Iona Gorrigan, an investigative reporter for a French newspaper, witnesses first hand the assassination of a man she had interviewed for an article about the separatist group ETA, considered a thorn for both Spain and France. Nothing prepares Iona for the dangerous trip she is about to embark. Iona, an attractive woman in her thirties, becomes the focus of the police investigation of the murder, as well as her knowledge of the group's activities.
The police chief, Martial Verdier, sees in Iona, not only an interesting subject, but he feels she knows more than what she is willing to reveal. Following her, Verdier cannot help to feel an interest in the journalist. Iona, in turn, senses the magnetic personality of the chief has an unexpected effect in her, as a woman. It does not surprise these two different personalities will become enmeshed in a passion, neither one thought possible, thus compromising both their respective occupations.
Nicolas Herdt, the director, does an outstanding job in setting this story about politics mixing a politics with a passion that clearly surprises the viewer because, although it comes out of nowhere, he has made it the center of the plot. Verdier starts out using Iona for his own purposes. Iona, in turn, takes advantage of her position to write in depth about the way the police has dealt with the situation. Iona makes a tactical mistake in accusing the separatist band of drug trafficking to achieve their position, no doubt based on confidential and privileged information she extracts from Verdier. At the same time, Verdier plays a powerful hand which puts Iona in jeopardy.
"Amoureuse" serves to present two interesting personalities in the French cinema in ways That surprises the viewer. Julie Gayet, one of the best actresses working today does justice to Iona, the woman who abandons all common sense, even her career, as she falls heads over heels with a man that is using her to gain the upper hand in a war against terrorism in his country. Jean-Hugues Anglade goes against type in playing Verdier, the police inspector who will do everything in his power to get what he wants. The sexual scenes between Ms. Gayet and Mr, Anglade ignite the screen as their passion escalate.
