The first full trailer for Dain Said's Interchange gave me shivers, even though it's quite warm where I live. The supernatural noir is entirely unsettling, at least according to the imagery, sounds, and general atmosphe of the trailer. The film will be making its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in the Vanguard Section. Synopsis: The supernatural thriller follows a forensics photographer and a hardnosed cop as they confront their darkest selves while investigating a macabre murder. Their investigation leads them to the realm of superstitions, shamans and the paranormal. The film masterfully combines elements of the real world with the supernatural. This will mark Said's return to Tiff, after success at the festival in 2011 with his action drama Bunohan: Return...

Malaysian genre auteur Dain Said (Bunohan) returns with his latest effort - the supernaturally tinged crime noir Interchange - and with Cannes just around the corner we've got the first stills from the film to share. And these are some seriously compelling images. We last wrote about the film back in March and here's the synopsis we were provided with then: Forensics photographer Adam is weary of his daily routine of viewing mutilated bodies through his camera. Fearing that he may be a hazard to others due to a recent hallucinatory condition, Adam locks himself in his apartment, finding solace in photographing his neighbours. A series of macabre ritual murders occur in the city and Adam is dragged into just one more investigation by his...

Directed by Boo Junfeng, whose first feature Sandcastle debuted at Cannes Critic Week back in 2010, Apprentice has already been picked up for release in France, Hong Kong, China, Mexico and Turkey, and should secure further distribution...

What other way is there?
It isn’t clear what way is being followed, let alone the availability of alternatives in Bunohan (2012). Adil (Zahiril Adzim) is a fighter who gets in over his head in a Thai kickboxing match and has to be rescued from the fight by his friend Muski (Amerul Affendi). This gets him in trouble with gangsters (I think). These gangsters send Ilham (Faizal Hussein), a ruthless hitman, after Adil to take him down. Meanwhile, Bakar (Pekin Ibrahim) has moved back to Bunohan ostensibly to take care of his ailing father, but actually to close out a property deal concerning the land of his father and the local kickboxing club. Thus, Bakar has to deal with Adil and Ilham, his brothers, using two-bit gangster Jolok (Hushairi Husain). Oh, and then there’s Mek Yah (Tengku Azura Tengku Awang) who is like a water spirit or something.

I can't remember a time I went to the Seattle International Film Festival (Siff) press launch and looked over the list of films and saw so many I was interested in seeing. The claim to fame for over the years is to call it the largest and most-highly attended festival in the United States. This is a fact I've often taken issue with as I don't equate quantity with quality. Granted, there has been a large number of quality features to play the fest over the years, including Golden Space Needle (Best Film) winners such as Kiss of the Spider Woman (1985), My Life as a Dog (1987), Trainspotting (1996), Run Lola Run (1999), Whale Rider (2003) and even recent Best Director winner, Michel Hazanavicius's Oss 117: Nest of Spies in 2006. That said, looking over this year's crop of films I see a lot of films I will be doing my absolute best to see.

If the final product is as brutal as the trailer you’re about to watch, then director Dain Said’s upcoming actioner “Bunohan” could be quite entertaining. There’s certainly not shortage of bloodletting, and the fights look suitably brutal and uncompromising, which is precisely what I’m looking for in a motion picture of this caliber. However, to be perfectly honest, I’ll watch just about any fight flick that you put in front of me, a fact that is both sad and disturbing. Impressive! Here’s a handy synopsis to prepare you for the clip: Bunohan the tragic story of love lost between three estranged brothers and their ailing father. Each man’s unfulfilled struggle for reconciliation and forgiveness leads to the violence of loss, betrayal, corruption and murder. Well it’s about time. A release date has finally be set for Dain Said’s hard-core Malaysian Kickboxing (with family drama, blood and revenge thrown in for good measure) action movie Bunohan. How did we pick up this nugget of good news? Well, it’s plastered across a new poster for the movie, for one thing. Bunohan has been doing the rounds on the international festival circuits for a while now, so fingers crossed we’ll be seeing it locally sooner, rather than later. Synopsis: Bunohan the tragic story of love lost between three estranged brothers and their ailing father. Each man’s unfulfilled struggle for reconciliation and forgiveness leads to the violence of loss, betrayal, corruption and murder. The story opens in a one-horse town in southern Thailand, just across the border from Malaysia. ‘Bunga Lalang’ or Adil (Zahiril Adzim) is in a Tomoi ring fighting for his...

