An emotional ride
Movie_Reviews1 September 2023
This is simply one of the better Swedish movies that I have seen in a long time. It is an emotional ride both for the viewer and for the main characters and the script is very well done: Very believable. Me being a father of course makes the story all the more emotional.

The main characters are played by excellent actors and I would especially like to mention Fares Fares and Alexej Manvelov who has done a lot of excellent work before.

Swedish movies nowadays are often very hollow and empty and the main motive for them is to showcase as much diversity as possible. This movie also has diversity, in a way, but in this case it makes sense. And the actors are chosen for the simple fact that they are good actors, and nothing else.

A very good and original thriller!
alexanderliljefors1 September 2023
Really put things in perspectives! A very thought provoking, original, unique, interesting and intense thriller. With a realistic and genuine ambiance and atmosphere.

Fares Fares (both as director and as a actor), Alma Pöysti and Alexej Manvelov does a amazing job!

Its a very captivating thriller! It really captures the viewer into the ongoing thrilling crime drama and family drama.

Soundtrack is really good!

One of those few thrillers that actually feels genuine.

Filming is very good!

A very good and original thriller

Wery well made, except it fails sometimes with the writing.

I truly recommend it!

An emotional drama rather than a thriller
lesley_652 September 2023
This movie started out well with a tense and engaging scene in which a troubled young man (Artan) kidnaps his estranged wife (Louise) at work. The background to their estrangement is hinted at in this first scene and gradually revealed throughout the movie. The highlight is a dramatic and very entertaining encounter with Louise's parents in which much is exposed about the family dynamics. Unfortunately the movie doesn't sustain these heights and indeed I was losing interest by the end and feeling frustrated that so little was explained about Artan's back story.

If you're looking for a realistic, emotional family drama that feels like it's being played out in real time you'll probably enjoy this movie. However, if you're looking for a thriller or a psychological drama that keeps you guessing you'll probably be disappointed by the end.

The acting and photography are excellent throughout. Fares Fares is wonderful as the police negotiator with his usual understated, compassionate presence that any fan of the Department Q films will appreciate.

Accountability, is it justified and gender
Kaioh1235 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is about weather or not your actions is justified based on your gender and weather or not you should be held accountable for your actions based on your gender. And as the movie is trying to tell you if you are a woman you should not. I am not a sexist but this movie is just ridiculous. And here they are ALL terrible people except the cop who is not perfect (as no one is), but just alright.

We meet Artan who without any explanation goes to a hospital, punches the receptionist in the face and demands to see his ex- wife for a reason we at this point do not know. He is angry, sad and depressed and clearly out of his mind, so he pulls a gun, and after a hostage situation he kidnaps his ex- wife and drive off with a cop forced to drive the g.a. Car. After 38 minutes things start to unravel and you get a deeper understanding of what has happened between the ex- couple and why he is so distressed. His wife wrongly accused him of being neglectfull and abusive of their child, and for pushing her father who came to kick him out. Turns out the reason she accused him was because she was mad at him for cheating and she wanted revenge so she frames him for her actions even though she was the one who neglected the child and put it in hot water which he tried to save the child from. So he ends up with 3 months in jail. She has some undisclosed mental issues and takes many pills regularly to keep her self steady'er and was clearly in a bad state during this time of their relationship. So Artan neglects her to take care of the child. Clearly a match never ment to be.

Artan is desperate to be with his family so he forces by gun his ex- wife and the cop to stop at her parents house to pick up their 1 y.o. Daughter (the only innocent person in the movie). There we meet her parents, probably the most racist people in Sweden. So, after a tumultuous altercation with her extremely and still 'racist' parents, they pick up their daughter and the kidnaping- convoy moves on.

Artan has now kidnaped his ex- wife and 1 y.o. Daughter and is looking for a way out. They drive along as Artan is looking for a way out and more revelations comes out. The cop also cheated on his ex-wife and has a troubled relationship with his son who blames him for breaking up their family. And Louise (Artans ex- wife) blames her neglect and abuse on her mental state, saying she had a psychosis and that she shouldn't be blamed because no mother intentionally wants to hurt their child and that's supposed to make it okey (not that it matteres for the abused and neglected child).

