So much sophistication yet so dastardly made
y-anurag057 January 2016
This movie starts off with a bang! it immediately captures your attention with some riveting screenplay and writing. As a movie goer in India this movie caught my attention not because of the plot but because it was quickly banned as it came out. So naturally i was intrigued but this movie is nothing but a ridiculous waste of talent, resources and everyone's time. No offense to Raj Amit Kumar the movie was a glorious concept but there is just too much personal passion for the subjects chosen. Achieving an equilibrium between reality and fiction must be the goal when one makes movies using such excellent concepts but the reality is this movie is nothing but a shabby art project done by a passionate yet confused director.

Director Saab don't pay too much heed to this criticism you will do much better as time progresses.

Warning: Spoilers
MINOR SPOILERS

"The film they don't want you to see"; because it's THAT bad. Okay, jokes apart, but this movie proves once and that knowing your way around camera and a good direction can only take you so far.

Okay, I'm not entirely saying that the concept of this movie/the premise is not good. It's worthy enough, but they somehow screwed it up.

Let's talk about some aspects of the movie.

1. Pace. The pace of the movie is wrong in all the places. The points where you want a slow pace for dramatic effect, are rushed and vice versa. Also the scenes cut to the other stories exactly when they shouldn't. At least, that's how I felt.

2. Dialogue/Script. The dialogue is not utter garbage, but it's not good either. And the constant flawed delivery of it makes it worse.

3. Acting. The acting is ridiculous. Especially by the girl who plays the role of Sakhi. She has a constant bland expression on her face the entire time. Her expressionless face ruins it all for you. And it's not just her. None of the actors are any good. The best actors in the movie are sub-par at best.

4. Nudity. The movie doesn't understand the difference between tasteful and much needed nudity, and nudity that's just for show and is utterly useless. The latter one can be observed right from the beginning and it puts the movie off to a REALLY bad start. The former, however, works really well and you'll even be observing it in the most powerful scene of this movie. Right at the end. The first few scenes really felt forced, if anything.

5. Plot. The trailer makes all plots look really good. You get a feeling all of it would connect in the end, or come full circle, or SOMETHING. But does it? Nope. All plots, no matter how major or minor are separate from each other. There is literally no connection between them, which is disappointing to say the least. I wonder what was the point of all those minor plots then, especially of that girl who loses her child. I mean, did they just wanted to portray tragedy for no specific reason, or something? Would've been better if they focused on only the two main plots. Or better yet, made two separate stand- alone movies, each with one.

I MAY BE partial, but the only plot out of them all that works well (enough) according to me, is the one that deals with sexuality issues in India. I mean, even that has its shortcomings, but it's the one that worked the best. It's sort of THE ONLY ONE that made it (almost) worth my time. The other (major) plot, the assassination one, didn't quite interest me. I'll even go as far as saying I didn't care for it AT ALL.

Verdict. 5.5/10

If you're strongly interested in any of the plots, like I was in the LGBT one, you'll like it. If neither of the (two major) plots interest you, skip it; you're not missing much.

Awfully made
Evil_Herbivore26 August 2018
Unfreedom means to tackle pressing issues of the modern society. It seems like it was supposed to be quite an ambitious movie, and when one looks at its description it really seems so. The picture tells two separate stories: one is about a Muslim terrorist who comes to New York City to kill a controversial Muslim scholar, the other is about a Hindu woman, who is supposed to marry a man chosen by her father, but who is actually a lesbian.

What could have been a moving story, very quickly turns out to be increasingly annoying and very poorly made. The storytelling is quite incoherent, taking leaps without any explanation. This robs the characters of emotional depth, as the movie never stops to explore their feelings. Even the most violent and bloody scenes weren't able to move me, as they seem like something out of a cheap exploitation movie and not what I believe was meant to be a moving drama. This blandness of the characters is also reflected in the acting, which in most cases is wooden even when it should be full of emotion. The only exception is Preeti Gupta as Leela, who is terribly overacting instead.

Almost every other aspect of the movie is similarly poor. The camera is often so shaky it may make the viewer dizzy and there is really no need for this here. The editing is super fast, cutting every 10 or 15 seconds, even in the scenes which are meant to be calm. The music is often too apparent, which is quite annoying. At first I found it sad that the movie could have been really good, but turned out very poor, but then I realised that a picture which is so bad in every possible way never had a chance of being good, even if it tackles really important issues.

Annoyingly Terrible
trancenational23 February 2019
The title would do enough but review needs to be five sentences long. One of the worst movies I ever saw. Everything about this movie is bad. And the end??? Sugar on top. You really need to have no taste at all to make something like this.

Very ordinary.

Here it goes... Those who don't watch it, wont miss anything.

