The film starts with anticipation and promises, and halfway through it looks like the plot is building to something good in the middle somewhere it loses its touch and becomes a repeated freedom struggle movie with few good actors and other bad. After all, it is Sara Ali Khan's movie, it revolves around her character Usha, there are parts when her acting looks real but mostly every other co-actor overshadows her work. The movie gets more predictable over time, so much could have been done with this type of plot but it has been wasted with poor writing. The climax is another expected bore and after completing the movie there is nothing much of a takeaway other than knowing these freedom fighters, who deserved a better movie than this.

Some of the movies can be avoided just by looking at the main leads. If someone like Sara Ali khan, ananya etc are in a movie as main lead, it's strict avoid. The makeup and style of Sara in this movie doesn't suit the time period. It looks more fake. And her acting is just bad. Even a child actor has more expressions than Sara.

Coming to the story it's again the usual story set during British rule. The story is slow and boring. The makers should do more research before doing such movies. Most of it looks like fiction. Need to fill some more of characters and just adding some random text here.

The story itself is bold, intriguing, and offers an important glimpse into history. It's a story that should be told and brought to light.

Unfortunately, the writing and way the story was told fell flat for me. Despite the close-ups, deep glimpses into the character's eyes, and creation of atmosphere, there was only one scene that stands out to me. One were Usha hides under a burka when the police search for her and Kaushik shows her his shaking hands when she reappears. The rest of the movie felt like the same message and image on repeat: stand up for revolution and freedom. After a while, the same scene and message on repeat is just flogging a dead horse.

What I found frustrating was the message, despite coming from the right place, did not shed any new ideas or perspectives on the plight against colonialism. Instead, it amplified stereotypes. It was the stereotyping in the film and the characters that unsettled me the most. John Lyre, the British man hunting down the revolutionaries, is portrayed as ruthless, cold-hearted, and intense to the point that he feels more like a cartoon than a human man bred to view himself as superior (pure) and take pride in his country (points that could have been paralleled and contrasted with Usha's purity and pride in country, but were entirely missed). Usha, on the other hand, is portrayed as self-righteous, ego-centric (her ideas being the purest above all others'), naive about the impact she had on relationships with family and friends, and ruthless in her intensity to revolutionize India.

The most unsetting point was the way the movie glossed over radicalization. The ability to influence and spread one's beliefs (such as through a radio) comes with intense responsibility. Usha never questions once the possible myriad of outcomes that could happen... including igniting a rebellion that may fail/may lead to needless loss of lives and bloodshed. Especially since the film stated (but did not show) that she was a Gandhian.

Overall, I look forward to learning more about Usha and appreciate the movie from bringing her plight to light.

This is a true story of Usha Mehta, who willingly scarified her freedom and went through torture from Briteshers for the sake of radio broadcast Why do you show that a person called "FAHAD" is the one who fought with Usha Mehta, in real there was no such freedom fighter, why do Bollywood always do that and not give the tribute to the one who actually deserves.

Sara Ali did not justified Usha ji very well, very avg acting as if does not get into the character she needs to be Karan Johar is the producer, he better keeps his hands off from patriotist movies.

Was eagerly awaiting Ae Watan Mere Watan, but am terribly disappointed. The lead actor's dialogue delivery is unbearable. Sara Ali Khan needs to go back to acting school. And maybe stay there as a receptionist or marketing executive. After Gaslight & Murder Mubarak, this is a hatrick of poor performances by the actress.

Emraan Hashmi did well.

Its a decent attempt to showcase Usha Mehta's journey as a freedom fighter. Direction and screenplay could have been better.

Is it a congress fuelled propaganda?

Prior to 1947, primarily it was either congress or Azad Hind Fauz who had a national presence in fighting Indian Independence movement. However, congress is mentioned a multiple times, could be an integral part of the story ( it is, as that what forms the core premise of the movie) or could be funded as well.. so no comment here.

A good onetime watch, could have been shorter and more tight with naration.

Not sure what the propaganda of the movie was, ultimate waste of time. Just wanted to show about Usha Mehta and Gandhi, but story is not in sync with reality. May be Rahul Gandhi sponsored the movie. It seems to be election propaganda of congress party. Not recommended even for one time watch. Better watch something else. Sara ali khan has improved her acting skills we can say. But the movie story and direction actually didn't give her the chance to show her skills. Sachin has played the role of her father and makes justice for his role. Over-all not recommended. This could have been made better.

