With over 40 million copies sold and strong reviews for the most part (especially for the second and third ones), the video game franchise "Tekken" has not surprisingly seen three adaptations since the series began - a late 90's two-part anime series, last year's full-length CG-animated 3D anime feature "Tekken: Blood Vengeance", and Dwight H. Little's 2010 live-action film.
Despite video game series director Katsuhiro Harada dismissing the live-action film, Crystal Sky Pictures CEO Steven Paul says they're forging ahead with a prequel entitled "Tekken: Rise of the Tournament" according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Opening in Japan theatrically in 2010, the film went direct to video in the U.S. through Anchor Bay. Paul however hopes the prequel, which Prachya Pinkaew ("Ong Bak") will direct, will get a domestic theatrical release. No deal is in place as of yet.

The much-maligned fighting franchise, Tekken, makes it’s 3Ds debut with Tekken 3D: Prime Edition – a (very) scaled down version of it’s Playstation 3 big-brother, Tekken 6 – featuring the same character roster and plenty of familiar faces including Yoshimitsu, King and my personal favourite Devil Jin… I say scaled-down, but that only applies to the in-game modes rather than the graphics which are some of the most visually stunning to grace Nintendo’s handheld and makes full use of the 3D which runs at a smooth 60 frames per second.
Sadly compared to it’s handheld forefather, Tekken: Dark Resurrection on the PSP, Tekken 3D is sorely lacking in a number of key areas. For one there’s no story mode, which for someone like myself who enjoys at least a little story with his butt-kicking (if only so that I can hone my skills in story mode before attempting multiplayer modes) is a huge disappointment.

Another week, another Monday. So it’s time for the rundown of DVDs and Blu-rays hitting stores online and offline this week. It’s another packed week, with plenty of movies waiting to take you money, so let us breakdown the new releases and highlight what you should – and shouldn’t – be buying from today, February 6th 2012.
Pick Of The Week
Tyrannosaur (DVD/Blu-ray)
Joseph (Peter Mullan) is an unemployed widower, drinker, and a man crippled by his own volatile temperament and furious anger. Hannah (Olivia Colman) is a Christian worker at a charity shop, a respectable woman who appears wholesome and happy. When the pair are brought together, Hannah appears as Joseph’s potential saviour, someone who can temper his fury and offer him warmth, kindness and acceptance. As their story develops Hannah’s own secrets are revealed – her relationship with husband James (Eddie Marsan) is violent and abusive...

2011 was anything but a year of smooth sailing for Nintendo and the 3Ds.
After a shaky launch in March – plagued by weak games and a high price point – came months of speculation over whether or not the console could survive, but also more alarmingly, if Nintendo themselves could live through the debacle. As stock prices plummeted, many media outlets looked down at the 3Ds with contempt, while weak games trickled out at a depressingly infrequent rate.
Then suddenly, when it all seemed bleak, Mario quite literally saved the day.
It could be argued that Link helped out a little with his 3D remake of Ocarina of Time – as did a significant price cut - but it wasn’t until the debut appearance of Nintendo’s mascot that sales of the 3Ds began to increase. Somehow, the console had miraculously gone from being a doomed handheld that everyone had begun to write-off,...

Having just been released as part of the Tekken Hybrid package on Sony’s Playstation 3, the CG animated movie Tekken: Blood Vengeance, which was produced by Digital Frontier (Resident Evil: Degeneration, Death Note, Appleseed) and directed by Youichi Mouri (opening movies for Tekken 5 and Tekken 6: Bloodline Rebellion), is to also be included on the Nintendo 3Ds release of Tekken 3D Prime Edition, marking the first time a 3D movie has appeared on a videogame cartridge.
Tekken 3D Prime Edition will see the famous King of Iron Fist Tournament fought in 3D for the first time, with the unique functionality of the Nintendo 3Ds delivering a more realistic and dynamic experience. Players will choose from a selection of more than 40 characters and do battle on totally new stages alongside others redesigned especially for Nintendo 3Ds. The game will make the most of the Wi-Fi functionality of the Nintendo 3Ds, and...

Namco Bandai Bundles a feature film, an HD remake of one of their classic fighters, and a demo for its sequel in one package. Sounds like a good deal, right?
The 12 months stretching between this past November and the next represents, I believe, the period with the most Tekken media releases ever. Between the title under discussion today, as well as Street Fighter x Tekken, Tekken 3D Prime Edition, and next year's Tekken Tag Tournament 2, Namco Bandai is apparently intent on giving you as much Panda-on-cyborg-ninja violence as possible. And given that traditionally, this has been my favorite fighting game franchise (the series took some lumps with Tekken 6), you can imagine I'm pretty okay with that.
The release of Tekken Hybrid seemed like one of those things tailor-made for me. A collection featuring the recent CG feature film, Tekken: Blood Vengeance, as well as an HD remake of the franchise's first tag-team game,...

Namco Bandai goes PS3-exclusive with their next entry in the Iron Fist Tournament.
I couldn't help thinking of the 2007 Street Fighter IV announcement trailer while watching this. Like that trailer, this one assumes you're familiar with the characters in the Tekken franchise, and seem to be more interested in creating intrigue than showing off gameplay from the Holiday 2012 release.
In the meantime, there's always the Tekken Hybrid release which collects Tekken Tag Tournament HD, the CG movie Tekken: Blood Vengeance, and relevant to our post here, Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue which allows you to play as Alisa, Xiayou, Jin, and Kazuya for a couple of rounds. The series has gotten a new engine and it seems that, much like Sfiv, Tekken Tournament 2 might be trying to reintroduce their franchise to gamers in a big way.
Tekken Tag Tournament 2 is coming to the PS3 during the 2012 Holiday season.