Eventually things come to an end and Artan is apprehended by the police and Louise is left with the child. And I am left with the impression that there is no real winners in this movie (except Louise who is not prosecuted for neglect and abuse of her own child). We don't see it because the movie ends but Artan is probably and 'rightfully so prosecuted for kidnaping, extortion, threatening and holding people hostage with a gun and violence against a woman (the receptionist), so he fully gets what he deserves. Yet, the real victim and looser of this movie is the 1 y.o. Daughter who is now stuck with her pill addicted and neglectful, abusive and mentally unstable mother and her racist grandparents.

So at the end of the day, this a deeply tragic movie where a little girl falls victim of terrible (meaning both of them) parents acting crazy and trying to justify their cruel and terrible actions. There is only one vicim here and that is the little girl who has to grow up with these terribly terrible people in this sad and tragic story.

A day and a half trapped in a car in with the world's worst-suited parents
liparulos5 September 2023
The movie only seems like it takes a day and a half--it's only an hour and a half but I couldn't make it to the end, anyway. What a horrible premise.

Take the two least-suited people to get married and bring a child into the world, and then add a gun and a car and a whole lot of stupidity, and you've got this . . . Thing.

The protagonist is so far from sympathetic that the story is blown from the first couple of days (by which I really mean minutes). He has the boneheaded stolidity of Lou Reed trying to go straight. He can't be talked to. He is basically a victim of toxic patriarchal masculinity, but he doesn't play that in a way to invite the audience into his predicament. Instead he makes stupid choice after stupid predictably stolid boneheaded choice, what he thinks a man should do. He and his wife holler at each other a lot. As my Mom would say, "she's no prize, either."

The cop driving the car is kind of good--looks like maybe a version of Triton with that beard! He suffers the trials of Job, and I can only hope (because I just couldn't make it to the end) that he survived to take on some other unbearable burden of an assignment. Maybe he'll guard the Ferry Cross the Mersey or Cross the Styx.

Spartacus Super Bowl says, "well, it's kind of an attractive trainwreck."

Not fun
LetsReviewThat265 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I'd anything I d say a day and a half is boring. The premise was not much to go from but it did atleast sound like it could be alright if executed well. It's about this man named Lukas. Goes to a hospital where his ex works and tries to get his daughter back. Who he says she kidnapped. He ends up taking the hospital hostage but let's the others go. The film would've been alright if only set in the hospital but for nearly the while film after it's set in a police car as Lukas wants to get to see his daughter. I'll be honest it felt longer because this part just dragged on. Overall this was not a good film but someone might like it.

If it was made by hollywood, everyone would give it 10/10
arisigner6 September 2023
This movie is a masterpiece. It focuses so much on the story and gives perspective from everyones point of view. It even manages to give some morals to the kidnapper. The acting is great and the actors fit the characters they play really well. The movie was a very emotional one, were you got to see the main peoples troubles in thier own life, which I really enjoy. It gives the movie a more involvment and actually make the movie more senceable. I feel like it is one of those movies were if it was made by hollywood, then it would've been given a 10/10 even if it was the same movie. I think the only reason it's not 10/10 by everyone watching is because it isn't made from a huge and famous business.

Even the best intentions...
MutterCourage2 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Even the best intentions couldn't save this meandering, undramatic and uneven film. With an interesting premise, the poor script and direction makes the end result feel somewhat amateurish and film school like. It's especially remarkable considering the talented director's work as an actor that the acting feels contrived, often overplayed and weak. A cameo from the great Stina Eklund stands out as comedic.

The production itself, from the settings and art director and cinematography, to the sound, musical score etc comes off as low budget.

But the film's main problem remains in its script. It lacks psychological truth. Feeling the author's sincerity, they unfortunately lack the talent to deliver a strong enough script to live up to its premise.