The Idea of the movie was good even if nothing fresh, but the movie making was completely lousy. Acting and Direction both lacked polish and it had a typical B-grade movie experience to it. Nude scenes when incorporated were unnecessary / out of context and felt like they were put there just for the sake of it. The screenplay has way too many plot holes and gaffes. People who are gay or lesbian or bi, they do not run around rubbing it in the face of other people to make themselves feel better. Lack of sophistication and finesse to handle sensitive issues often makes the performing characters look stupid. If you want to highlight some of the most prominent issues of our times, at least a sincere effort is expected.

underrated and ovehyped at the same time
ankurmangla-4660815 January 2019
Overhyped because its Banned in india?? censor board-after watching the film, Hindu and Muslims will start fighting and will ignite unnatural passions. Underrated- Its an experimental film & deserves to be around 7.5 star instead of 6.4. We don't choose our sexuality, desire nor we choose our individual views on our own religion. we have to follows the clerics, mullah, pandits. we can't make our analysis of our sexuality or religion by our common sense. Thats unfreedom.

Cornered in life
ferguson-629 May 2015
Greetings again from the darkness. Societal mores are always slow to change, but the slow acceptance of new cultural ideals pales in comparison to the evolution of religious beliefs and traditions, which can take multiple millenniums for even the smallest revisions. First time director Raj Amit Kumar co-wrote the script with Damon J Taylor, and they seem anxious to point out the out-of-step status of Muslims in regards to both pacifism and sexual orientation.

The structure of the film can be a bit tough to follow as a viewer since there are two seemingly unrelated stories, along with the corresponding flashbacks for character perspective. One story follows an angry idealist has he accepts his assignment for terrorism and travels from Pakistan to New York City. Mohammed Husain's (played by Bhanu Uday) mission is to coerce (a word much too nice for his actions) pacifist Muslim scholar Fareed Rahmani (Victor Banjeree) into admitting on video that he is a fraud and not a true Muslim. The other story has Leela Singh (Preeti Gupta) as a frustrated lesbian woman in New Delhi who has refused ten marriages arranged by her devout father (Adil Hussain), and finally runs away to meet her choice of lover … artist Sakhi (Bhavani Lee), whose current boyfriend finds Leela's passion comical – right up until he doesn't.

A running theme for both story lines, as well as the numerous sub-plots, is specifically stated as "It's the choice we make when we are most cornered in life that define us". Solution through violence and torture is consistent through both stories, and as disgusting as the actions of terrorist Husain are, it's the actions of Leela's father that are the most stomach churning and confounding. There are a few shots taken at the power of Wall Street, but the actions of greed don't compare to the more severe and unforgivable actions driven by religious beliefs. The film was originally entitled "Blemished Light", but it's difficult to find illumination in this well-acted film that exposes clouded thought processes.

How this movie was made..
Nand2Tetris1 May 2020
"Let's make a movie and make some money off it. You know what sells? Nudity. Okay great, I know this Indian chick who's okay to be nude, but she doesn't want to do full frontal nudity. Damn. We need a white chick for that. Okay, found one on Craigslist. Now if we are spending half our budget on these ladies, may as well get them to make out. Okay! Done. Lesbian lovers. But what's the plot? There isn't one. Wait. Indian woman obviously has arranged marriage to deal with. So let's introduce that as the main conflict. *Blows raspberries*. Not hard-hitting enough. Let's bring some religion and extremism in the mix. It's sure to get our film banned which means more people will want to watch it. Yass! We got this."

Yes! it is not a movie for a kid but it shows the dark side of our SOCIETY.Where we are restricted with limited amount of choices still called as INDEPENDENT. We are free to do anything say independent to do anything but.....with a limited choices..then how can one say that we are free...we are independent...A must watch movie.People must know the ugly truth of the society. The movie should be rated as an adult movie but shouldn't be banned...

I wish I could give 0 stars.
ravhotbug1 April 2020
It was the most disgusting movie I have ever seen. Nauseating. This movies made my stomach turn. It made no sense, the 2 ugly girls or the ugly terrorist. It must have been thought of by a sick twisted person who might need to see a psychiatrist. I've watched alot of movies on Netflix but this was the absolute worst. I purposely created an account to give a review. This was pointless and violent without a moral. Sadistic. I am almost afraid to watch movies on Netflix, who knows if I might stumble upon another fail like this. You keep watching this horrible movie because you hope the innocent people will triumph. The ugly Indian girl was so obsessed with the other ugly one she actually shot a guy. The crazy terrorist turtures in front of a child. It was absolutely the worst. I hate Netflix. I hope the people associated with this epic tragedy never make more movies, pretending to have a cause but actually it is just an outlet for depravity. Yuck , this was like looking into the mind of someone from criminal minds. The sick depravity.

Patchwork
sainegirl24 December 2018
The director probably thinks this movie is some form of art, probably considers hisself some artistic champ. How sad. The total frame of this movie was terrible. A patchwork of unfinished, unnecessary and overachieving mess.

I found it very annoying.

Thought it might be a refreshing change from Bollywood but it's much the same but with nudity to distinguish it.

We want more movies like this.
DeadMan6616 September 2017
This is something new which I loved to watch. There are three stories running simultaneously. All the stories are great. If you are Indian then maybe you don't like to watch this movie with your family. It contains some nudity which in movie it is called making love.

Just to not to spoil the movie I will not go in depth and will keep it short. Movie is worth watching it shows the Indian society in one of stories. Second it show how a man became terrorist and third is his earlier life(when he was young).

I will give this movie 10 rating because still in India LGBT Same-Sex Marriage is still illegal in India. And this movie is about their rights. They should not be seen as sin in the society. I'm mainly focused on one story.
