Yangon, also known as Rangoon, was the capital city of Myanmar (also known as Burma) until 2006. From the early 1950s until 1971, this city was one of the many stops, depending on the day operated, of Pan Am's round-the-world eastbound service flight '002', which started in New York and ended in San Francisco. The opposite westbound trip was flight '001'. The last round-the-world flight departed Los Angeles on 27 October 1982.
Kai Tak Airport was Hong Kong's international airport from 1925 until 1998. Its famous runway 13 'Checkerboard Turn' (a large "aviation orange" and white pattern on a hill) landing approach was considered spectacular, demanding a low altitude 47° right-hand turn, starting at about 650 ft. (200 m) and ending at 140 ft. (43 m), before the final line up and touchdown. Because of this turn, instrument landing system (ILS) was not available for this runway heading and landings had to follow a visual approach, making the operation unusable in low visibility conditions.
