Tech challenged, here
thejdrage10 July 2022
I drive an older American car that has cruise control that I never use because - YES - I am that much of a control freak. The airplanes I flew did not have autopilot either. So ..... I'm almost afraid to say anything in fear of having a gang of Beta Teslas track me down and terrorize me with their autopilot abilities.

Elon Musk isn't a hero OR zero to me. He's an innovator who is whip smart - and has thousands of people paying to be betas for his product. What scares me is being on the road with them!! But then, I have my hands on the wheel all the time. And I'm serious about having never used the cruise control on my car.

The documentary showed what is possible and what will be commonplace in the near future. And I think it's great - if that's what you want. I am believer in that old cliche "If you believe it, you can achieve it." And Musk is smart enough to hire people who will eventually perfect his vision of the perfect self-driving car.

You also have to admit that he's a brilliant salesman - of all sorts of things.

I'd highly recommend this documentary to see what's been achieved and what perfection will be achieved much sooner than later with Tesla, with Elon Musk's hands on the wheel.

Hit Piece
thefluidic23 May 2022
Standard Liberal propaganda hit piece looking to keep us from advancing with future technology in our day to day lives. Not worth your time to watch as it will make you very frustrated. The directing, editing and the writing are very amateur. This was clearly produced by fossil fuel lobbyists.

There's more nuance than 1 star
Penderworth26 June 2022
There are an amusing amount of 1 star reviews on this. I found it informative and interesting. Anyone who's complaining about this to the point that they only give it 1 out of 10 stars is a clear fanboy of Musk. If they paid attention to the documentary, they'd find lots of clear reasons to be disappointed with Musk and Tesla as a whole when it comes to the Autopilot feature. It's a mess. So many broken promises.

Sure, the doc uses the directorial choices that these types typically do and tries to convince you that the deaths are the main issue, but even just the misleading way that Musk himself talks about the promise of the Autopilot feature is worthy of criticism.

Not Bad
Maxax7778 June 2022
It's not bad - it's fairly well made and it definitely makes some valid points! I disagwith the others that say it's a smear or hit piece against Musk. I like Elon - I think he's pulled of some fantastic things - but let's face it - self-driving cars are more difficult than many thought - including Musk!

Weird smear piece
Vanskelig24 May 2022
This is so obviously a liberal smear piece it's just weird to watch. Stay away.

Calculated, emotive and to be expected at this point. They arent even cherry picking data, but just straight out lying.

If you can put aside drama and politics, its interesting
321choochoo24 May 2022
Unlike most of the reviewers, I'm an early investor and tesla owner. I'm also not R or D. The idea that the NYTimes made an entire documentary in less than a week to attack Elon for stating his upcoming voting preference is completely silly.

The world owes Elon a great deal of gratitude for his contributions across multiple of sectors -- payments, space, and automobiles notably. Tesla has a great product and it's a great company with a bright future. I remain an investor.

But auto-pilot currently tries to kill me daily and if you haven't noticed that, you're probably too busy staring at your phone. It's an early release beta product that Tesla charges thousands of dollars for. The hardware is marketed as being capable of achieving full, level 5 autonomy. No other autonomous vehicle company believes that, and so far Tesla has not remotely shown that it's possible. The level of accuracy and detail required for real-world scenarios is still a ways off.

That's okay. Scrutiny is okay. It should not be a surprise to anyone that there are safety concerns around Tesla's aggressive auto-pilot marketing. There's nothing wrong with acknowledging it, it just takes assessing the situation through a non-ideological lens.

Just awful, slanted hit piece
jastcavvvv21 May 2022
I was looking forward to seeing a perspective other than that from the Elon Musk fanboys. But this is just horrible reporting. Cherry picked data and antidotes that do not represent what I know about Musk and my experience owning a Tesla. Huge negative slant, it's almost like it's a hit piece. Fake people "in the know", a few of which have already been proven to be actors. What happened to the NYT?

The reviews rated 1 or 2 stars are probably written by Tesla owners
andersberner22 January 2023
A well made a well researched documentary on how difficult it is to make a self driving car. Former employees stating that they were up to a pretty difficult task. I do have a lot of admiration for Elon Musk, but his promises on how fast and how safe Teslas auto pilot is, are more than optimistic. Even in early 2023 Full Self Driving is not working at all. When driving in FSD the car feels nervous and unpredictable. It works okay at straight roads when trafic and environment is not to complex. Removing the radar hasn't improved anything. I honestly would feel robbed if I had paid 10.000 USD for the system.

The movie is at lot better than stated by the people stating that the documentary is biased.

I use FSD every day
srlack24 May 2022
I have my second Tesla and I use FSD every day.

This doc in not factual and the reporting is very biased. I will never own another car. The Tesla ownership experience is amazing. The autopilot makes driving very much easier. I have never had a close call or any problems at all in the last 2 years using autopilot and FSD.

andersand-4643924 May 2022
I'm not the biggest Elon musk fan, but this is cringe. Its just sad to watch.

Biased Hit Piece
snick-2979124 May 2022
Just goes over anecdotes without little context and uses only news articles and allegations as it's sources of data. The actual amount of deaths and injury caused by autopilot and car crash data from other companies is public and the crew could have simply looked up the data. The producer herself even admitted she was targeting Elon and was looking for something to write about him. If you do watch this "documentary", please do your own research into the allegations made.