Praise for anti-social behaviour
koskats-5505224 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Praise for anti-social behaviour. A man with a gun who endangered his ex-wife his child, a police health worker, civilians, etc. Was presented as a caring father... I can't understand why a society should show understanding to such behavior.

On the plus side, the film was well made with a tight story and good acting. Even without special effects or stunning scenery it managed to keep you on your toes.

Sweden has been struggling with criminals and terrorists in recent years. Probably being too civil and caring about antisocial people will continue to ruin the everyday lives of normal quiet people.

Very good crime thriller
martinpersson972 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Fares Fares is definitely an icon in Swedish cinema, and comes from a family of rich and very artistic filmography.

This new installment to add to his filmography is definitely in line with his earlier works, and a truly nerve tickling thriller that will leave you ever on the edge of your seat.

The actors all do an incredible job, and are accompined by a great and very suspensful, tightly paced script.

It is very much beautifully put together in terms of both cinematography, cutting and editing - as one would expect from such a great director as Fares.

Overall, very solid thriller that I would highly recommend!

Family issues
kosmasp3 September 2023
No pun intended - obviously a bit more than just issues. Not sure if you read what this is about (I never do before I watch a movie), but this takes it to another level. And you wonder where it is going to go next - again no pun intended.

Fares Fares - I've come to admire him as an actor. He is soft spoken, slow and subtle. And while this movie of course has ... let's call them explosive scenes, it still manages to have some solace. Not often of course - but his character is able to diffuse quite a lot.

And not only is he starring in this, but he also is directing. It's not easy doing both jobs, but he proves he is more than capable. Including some things from personal experience I assume - being called discriminatory against foreigners while being one himself - or at least having parents that aren't native. He may have gotten the Swedish nationality. But this is not about nationalities, but about families and things that can go wrong ... every one has a secret ... still there are things one should never do, right? You may have gotten what I am trying to say here: there is some moral ambiguity ... you might be able to empathize a little bit with the bad guy ... that doesn't make you bad of course.

A simple yet great drama in a confined space
anykeyh10 September 2023
Spoiler, I love slow-paced and confined drama where we take the time to know the story of each character.

This movie is all about issues in a couple culminating to the father kidnapping his ex-wife and his daughter.

All the actors are excellent, the rythme is slow but tense.

Don't expect any crazy turn as this on point with a realistic scenario (I think it's based on a true story). At the same time, it is not boring as the protagonist are going through multiple stage during the movie.

If you are looking to an emotional experience, diving into human life difficulties, this can be a movie you will enjoy.

If you are looking for something less true to reality but more entertaining, please look for something else.

This movie somehow remember me of Locke, which is another great confined drama, which share tons of similitude.

Don't understand the poor reviews on script - this is a true story!
anders-354211 January 2024
This movie is fantastic, the script, the characters, the acting, the realism. We (a Brit and a Dane, if relevant) enjoyed it immensely. There are so many twists and turns where you wonder in amazement at how well the story is told and then remember that this is because it's a true story.

On some of the poor reviews, it sounds that the reviewers who find the story or the characters unrealistic haven't realised that this is actually based on a true story and not a typical Hollywood script where characters have to fit certain stereotypes of either good or bad (never some of both), victim or perpetrator or hero, etc.

Indeed a gem of a movie...!!!
PANDIAN12062118 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
"A Day and a Half" is a Swedish thriller directed(debut) by Fares Fares a well known international star...

With a few characters, but with a lot of underlying conflict that goes beyond the crime.... This film may not impress with its budget or technical poweress, but it explores deep into human conflict, where not everything is as it seems. It cautions against jumping to conclusions and warns that we may not find any conclusion other than pain, as a situation like this will not lead to a happy ending... What stands out is the well-crafted screenplay, which gradually introduces us to the conflict and keeps the tension alive...

Overall a good thriller that plays with its own strength but leaves a strong impact of human values...A must see recommendation for every buffs.
