Interesting portrayal of rural life in Bangladesh.
speedwaysmoke14 September 2012
I've just moved to Bangladesh for work and thought that one way of learning about the place is to watch some films made here. This is the first one I've seen, chosen almost at random at a local DVD shop. It's set in a rural area at an unspecified time and focuses on a varied set of characters. Montu is a young bachelor and he starts to fall in love with Tuni. She also falls for him but she is already married - to an old man who has two other wives! That's the basic story but the film shows many other characters and situations. There is another woman who also falls for Montu (lucky guy), there's an evil wife-beater, a daughter who doesn't want to get married, and various other characters in the village.

Despite the title (in English, 'Symphony of Agony') it's not all grim. There are funny scenes, songs, and some nice scenery. But there is a fair amount of thwarted love, desperation, and a cholera-outbreak.

The film is very slowly paced. This will be frustrating if you're used to the frenetic pace of most modern films but if you accept that the film wants to tell its story slowly then you'll get a lot more enjoyment from it. The acting is generally fine and the direction is good but the scenes are sometimes stilted. The film is episodic in structure so you can enjoy parts even if others make no sense; it's not always clear what is going on, and why characters are doing what they do.

There's also an interesting framing device, whereby the story of the film is told by a singer who is telling it by song to some village people, and then something curious happens at the end - but I'm not spoiling it!

Recommended.

The Director Hacked my Imagination
mdabusayembd15 May 2012
Before writing this review, I thought- lets read some other reviews. but couldn't find any. Then, again thought, let's write a review by myself. There is a big question, No doubt, it's a master piece, then why did I give 9 rating out of 10? First of all, the movie- Haajar Bosor Dhorey ( Through Thousand Years)- is based on a classic Novel "Haajar Bosor Dhorey". Zaheer Raihan, a great writer, director, was an active worker of the Language Movement of 1952, a freedom fighter, wrote his first Novel. It was the best seller, but after-wards it hadn't gone down from the history, from the mind of all fascinates book lover. It was later, included to the National Curriculum & Textbook Board(NCTB). The novel was "Haajar Bosor Dhorey". I am a die hard books(novel) reader. I don't wanna see something- specially based on a novel- which goes away my thinking, my imagination. We all know, how tough it is to make a novel based Movie. Novel is such a thing which could describe a plot lot easier than a Movie. You imagine the every character , places etc. A writer can easily choose the places, plot..But as for the director, his work is much difficult to implies according to the novel. Though some lacking, the director had done it not perfectly, I would say- The betterly..;-)

The movie represent the very rural life of Bangladesh
zahidhasanhe15 June 2015
Zahir Raihan the genius writer of Bangladesh captured the real rustic life of Bangladesh with his magical hand. He was captured during the liberation war of Bangladesh. This movie represents the novel "Hajar Bachar Dhore". The unchanging scenario of Bangladeshi rural family life.It represents the rural life so vividly, truly that anyone can not but charmed with the movie. The nice love story related to montu and tuni. Mokbul is the very rude character of Real family. He also represents the greedy husband who is supposed to use his wife only for work. Also Abul is the wife torturer. This movie represents the superstition prevails in the very rural life. The movie includes puthi path another tradition of rural life. The movie has some romantic songs literally heart throbbing.

Warning: Spoilers
The story begins years ago with Kashem. He was rich and not lacking of anything except a child. His wife finally requests that he marry again so that he can have children. His wife marries him to a younger woman and then kills herself that night by eating a poisonous flower. This began the tradition of polygamy in this family.

Years pass and that very house where Kashem lived in is now inhabited by the elderly Makbul, his little brother Montu, his cousins and his 3 wives live. His youngest wife Tuni is but a teenager. She is in love with her husband's younger brother Montu and Montu also has feelings for her, but they are bound by their love for Makbul.

Montu is also loved by his neighbor Ambia. Everyone notices and makes fun on Montu and Ambia, which angers Tuni. One day Ambia's entire family is wiped out by a disease. No one goes to bury the bodies for fear of catching the disease. But the kind-hearted Montu defies all to bury the bodies and shows great compassion towards Ambia.

Makbul decides to marry Ambia to Montu so that his family can take over all of Ambia's property. Tuni is against this and devises a plan to stop Montu's marriage to Ambia. She convinces Makbul that he should take Ambia as his 4th wife. Then all of the property would be his saying that every man should have 4 wives. Makbul is convinced.

When Makbul tells his family his plans to marry Ambia, his family is infuriated. His wives begin crying in protest and argue that he is too old to marry again. They refuse to give permission to marry. His cousins also protest. Tuni fuels his fire from behind him. Finally in anger he divorces is first two wives. His cousin throws a rock at his head. He becomes sick from the wound. His older two wives leave to their houses crying, since they do not have any reason to stay. His second wife's brother angrily claims that he will marry his sister to a much wealthier man soon.

Soon Makbul dies leaving Tuni all by herself. She is considered his only widow as he divorced his first two wives before he died. Tuni is consumed with guilt as she feels that all of this happened because of her. When Montu sees her wearing the white sari of a widow, he asks her to marry him as she can't stand to see her in such a state. But she tells him that this is her punishment as she caused this downfall of an entire family.

The story flashes back to years in the future where they show that Montu and Ambia have wed. Then they show Tuni is now an elderly widow living out her life in solitude.

A minor story arc shows Makbul's younger cousin who has beat two wives to death already. He mercilessly beats his third wife and when Montu protests he is told to mind his own business as he has no right to tell anyone how to treat their wife. One day Montu sees her attempting to commit suicide, but then she does not. He is astounded by a human beings willingness to live no matter how hard their life is. One day when Montu returns from a trip he finds out that the third wife has also been beaten to death. At the end when Makbul is telling the family he wants to marry Ambia, the cousin says that since he does not have a wife he will marry Ambia, to which Tuni replies that he would just beat her to death as well.

this is a great masterpiece movie
sajof10 June 2022
This is probably the best movie in Bengali language. Screen play, plot and acting have taken the movie to another level.

The actors / actresses have shown their skills by capturing the real character of the story. You have to sigh after finishing the movie. As if you are really in a village thousands of years ago!

If you sit down to watch a movie, you will be immersed in just a few minutes.

ATM Shamsuzzaman's character in 'Buro Mokbul' seemed to me the most realistic. Moreover, Riaz has done a great job in the role of 'Montu'. And it seems that the hardest working character is 'Tuni'. Perfect actor has also been taken in the role of Abul.

The dialogue and the story have not changed a bit All in all, this is a great masterpiece movie.