Trash absurd media reporting
davidphilipjohnson24 May 2022
This is obviously a targeted attack and nothing to do with an informative documentary. Surely anyone watching will think the same?

I find it hard to understand why a hit piece like this is even allowed to be released.

Brainless and Untrustworthy
bryanhader24 May 2022
If you like slant pieces that fit your bias, this is for you. If you like to think for yourself and have the brain capacity to do it, then avoid this junk, you will lose brain cells. This would not get passing marks in a middle school class project.

The fact is, Telsa's number one priority is safety. This is why they are the safest cars ever tested by NHTSA. They are less likely to catch fire than ICE vehicles. They are less likely to crash. Occupants are less likely to be injured in the event of a collision.

This "documentary" is aiming to drive people away from the safest technology in a vehicle, which is counterproductive to their claims. They ignore ALL the data and still managed to put this thing out. Color me befuddled.

Man, I could go on and on. Shaking my head for the rest of the week after seeing this. Sad.

It's really a shame the NYT is presenting something this biased and borderline fraudulent
eperkins-6877624 May 2022
This is a biased hit piece and nothing more. This was designed to stoke fear and continue to try to take Elon Musk down. I am glad to see Elon is fighting back and would not be surprised if the makers of this film are sued over it.

What happened to our new organizations? How are they not held accountable ?

I just don't understand some people wasting their time on this!
noryuki-5010324 May 2022
The ones who made this documentary, they could have used their precious time informing general people about inflation, economy, poverty, education, science, money, homelessness, injustices, etc.. but instead they've used all their time, and money on this political hit piece filled with anger, hatred, and envy against Elon Musk. I mean its been 20 years now, we can track Elon's history, life easily on internet and judge for ourselves.

Instead of encouraging young minds of our country to be like Elon Musk, they are demonizing him. Shameful!

Awful Hit Piece
sdgriffiths-6757724 May 2022
The only car crash here is this attempt at a documentary. It's a dumpster fire of lies and ignorance.

I wouldn't bother wasting your time watching it, unless you hate Tesla, hate Elon and enjoy having your opinion confirmed despite evidence and data to the contrary.

The reality is that Tesla have produced the 3 safest cars ever and have reduced accidents, deaths and injuries by more than an order of magnitude, but you'd think the complete opposite if you believe the lies in this film.

Waste of Time. Horrible directing.
dp-1410924 May 2022
I hate Tesla and was excited for this. I thought it would be an unbiased documentary showing the pro's and con's of the Tesla FSD software. It was easy to see that this was super biased, and the interviewees had no idea what it meant to have a BETA version of the software. Obviously an attempt to smear the company which I would usually love but this was so obvious it makes Tesla even more credible. The directing was trash and made it nearly unwatchable. I powered through but was left kinda angry at the fact this showed nothing of substance and that I wasted time which I wont be getting back.

Amateur Hit Piece
prankedcleanup-r24 May 2022
Poor production and writing quality. No accurate statistical analysis to support thesis. Amazing this is has been produced as Tesla is closing in on perfecting autonomous driving technology. Someone is threatened by Tesla's success? Similar tactics were used when Tesla launched the first successful mass produced EV. This was clearly financed by special interests and luddites. It's poor journalism like this is why so many of us no longer trust The NY Times.

What about the lives that FSD has saved - where the FSD has seen a impending crash and stoped the car or manured it to avoid - of course that will never be documented is this one narrative documentary.

Where is the real data.
bpmiears24 May 2022
This is a hit piece with on real data. All they had to do is check out the "Tesla 2021 Impact Report" to get real data on safety. On page 84, is REAL data from Euro NCAP*,ANCAP* (Australasian New Car Assessment Program), IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). All of which compares the Model 3 to be twice as safe as the listed ICE cars.

If I was Tesla I would sue for false reporting.

Not a documentary...
harispatsos24 May 2022
New York Times hasn't been about publishing news (allegedly) for many years now. This "documentary" fails miserably to deliver the truth around autopilot, FSD or Elon Musk's leadership. It would be interesting to see who funded the "documentary". It is simply a hit piece and nothing else. There's 0 value in it and it is absolutely disgusting.

juangalt-5722824 May 2022
Dwells on 3 crashes out of tens of thousands per year in the United States and then criticizes Elon for citing NHTSA safety numbers because it's not apples to apples, because it's not statistically sound. Fraudulent hit piece.

New York Times?
wzgcxzzkcw24 May 2022
This "documentary" could have been useful. Unfortunately, it is completely unreliable and poorly done. The approach was not to provide a deeper understanding of autonomous technology, but rather obviously this was organized to inject unwarranted fear and mischaracterization of Tesla and Elon Musk in particular. Why? I really wish someone would produce a real documentary that covers all aspects of this technology in it's current form, both good and bad, as well as the obvious potential for the future. It is too bad that that the New York Times missed their opportunity to contribute here.

Biased narrative contrary to facts
stctfxy24 May 2022
All the NHTSA data suggests different conclusions. You are much less (~10x) likely to be in an accident with Tesla autopilot on. The self driving technologies have great potential to prevent automobile accidents and save lives. Even if you get in an accident, Teslas are the safest cars ever made. The contributors of this film should have a heavy conscious about their harm to humanity.

This is really bad. They shouldn't be able to just lie like this. It's a prime example of the issues we're facing with disinformation. New York Times and FX should be held accountable and deeply ashamed of themselves.
