamez10 May 2014
The episode is pretty flawed, the fairy tale part is a little cheesy and corny, the acting is good, but they can overact at times, the cut aways are really random and can confuse you, the characters aren't really developed that good, but I'll let that one pass because it's the first episode.

I must say the story is pretty clever and interesting, the acting is good as well and I am pretty hyped to see the other episodes.

I hope that the next episodes will mix the fairy tale part and Storybrooke part better, I'm hyped to see more fairy tale characters, I hope the series will get more serious instead of cheesy and corny and I hope the overacting won't be getting worse.

'Once Upon a Time' begins
TheLittleSongbird11 November 2017
When 'Once Upon a Time' first started it was highly addictive and made the most of a truly great and creative premise. Really loved the idea of turning familiar fairy tales on their heads and putting own interpretations on them and the show early on clearly had clearly had a ball. Watched it without fail every time it came on and it was often a highlight of the week. Which was why it was sad when it ran out of ideas and lost its magic in the later seasons.

"Pilot" starts off the show and is a very good start, establishing the characters and the world well while understandably still having a not quite settled yet feel. The writing and acting did get better later, which again is understandable as "Pilot" is the very start and a lot of shows don't fully settle straight away and have elements that get much stronger later. Mostly neither are not bad at all but occasionally the writing is a touch cheesy and the acting does try too hard or doesn't look entirely comfortable.

However, "Pilot" is a very handsomely mounted episode, with settings and costumes that are both colourful and atmospheric, not too dark or garish and never cookie-cutter. It is photographed beautifully and there were some make-up that suited the characters perfectly and pretty good effects work, at their best fantastical. The music is haunting, ethereal and cleverly used with a memorable main theme.

Much of the writing is humorous and engaging and while the story is very clichéd it does establish the concept and the alternate worlds pretty well. The wedding entrance is a highlight and it was enormous fun spotting and recognising the different fairy-tale/story-book characters.

Not all the acting is great as said, but there are certainly strong performances here. The acting honours going to Lana Parilla and Robert Carlyle, two of the consistent acting highlights of 'Once Upon a Time'.

In summation, a strong start for a frustratingly uneven show. 8/10 Bethany Cox

The First Episode...
taylorkingston15 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. It's a good series premiere and I think it's very intriguing. Although the show was better from Season 2 onwards, this episode marks the first in a list of good first season episodes.

In the real world: Emma Swan's life is turned upside down on her twenty-eighth birthday, when her son Henry, whom she gave up for adopted a decade earlier, tracks her down and convinces her to take him back to his town, Storybrooke, Maine. He tries to convince her that his town is special, because everyone is really a fairytale character, whom his adopted Mother, Regina, or the Evil Queen to Henry, cursed. No one knows who they really are and they're doomed to continue living life this way, unless Emma can break the curse, which is what she's destined to do.

In the fairytale world: Prince Charming wakes up Snow White after her date with the poison apple. At their wedding, the Evil Queen vows that she will destroy their and everyone else's happiness, if it's the last thing she ever does.

Best part of the episode: The Evil Queen's entrance at Snow White and Prince Charming's wedding.

Worst part of the episode: The fact that everyone has been living the same life over and over for twenty-eight years.

Overall, I give this episode a 7 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.
