The Varese slips down the ways into the water. Onlookers at the bottom of the frame cheer and wave their hats.

Launching a major ship is always a big deal, and here's a fine example of the genre. Fog and spray from the water rise to offer a little mystery to the straightforward motion of the vessel. Happily, the site on which I looked at a copy of this decided to play the start of Strauss' "Blue Danube" and it accentuates the beauty, if not the excitement of the event. I suppose they might have used some music by Edgard Varese, but he was about sixteen when this ship was launched, and it really wouldn't have fit.
