Final Call
bobcobb3012 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe from a storytelling perspective this was not perfect, but I think they wanted to map it out in a way where there was a little bit of drama and chaos and the pieces did not perfectly sync up. That is TV and we will learn more as the show goes on, a simple concept, yet one that so many on IMDB cannot seem to grasp.

It had high stakes in the first episode and we are going to learn more about the backstory as things go on.

I feel like the show will have some hours that are simply not as good as others, but overall I liked it and look forward to seeing how the rest of this all plays out moving down the line.

Final Call
Prismark1025 January 2024
Sam Nelson (Idris Elba) boards the Kingdom Airlines flight from Dubai to Heathrow. He has little by way of luggage and is on his way to save his relationship.

In his first class seat, he has a lot on his mind.

So has the young woman who finds a bullet in the toilet of the aircraft. She mentions it to a passenger who has been constantly kind to her. Only he is one of the hijackers.

The finding of the bullet leads to a change of plans from the hijackers. Sam notices something is not right by some furtive conversations.

Is this Passenger 57, Die Hard or Under Siege?

There is no shortage of silliness in the first episode of Hi/Jack. From the flight captain who easily and inexplicably opens the door to let the hijackers in. To how they managed to get so many guns on board.

You wonder if the tension can be sustained over seven episodes.

With the reveal of Sam's final words in this episode. This can be classed as an implausible but enjoyable guilty pleasure.

[6.9] Theoretical Invention: a cockpit door that scorches anybody...
cjonesas3 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
A nice start of a "millennial" problem and issue, making headlines in this semi-thrilling production with very good charismatic acting by Idris Elba the main "negotiator"; All elements are yummy, even the macho mother of 2 kids, but (besides) the logic and an above-average "realism".

Impossible, is the first word that may come to mind of many. Those things, impossible in 2023! Would you say that, protocol is protocol even if her brain's splashed all over the cockpit door; I learned something else though in the process, screen both the captain and the first officer (every time) for any psychological / emotional issue, any of them could be a loose thread, you could also choose to put a third "mastodonte" in the cockpit to watch the two main birds or for them to watch him!

Trust, what a funny word... You can never be sure of anything, not as long as humans fly a plane, up until sophisticated AI take over and we'll be at last free of any human's nice or crazy interaction in any cockpit in the world.

Theoretical invention: a cockpit door that scorches anybody that tries to open it while in flight and no matter what.

Squawk 7500!
stevenrtaplin3 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Keep watching and the drama unfolds.

It's not a Hollywood-style action flick - it's tense and more true to life than most - (nothing is going to be perfect) - the A330 layout, passengers, cabin crew and scenes look great, ATC is portrayed well enough (mostly correct RT and locations) - and it's good to see a 'different kind' of hijacker - unlike the usual stereotypes!

But, the captain deviates from reality; that said, who knows how anyone would handle in a hijack situation? Although, correct procedure would have ended the entire show on episode one - so we'll forgive them! The captain's mistake leads us down an interesting journey.

Note: going by-the-book procedure: as soon as a 'situation' arises; the cockpit door stays locked and you send a coded message (7500) to ATC. Two interceptor / fighter aircraft will be escorting you pronto! If you sit in the cockpit of any modern commercial a/c you'll find you can set an emergency code even if the hijacker is with you.

The ending of the first episode sets us up nicely.

And....keep watching.......each episode adds interest, detail and suspense.

Absolutely awful.
maxx_12 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Goodness me where do I start.

There's so much going on here which you could tear to shreds if you had the time it's difficult to condense into one review.

So let's start.

Firstly, apple clearly has the budget in this and they've constructed a significant cast with great potential. So why do we see an A320 as the plane at the beginning and not the A330 they very clearly have shown in the episode?

Currently, not going into how people actually have the weapons on board as could be cleared up later.

It then proceeds to show a character find a bullet in the plane toilet. What does she do? Tell a random passenger and not a member of staff!

Rather unsurprisingly the random passenger is in on the whole thing and comes up with a nonsense reason as to how the bullet even ended up there. Astonishingly, 2 of the passengers actually believe it and only 1 has an issue with it. The passenger, who has enough logic to see it's nonsense, decides to call the cabin crew. What does she do? Make it cryptic and take ages to just say they found a bullet!

Anyways so they hijack the plane and take all the cabin crew hostage. The pilots notice and instead of being normal people and following protocol decide to actually radio in there's a major incident on board instead of just squawking the relevant code. The captains relationship with one of the cabin crew is mysteriously known amongst the people hijacking the plane and so they use that to blackmail the captain, threatening to execute the cabin crew member. What does the pilot do? Does he follow protocol and try save the lives of potentially hundreds of people over just one? No! Of course not! He gives in, and under gunpoint comms back into Dubai ATC saying "we're fine now". Do they suspect somethings actually wrong like 95% of people would? No! Of course not!

The hijackers order for wifi to be turned off so no one sends "help us" texts but luckily the main character of the show manages to send one off! Lucky, right? No! He sends a massively cryptic message where instead of saying "help, terrorists hijacked plane, they have guns" he just says "serious incident".

Then to top it all off, despite multiple statements by the hijackers that they won't harm anyone unless prompted, he attempts to bargain with them instead of just staying quiet because we wouldn't have a plot otherwise, would we?

Unbelievably lazy research and writing into this. Nonsensical at best. So, so poor.

Who writes this stuff?
jamosmonk2 July 2023
You have the good actors, you clearly have a decent budget. But this inanity is the script? Who can even suspend disbelief around this tripe? From the unrealistic off plane relationships to the on plane silliness that passes for a plot. If a hijacker would kill one person to get into the cockpit to take control why would you turn over control of all passengers? Why do people clearly being hijacked act vague and say "incident" so that the person they are trying to alert has no realistic idea whats going on. Like if an engine was on fire you'd say "there might be an issue with a part of the plane." It's as if whomever wrote this did NO research and also has no experience with real life human behavior. The only show dumber than this so far is season 2 of "From"

Just...Hope it makes sense later
DRoy20056 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
So all it took was one threat to have the experienced, well trained captain open the door? Great. Now instead of the stewardess dying you all can die and then some, right? He just goes from "We can't open the door" to "I'll open the door" all because the gunman said he knows about the affair. Makes 100000000% sense. Sure they'd kill all passengers but even that loss of life would be small in comparison to what they could do with the plane itself (Do I really need to mention 9/11? Well...I guess I just did.)

I hope the story has a deeper connection relating to the captain as episodes go on but I have a feeling it won't. That scene really killed this for me. Oh well. We'll see what happens I guess.
