- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: [at his father's wake] I'm here for mother, and for Susan.
- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: They're all together now.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: Heaven? If such a thing existed, you really think that son of a bitch would be there?
- [Eli starts crying]
- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: Was he that bad, Nucky? Really?
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: You've obviously forgotten key events from our childhood.
- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: I turned out OK. So did you. Whatever he did, he made us the men we are today.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: What's that?
- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: We run this fucking town, Nucky!
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: WE don't run anything, brother. And he can rot in hell.
- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: That's you, boy, in spades. No capacity for forgiveness.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: Grow up, brother, please. And take some responsibility. At long fucking last.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: [to Torrio and Rothstein about Darmody, Luciano, and Capone] The pups have grown fangs, gentlemen.
- Meyer Lansky: [noticing that Rothstein is sniffing the air] What is the matter?
- Arnold Rothstein: Manure... but what can you expect when you conduct your business in a stable?
- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: [coming into the funeral parlor and surprised to see Nucky] Nucky... what are you doin' here?
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: I have just as much right to be here as you do.
- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: I'm surprised is all.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: That it's not me in the box?
- Elias 'Eli' Thompson: [referring to the attempted assassination of Nucky] I had nothing to do with that.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: You had nothing to do with stopping it either.
- Angela Darmody: Why'd you marry me, Jimmy?
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: Because I love you.
- Angela Darmody: Is that what you tell yourself?
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: It's what I just told you.
- Angela Darmody: But it isn't true.
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: I could ask you the same question.
- Angela Darmody: Because we have a child together. It's what society expected from me. Because you kept pushing it.
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: Huh. That's romantic.
- Angela Darmody: It's honest, Jimmy. All I'm asking is the same of you.
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: I haven't lied to you, Angela.
- Angela Darmody: You haven't told me anything. You go out, I don't know where. You come home all hours, sometimes days later, with blood on your clothes. God knows what you're doing.
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: Selling booze. So what?
- Angela Darmody: Did you try to have Nucky Thompson killed?
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: [long pause] Yes. I didn't want to, but I did.
- Angela Darmody: Why would you do such a thing?
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: The plan was for him to go to jail. My father and Eli approached me last fall. Nucky would go away, we would take over.
- Angela Darmody: You used to love him.
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: He's not what he seems, Ange. It's complicated. It wasn't supposed to be like this. Kept drawing lines for myself in the sand, got further and further involved, and then...
- Angela Darmody: You didn't want him killed, yet you went along with it anyway.
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: Yes.
- Angela Darmody: What changed your mind?
- James 'Jimmy' Darmody: My mother.
- [Angela gets up and quietly stubs out her cigarette]
- Angela Darmody: Thank you for talking to me.
- [Angela walks away]
- Esther Randolph: You're like an onion, Mr. Thompson, the more we peel.
- Enoch 'Nucky' Thompson: I prefer to think of myself as an artichoke.
