The show is a parody about a family of Jehovah Witnesses. While they never actually say it, it is reasonable to infer that the family are Jehovah's Witnesses, because Jehovah's Witnesses believe we are living in the last days before Armageddon and are known for their door-to-door evangelising.

I do not know why so many people have said the acting/performances were bad. I believe the actors did a fine job playing their parts relative to actors in many lifetime and Tubi movies.

The show was good up until the end of episode 5 where it becomes unrealistic.

(1) When you submit any application, you cannot go back to the website and delete an application. Once it is submitted, there is no changing your mind. The mother logging on to the university's application system to delete her application after the deadline has already passed is implausible and not funny.

(2) Men do not get expelled from any order for engaging in sexual relations with women. They require to describe it in detail in front of elders and repent. In a religion in which women are not allowed to pick their husbands nor be elders, a man would not be kicked out, while a woman be permitted to remain in the religion. Premarital sex is prohibited in many religious sects. I do not like it when movies paint this picture that men will be shunned for engaging in premarital sex when sexual abuse is a problem in these religions that subjugate women. JH women's allegations of sexual abuse are judged by elders (all men). JW men who rape JW women never get expelled from the religion, although they should.

Google Macleans "Against their will" for an article about the sexual abuse of a JW woman by her father and later husband in Canada whom she was forced to marry. Her mother dressed her sexually for her potential suiters.

Good idea poorly done. Just not funny. I got almost to the end of episode 5, despite my doubts all the way through. I like to give a show a chance and I was hoping it would improve. Ridiculous cartoon characters throughout. Nobody is realistic at all; just caricatures going through the motions reciting a dreadfully unfunny script written by people who, apparently, haven't a clue about "funny".

Simon Bird, with his moronic bowl haircut, dreadfully overacts, and looks demented. How can anyone take this show seriously? It is preposterous. I know there are a lot of "religious" sects with nonsensical beliefs that prevent them living joyous, fulfilling lives. I suppose a series could be made highlighting their far-fetched ideas with humour and (what is needed) sarcasm, but this isn't it. Let alone did I not laugh, I didn't even smile. I groaned. I rolled my eyes.

I suppose the (SPOILER) scene of mom throwing up in Andrew's treasured memorial to his wife is supposed to elicit howls of laughter. Maybe if you're in pre-school and think vomit is funny, otherwise, no. And that's when I turned it off. No more wasting time with this nonsense; clearly it is NEVER going to get funny as there's only one episode left. I am happy to miss it. I don't know why I'm even giving it three. The only sane character is Rachel's boyfriend. Everyone else is delusional, misguided, gullible and, in the case of the dad, a raging narcissist. Not much to laugh at there!

I absolutely loved this new sitcom. It's written supremely well and really envelops the viewer in the characters' inner lives. Particularly successful is the ensemble dynamic: every character's relationship with each other is clear and mined for comedic potential.

The world of the religious community affords a great opportunity for big comic set pieces, like the baptism in the final episode or the sexual education presentation in the third episode. The gags are sharp and the performances are nuanced: a personal highlight was the moving relationship between Rachel and Joshua when he gets her a birthday cake. Looking forward to S2.
