- Ruth is disturbed when reclusive neighbour Shirley Dunwich tells her that her surly young son Michael is trying to poison her, and, since Ruth has no liking for Michael, who stole her hub caps for his art installation, she believes her, informing Martin. Unfortunately this leads to a siege situation before Martin rectifies matters. Morwenna's eagerness to please does not endear her to Martin, who sacks her for drug-taking though he reinstates her after finding that she is taking her grandfather's Second World war pep pills in order to be efficient. She visits the young man's mother but begins to wonder if the woman may be in the early stages of dementia. She also complains of stomach pains and a test reveals she has a very high level of arsenic in her system. Her wild claims that her son is out to kill her may have some truth to it. Martin investigates with the help of PC Penhale. Bert Large is having problems maintaining his balance but isn't exactly following the doctor's order. Her grandfather William Winchelcy gives her some 'magic pills' to make sure she is on time, and bright as a button at work. Sleepless nights are taking their toll on Martin and Louisa. Tempers are frayed as they try to find ways to comfort their constantly wailing baby. Meanwhile, Aunt Ruth is dealing with an artistic intruder on the farm, Michael Dunwich, who has stolen the hub caps from her car and whose mother, Mrs Dunwich, is having mysterious abdominal and mental problems, and also believes her son is trying to poison her. Can Dr. Ellingham and Constable Penhale solve the mystery?