Full disclosure: I thought this was a kickboxing movie. So imagine my surprise when Bunohan (Aka Return to Murder) proved to be nothing of the kind. Set amidst the beautiful Kelantan region of Malaysia, Bunohan is much more concerned with family relations and the ramifications of their actions upon each other and the environment. It's a very quiet, somber movie, only tangentially related to the world of kick boxing, though the opening scenes involve Adil (Zahiril Adzim), a fighter who has fallen into financial hardship. Desperate to climb out of debt, he agrees to a "duel to the death" in a club in Thailand, but is rescued by his friends when it looks like he might lose the fight. They flee across the nearby...

Subtle spirituality and gritty kickboxing are two elements that don’t tend to come together too easily. Perhaps the films of Jean-Claude Van Damme deal with themes deeper than I’d noticed, but on the whole it’s pretty fair to say that the cinematic representations of this sport tend to be a little less than profound. “Bunohan” tosses all of those genre conventions out the window. At times almost delicate, Dain Said’s film balances the gritty realism of Muay Thai fighting with a delicate family drama and its almost mysterious spiritual elements. Adril (Zahril Adzim) is a kickboxer who suddenly finds himself…...

It’s true! It’s less than a day until I board a plane and land in beautiful Austin, Texas! Lots of exclamation points! Okay, enough of that ridiculousness. Let’s get into only the 10 films I can’t wait to see at Fantastic Fest. I could have technically made a quick post saying I want to see every single film, but I thought a list of 10 films in no particular order would be the most democratic way to do so.
Livid – Starting off with one of my most anticipated horror films coming from the minds behind Inside. Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo bring us something that is supposedly more subdued, but we all know they have something up their sleeves to freak us out even more so.
Rabies – An Israeli horror film which I’ve been told is simply amazing, co-directors Navot Pupushado and Aharon Keshales bring us what...

[1] Ghosts, kickboxing, Shakespeare and sibling rivalry are all at the center of Bunohan, a Malaysian film that had its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival over the weekend and have its U.S. premiere at Fantastic Fest later this month. Written and directed by Dain Said, Bunohan (also called Return to Murder) is the story of how three brothers, each with a murderous profession, flee their home country and family only to find themselves back together in the titular small border town where they're forced to deal with their pasts. /Film is excited to premiere a bunch of exclusive stills from the film as well as some bad ass storyboards. Check those out, as well as the trailer and more, after the jump. Here's the trailer for Bunohan. And here are the exclusive images and storyboards from the film. You definitely get the sense of the violence and energy in the film.

Bunohan (Return To Murder) Click here to read the review! "The sophomore effort of Malaysian director Dain Said, Bunohan, plays like King Lear in a murky, jungle landscape, with the narrative focus being transposed to three very estranged brothers. Despite a narrative that seems rife with tragic and violent implications, this surprisingly tame tale has trouble setting a clear tone or managing to bring anything refreshing to the well-tread territory of the ties that bind."...

It’s tempting to refer to Dain Said’s Bunohan as the Malaysian director’s debut film, but Said rides to Toronto on the tailwinds of notoriety stemming from the banning of his proper debut, Dukun. That film dealt with black magic and murder — the latter word being one meaning of his latest film’s title. (“Bunohan” also refers to a local village.) A violent tale involving three estranged brothers, the film is set within the worlds of kickboxing, murder-for-hire, and real estate, and it weaves brutal realism with elements of mythological fantasy. We talked to Said about Malaysian cinema, fight scenes and that first feature.
Filmmaker: Since your first film has quite notoriously been little seen outside of Malaysia, do you consider this film your debut? Or is it a progression, or change of pace, from that previous work?
