Enjoyable but Inconsistent with it's Difficulty
SquigglyCrunch1 October 2016
Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is the sequel to the original Luigi's Mansion and it follows Luigi as the Dark Moon, which keeps all the ghosts in Evershade Valley friendly and non-violent, suddenly goes missing and the ghosts go bonkers. Luigi is then sent to recover the Dark Moon, capturing as many ghosts as he can along the way.

I had a fair bit of fun with this game. The mechanics are simple and yet they offer a level of strategy, especially towards the end of the game as you, Luigi, is often overwhelmed by ghosts to capture.

The story isn't spectacular, but who's expecting that from a Luigi's Mansion game? It's good enough to keep you interested in it, and the characters are fun enough to give you the occasional laugh and be fun to play with or alongside.

My biggest gripe with this game, however, is the difficulty. Sometimes it's incredibly easy, specifically the bosses. They can be so easy that it made me wonder an multiple occasions if that was the entire fight or if there'd be a surprise second part to the boss. Most often, the mission was over. However, sometimes the game is very difficult, to an almost unfair level. During one of the last levels in particular Luigi is almost completely overwhelmed by ghosts, and that strategy from earlier has to come in whether you like it or not. Yes, I was able to complete it, so yes, if an amateur gamer like myself can do it then surely it's not too bad. But I still found that it was just kind of overwhelming and difficult to take into account every ghost on the screen. Sometimes the camera angle would even obscure certain things, and thus you wouldn't be able to react quick enough to something simply because you couldn't see it.

There were a few little things, like the Toads, that I wasn't particularly fond of either. The Toad's AI is pretty terrible. If you walked two feet away from them they stopped moving entirely, having lost you. It's a little frustrating, but it's still just a little thing.

Overall Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is a fun game. It's pretty inconsistent about difficulty, but with the right strategy and some sacrifice it is possible to overcome. Despite the menial little things that made this game harder to fully enjoy, I had a good time with it. In the end I'd still definitely recommend it.

Crazy game, but cool
Aleta_Nook14 May 2013
I got the first Luigi's Mansion game and it was a bit annoying but cool. It really scared me and my worst fear is ghosts but this game was awesome. Then I heard of Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon two years back and I was super excited and impatiently waited for the game to come out and bought it. This game was not as good as the first, in fact, it was even more annoying than the first one. Luigi makes annoying sounds and the ghosts are mischievous as well. The professor, E. Gadd was annoying but a decent and wise character, he gives you good advice and he's there to help you along the way. The game is quite different from the first one, with different antics, different ghosts, difficult puzzles to solve, and different weapons.

This game can be scary at times too... and creepy. It's just the silly sounds they make, how annoying the ghosts are, and Professor E. Gadd's chattiness that irritated me.

Play the first one if you can
chupacaden9 December 2020
I modded my 2DS and the first game that I got was Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. And boy oh boy I'm I glad that I played this one first. I played the first Luigi's Mansion game way back last year when I modded my Wii U (would totally recommend the first game, great play). And Dark Moon is just as good as it's Gamecube predecessor. First off, the gameplay. Its almost completely identical to the first game. The only difference is the don't have a second joystick like you do on the Gamecube where you're able to point and suck. To be honest, I didn't even notice this change until i watched a review pointing it out. The way that it works in Dark Moon that that you're able to point and suck in one direction, but you're able only to move from side-to-side, making little angle adjustments as you move. But other then that, again, just like the first game. You have your flashlight for stunning ghosts, you can thowmp em around, and you suck em in to your Poltergeist 5000. But they added a new feature: The Blacklight. You basically use it to make invisible objects and ghosts visible. It used quite a bit when solving the puzzles in this game actually. Which leads me to an issue... so meny times I was stuck on a room not able to figure out how to get through a door or something. I'd have to look up a guide and it'll say that I missed something invisible way back two rooms ago that I needed for the room that I was on. I get the secret collectibles, but this? I ain't feelin' Nintendo. But it wasn't that big of a thorn in my side to not like this game. Tell you what, I'll right a wrong with a right, yeah? For those of you who don't know, everytime you beat a ghost, it drops money. And after ever level, it sums up all the money you've collected. And when you've collected enough money, you can earn upgrades for your Poltergeist 5000. Its is a much welcomed improvement from the first game, because in the first game, the money you got did really do anything other then a point tally at the very end of the game. A little on the level/building design. Different from the first game, you actually go and explore a bunch of different mansions (in the first game, you only had the one). I thought that this was very nice because it gives you a little more variety from haunted ghost towns in the wild west to a haunted log cabin in the snow. Now on to the story. Continuing off the ending of the first game, Professor E. Gadd has been studying ghosts in his lab. The ghosts are very nice and willing to be studied. But the disaster strikes when King Boo destroys the Dark Moon. By doing so, he's able to make all the nice ghosts hostile. E. Gadd has to retreat to his lab/bunker. What is there to do but abduct Luigi out of his home through his TV? He was literally just minding his own business watching TV xD. He then has to, against his will, collect the Dark Moon fragments to calm the ghosts. Luigi is just the life of this game. Him bumbling around like a buffoon not really knowing what he's doing but doing anyways is what makes this game so good. Nothing really to say about the music, it was ok. But in conclusion, I'd like to say that this is a very good game that I'd totally recommend. Not exactly a spooky, scary game... more like spoopy. You can totally play this game without play the fist one, but I'd recommend you play it first. Overall, 8/10. Will definitely pick up Luigi's Mansion 3 sometime later.