I really love the movie. I did shed a few tears of appreciation. This is the movie which expresses, and presents the genuine struggle for freedom and the spirit of deshbhakti and sacrifice. These qualities are rarely seen in present times and especially when the country is being torn apart on religious grounds, and polarised. It is very heartening to see a Hindu girl, Usha Mehta and her Muslim Colleague, joining hands with Ram Manohar Lohiya to contribute to Mahatma Gandhi's non-violent struggle to free the country. It is a movie, which is a must watch for every Indian.

Surprised , why the own nephew and famous director Ketan Mehta didn't pay the tribute?

After Alia Bhatt , this grand daughter of Pataudi has shown that she can carry the whole film on her shoulder. Struggled sometimes but came back with a vigor . Well supported by Emraan Hashmi aka Ram Manohar Lohia. So good to see Mr. Hashmi playing so many diverse roles. Camerawork, costume and sets of the 40's are upto the mark but what lacks is the spark. The last half an hour doesn't have the drama and pace that a feature film should have. There were much scope to create tension but not been able to built well.

Definitely one time watch to know the relatively less told stories of freedom movement. However, a better craftsman would have chiseled it better.

I don't understand why people are bashing Sara when she acted well in this movie. I feel that she is better than many other "star" actresses in today's Bollywood.

Having said that, this movie needed better direction, background music and narration. At places, I noticed actors just looking at each other with no background music or anything happening at all. The word "Congress" was used in every alternate sentence making us doubt the intentions in an election season. Especially in an era it's difficult to identify propaganda movies. But this movie is certainly not one of them. Perhaps a bit political, but that's okay as long you are giving all the right messages of truth and non-violence.

Nothing much to say except that this had so much more potential.

The director Kannan Iyer has succeeded in presenting very convincing atmosphere in mumbai in the 40s charged with the love for the nation and desire to free it from the clutches of the colonial power.

The movie is also one of the few feminist portrayals of heroism and will inspire a lot of women to participate in nation building. Especially in today's times where our Watan is being divided on religious grounds, this movie provides a ray of hope! It is a must watch for every Indian!

Kannan Iyer definitely credit for bringing to live an unheard tale but the writing needed to be more strong for the viewers to care about Usha Mehta, Some of the supporting characters do stand out like Sparsh Shrivastava a comrade suffering from polio but doesn't let the physical disability come in the way of his Zeal. Emraan Hashmi as Ram Manohar Lohia also does a good job in spite of having a late entry. The atmospherics of Pre independence India has been recreated well. Apart from the inconsistent writing Sara Ali Khan's Shrill performance is another minus. Unfortunately for Sara this film isn't her Raazi.

I don't want to call this as a missed opportunity as nobody should ever miss any opportunity like this in the first place. This is the times where false propaganda is getting sold all over and rarely comes an inspiring riveting tale from our history, based on the real life events of Usha Mehta who along with her friends broadcasted Congress Radio at a time when the transmission was banned. It inspired to reignite the quit India movement. A tale like this must be narrated and definitely not in this way.

Dharmatic aiming for the film to be an OTT release is no excuse to keep everything this basic in the first place. The melodrama is amplified to no effect. The performances and the dialogues including the dialogue delivery somehow didn't raise above an ordinary play, school/college level. I will not call the performances to be bad but the talent involved were simply capable of lot better. For a powerful story like this, there were barely a moment that gave the chills. Using of technology to enhance the communication through underground network while the British struggle to find the source of broadcast was a gold subject and the makers just wasted it.

The main character cannot act. This is her second movie I watched in the last 3-4 weeks and I remember being disappointed about her performance in that movie too.

The language used is modern compared to the historical context. Same for the costumes.

I would say every aspect of this movie is under cooked. The dialogs are poorly written, the change of emotions during dialogs also go through wild swings. I thought there is enough content to make a great movie but fell in the wrong hands.

I would not recommend watching this movie. It just leaves you feeling dissatisfied and angry given the time commitment.

Imran Hashmi perform solidly as Dr. Ram-Manohar Lohia. In todays world of propaganda everyone should see this historic gem which frankly I was not aware and it seems most of the generation does not know USHA Mehta. But the Cinematography, the Pre Independence film look, BGM all to the point.

Do watch . Very good story telling about the freedom struggle in india . This can be a quick freedom struggle refresher for the younger generation in india . The story focuses on a small radio statio that was broadcasting pro india freedom struggle content . This really annoyed the British . The story is all about the efforts to close the radio station down and on the part of freedom fighters to continue broadcasting.

The cast is great , story telling is amazing , fast paced and impactful . There is never a dull moment : movie sets and and costumes are compemenatry of the story line . Direction is on point as well .
