It’s quite unfortunate that the breathtaking clouds that fume from the depths of Kawah Ijenof, an active volcano just west of Banyuwangi, Indonesia, are in fact literally choking toxic sulfur dioxide gases. Within the stunningly photographed Where Heaven Meets Hell, rookie documentarian Sasha Friedlander centers on this conundrum. Kawah Ijenof is a primary tourist attraction for the region, but it’s also a lucrative source of sulfur – a main ingredient in the production of sugar, rubber, cosmetics, and matches – and thus, the volcano serves as a backbreaking place of employment for the poor and uneducated communities that surround the ridge. The film follows the daily struggles of three diligent independent miners as they fill and carry sulfur-filled wooden baskets, weighing nearly 200 lbs, up and over mountainous terrain for mere quarters on the hour to support their struggling families. The sixth season of World Channel's international documentary series "Global Voices" will feature nine U.S. broadcast premieres of various films funded by the Independent Television Service (Itvs). The 18-week series intends to introduce American audiences to unique global perspectives. "Global Voices" will kick off on June 2 and conclude at the end of September with new docs every Sunday night at 10pm Est. World Channel will also release each doc online at worldchannel.org after it airs. The films will focus on stories in Indonesia, India, El Salvador, Iraq, Tanzania, Japan and Ethiopia. The Ifp and the Film Society of Lincoln Center have announced a collaborative program to take place during this year’s New York Film Festival called Emerging Visions.
According to the press release, Emerging Visions will take place Oct. 3 at Lincoln Center’s Elinor Bunin Munroe Film Center with 25 emerging filmmaking talents attending with a documentary or narrative feature that has been selected from Ifp and the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s talent pool. They will be paired with an established director or producer who will mentor them through the current filmmaking landscape, offering guidance and connections to filmmakers on both their current projects and careers. Each filmmaker will receive mentorship and year round support from both organizations through annual memberships and participation in panels and events.