The Best Game On My Life
martim-830008 July 2022
Luigi Mansion 2 (Dark Moon) is in my opinion one of the best dp 3DS games and for me it's the best game I've ever played in my entire life This Game is extremely special to me since I played it for the first time in 2017 and until the year 2022 it continues with the same note and it is one of my favorite games of all time and even with a lot of good game I think neither Super Mario 3D Land surpassed it and it has a score of 94, Luigi Mansion Dark Moon It marked me a lot with those beautiful graphics that still impress me, I really wanted to bring this game on my Youtube channel but unfortunately I couldn't Continuing the graphics is beautiful, the soundtrack is incredibly good to listen to, the missions despite being some are annoying and big but some are very good, the duration is too good and the story is a little strange but good Luigi Mansion takes the highest score of 99 and as one of the best games of all time.

Luigi shines on
anthonybyrne154 May 2013
Story: There isn't really much to say about the story (which I explained above). Luigi's Mansion 2 has a nice story, there are no major plot twists or big shocks in the story. We know who is behind all the chaos that is going on but the characters do not and it is great to see them try and guess when they might get a clue. Overall nice little story.

Characters:

Luigi: Luigi is a great character with a lot of personality and is a true hero. Luigi is nervous, cautious, and scared as he explores each of the game's mansions. Luigi reacts to nearly everything in this game from a small mouse or noise to a door slamming. Reacting to everything adds to Luigi's character, he will scream should a ghost or noise startle him, jump or tremble at the sight of a mouse, jump for joy on completing a mission or become terrified should he peak through the mansion windows or cracks in the wall after seeing what lies on the other side. Luigi will walk cautiously or tip toe around should you choose to walk or scurry along with a nervous look should you choose to run. All this makes Luigi a great character, but what makes him a true hero? Well he is nervous and terrified of everything, there is no one else around to help him as he is all alone, but what does he do? Luigi goes on despite his fears to finish his mission and doesn't let anything stop him, which is what makes Luigi a true hero in this game. And why shouldn't he be? He is the star after all.

E. Gadd: E. Gadd always makes me smile. He is a great character with some great lines. Always cackling away after the things he says and always giving Luigi encouragement throughout the game. There isn't much else to say about E. Gadd as he never leaves his bunker, but he always helps Luigi get to where he needs to be by communicating with him through his latest invention the DS (Duel Scream). Overall I hope E. Gadd shows up a bit more in the Mario franchise.

Ghosts: The ghosts are a great bunch of characters; they all have their own personalities. It's fun to watch them through the mansion windows and see the ghosts messing things up or breaking a window then running away. Whether the ghosts are causing a mess or reading a newspaper they will make you smile. There is even a cute little ghost puppy known as the Poltrapup that is a lot of fun to observe, as well as chase him around.

Toad: There are several Toads in the game, Luigi must save, protect and escort each Toad back to E. Gadd's bunker. The Toads get scared very easily by the ghost, won't go into the water and don't like to be left alone. Despite the Toad missions realistically being escort missions, unlike a lot of games they are not annoying, but fun.

Gameplay: The gameplay is pretty simple. There are no long or awkward button combinations to learn. The controls are simple and have an easy to learn set up, the shoulder buttons being used to suck things up in the vacuum or blow them away, X to interact, A to use the flash light, hold A down to charge it up, Y for the use of the 'Dark-Light' and B to run with the analogue to move. You can also make use of the 3DS gyro controls, though this is completely optional. I got mixed up with my buttons once or twice, however this was during a showdown with some ghosts, so this mistake was really just me. One complaint about the controls is that Luigi will sometimes turn too fast or that your finger may slip off the analogue stick during a running session causing you to be hit. This of course could just be the 3DS in general as it has happened to me with other games. One great aspect of gameplay is that the puzzles in the game don't repeat themselves over and over.

Presentation: A great looking game visually and one of the best-looking games on the 3DS. The game runs very smoothly and the use of 3D really adds some depth to the game. There are some minor glitches in the game like a floating rock, which fell to the ground once I tapped off it, and a Toad that wouldn't respond to me. Both of these have however only occurred once with over 24 hours of gameplay racked up. The only other possible glitch would be standing through a small piece of raised ground, I have only had this occur in one area and it may or may not have been caused by entering the area with the use of 3D, I assume the 3D is not the cause however.

Soundtrack: The soundtrack to Luigi's Mansion 2 is great. Each track sets the mood for what is going on in the game. From the cheerful tune of completing a mission to the darker and gloomier tunes of the mansion you're exploring. This is one game I would play with the sound turned up, the music adds so much to the atmosphere of each mansion. All around a great soundtrack.

Thoughts: Luigi's Mansion 2 is a great game that will make you smile whether you are a new to the series or are continuing on from the first Luigi's Mansion. The game has plenty of replay value especially if you want to complete it 100%. There is plenty to collect, with ten or more gems in each mansion. The multi-player is fun so long as you don't have people quitting for no reason and offers up some new ghosts, challenges and levels of difficulty.
