Toys in the Attic

Warning: Spoilers
Some of the most interesting moments in "Nothing Without You" are early in the film where apparently Jennifer Stidger is using the attic of Congressman Michael Greenwood to spy on Michael and his wife Denise. It was never fully explained what on earth Jennifer was doing in the attic. But she apparently had set up a beachhead that fit perfectly with the manic and creative side of Ms. Stidger.

The central character has been in and out of psychiatric institutions due to her delusional behavior. This experience has given Ms. Stidger a wide array of defense mechanisms and survival skills. Her lock-picking abilities, digital acumen, and Houdini-like prowess in getting out handcuffs, stands in her good stead when she is accused of murdering Congressman Greenwood's wife.

Ms. Stidger witnessed the scene where a male assailant entered the building and murdered Denise Greenwood. She now teams up with her kind therapist, Dr. Charlie Branham, to get to the truth about Michael Greenwood's connection to the nefarious creature Gerry Vasser.

The best scenes in the film were the interactions between Ms. Stidger and Dr. Branham, some of which are apparently the byproduct of Ms. Stidger's lurid imagination. There is some interesting dialogue in which she is performing an analysis of him, based upon his grief after loosing his beloved wife Claudia to suicide. There is a touching moment when the doctor takes off his wedding ring, seeking to move on with his life, based on the counseling of Ms. Stidger.

The taut screenplay is complemented visually with outstanding location filming with nineteenth-century buildings. But it was the interior setting of the attic, in which the quick-thinking Ms. Stidger had drilled a hole to spy on the couple below, that led her to her discovery of the diary that played a key role in eventually saving her life.

Premise is good, but overshadowed by horrible acting. Yikes.

The acting in this movie is so bad. Feels like someone said, read this cue card in a monotone voice in every scene.

Tight psychological thriller.
A tight psychological thriller, Nothing Without You will keep you guessing until the final frame. The film centers on the world of Jennifer Stidger, a woman obsessed with powerful men whose grasp on reality is suspect at best. When a local politician is killed in his home, all the evidence points to Jennifer being the killer. But is she? Everything is not as it appears.

As Jennifer embarks on a quest to clear her name and find the true killer with the aid of her therapist, Nothing Without You really hits its stride. The film is shot in a raw, gritty, hand-held style that fits the story and Jennifer's emotional state. And the editing is top-notch, paced perfectly, the tension building and building towards the film's climactic scenes.

Police from the true-crime TV series The First 48 served as extras and even some cast members in this film, and that contributes to the raw, verite, true-to-life feel.

If you like your Hitchcock, your Memento and psychological thrillers in general, check this flick out!

2/3 Of the Movie done and it's actually not bad.

+1 Star for Being not Bad.....

-1 Star for the Big Revive near the end...that was stupid.....

Okay the end was some extra weirdness. The movie wasn't bad but nothing to really go on and on about..

Kept me guessing from beginning to end. Also sheds light on stereotypes that are placed on those with mental illnesses.

Weak Plot and Marginal Acting
chron12 December 2020
This really is not a watchable movie. The acting is sufficiently subpar to distract from the plot. That could be a good thing, given the plot doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

Making a good film is difficult. This was a nice try.
